Has anyone ever thought of riding with a weight belt during training? I was also wondering especially with the pros and teams that can afford to do this, instead of making the bikes as lite as possible why not add some weight to the practice bike? I see it as training with that extra weight would make race day easier on the body since you and the bike would be lighter? The only problem I would see is if you were setting up suspension but you would work around that. Your thoughts?

A weighted vest would whip you into racing shape

I have one for the fire dept physical test. If I was still training at moto, I would definetly practice with one

I run steel wheels and hubs for this very reason.
And a 4lb. lead weight in the seat cushion helps too.

I dont think it would be a very good idea, in theory it sounds like a winner but take into account the bike reacting differently to the added weight and suspension setup would be affected from mildly to drastic depending on the amount of weight plus youre carrying it at a much higher center of gravity than normal so you would have to compensate for that in riding. I know firsthand, after dropping 50lbs since last year I have noticed a big difference in the way my bike works and had to make yardsale changes to get things within a tolerable range. Now I know youre not talking 50lbs but even 10lbs can have an effect on a lot of things

Good idea in theory, but the pace the top guys ride is insane. One scenario I can think of off the top of my head is that adding weight would increase traction, then on race day that traction isn't there and they would wash the front end or get on the throttle too hard and cross up. I think the testicles of the top guys is enough extra weight for them to be carrying around. No need to add more.

I think it would add stress to your joints, and cause more injuries. Why not just ride longer motos?

Weight vest? I could see a compressed spine coming out of that one...

I ride with a weight vest under my skin, keeps you warm at winter too. But you have to eat a lot of burgers and drink lots of beer to keep the weight up.

Imagine my disappointment when I opened this thread and found nobody using weights like me.

It would be terribly hard on your body unless you were already in good shape, and even then, would just be counter intuitive to the whole process of getting into better riding shape and becoming more comfortable and aware of what your bike is going to do. 10 lbs will make a difference, even if you can't feel it at first.

I'd rather just ride more and for longer with a little less intensity.

Just like James Sr says, ride as much as you can so you stay crispy on the bike. Cool

I know that a few of the pro offroad guys use weighted wrist bands.always wondered what that would feel like.

I guess the feel of the bike would change drastically compared to the race bike.

Motocross one of the most physically demanding sports on the planet need no damn weights. 240 lbs of bike and 20lbs of gear is quite enough.

For cycling, a great idea
Running, not, bad for the knees
Riding, not unless if it is organized and riding a lot (i.e. 1 day raw speed, 1 day stamina). Important comment: never put weight on legs, it can make much more serious injuries.

Just try and see how it goes. If you get a good workout with no pain then do it.

I'm sorry, but this has got to be the dumbest idea I've ever heard in my entire life. How about wearing ankle weights too? You could get a great burn when sticking your foot out in corners and when doing heel clickers over the big table at the vet track.

Here's a clue, if you don't see the top pros doing it, it's not a good idea. I honestly can't believe someone is trying to think of ways to make riding "harder". Makes me laugh though so thanks for the good laugh.

You guys sound like a bunch of Nancy's. try it man, try it on a corner track, or desert first. I personally think it would help you out if your trying to get into better riding shape.
