Not sure if this has been asked before.
This question is for racers who haven't been assigned a number by a race organization or club.

What made you choose the number you run?

Lucky number?
Favorite rider?
Already on the bike when you bought it?

Started out as #7 because I was always #7 in sports growing up and the bike had #770 on it. Just peeled off the first 7 and 0. Then went to 26, then 726 because it's my birthday. July 26.

33, met JG33 when I was 6-7 and his was the coolest guy in the pits to me. Then even since the number has followed me(got it randomly assigned for a 5k, has been welded on things bought off Craigslist, etc). I don't see it going away anytime soon.

33 as well. However, it was from racing go carts as a kid. There was 2 fast guys that were number 33 and I had to have it. Ive ran that number on everything that I have raced. Even RC cars. 43 years old now.

When I started racing we were told to use the last 3 digits of our AMA membership card. Mine was 065 so I took 65 and used it ever since. I don't race anymore but if I ever get back I will 100% use 65 again.

Where i raced you didn't get a number assigned by the organisation you just signed up and said which number you raced. The only rule was that there couldn't be multiples of the same number, so in the rare occasion someone showed up with your number you just ducktaped a random number before or after your number lol.

That said i've ran 68 for the bigger part of my life. My dad put that number on my bike (50cc) when i started riding and i sticked with it for like the next 15 years of racing. ('68 is his birth year) Then during my last few years of racing i switched to the number 752 out of respect and memory of a dear friend of me who i've lost, he didn't race himself but we allways played motocross games online together (motocross madness 2 / Mx vs Atv Unleashed mainly) and he allways used that number.

I had other numbers in the 70' and 80's, but I raced with #125 in 1990.. So did Jeremy Mcgrath... I rode a KX125.. So did Jeremy Mcgrath.
That's right about the time I started the "Hanging from J-Mc's nut sack" racing team.

Shop i rode out of in 75 had a old stock sale and i got a stack of 1s 2s 3s and 5s. ,ran 152,251,ended with 351.

Back then you requested a number when getting a pro/am card with a backup, then the AMA would send your card and mechanics pass with numbers on them.

When you put a 1 in a three digit number it shortens it up a bit to fit better on plates.

144 assigned as AMA membership no. (Last 3). Plus it's a gross. 12 squared. Those digits add up to 3. Square it and you get 9, which is what 1+4+4 adds up to. Win win win.

62...I always liked the #6 when I was younger, but I was also a huge MC fan. When he switched to #2 in 2002, I wanted to be #2. Then I decided to combine them a year after that, and I've been #62 ever since.

My first two races, I was too cheap to buy real numbers, so at the race last minute, I used duct tape to make 71. I chose 71 because 7 and 1 are the easiest numbers to make with tape. I didn't go with 17 because I didn't want to be a copy cat of any pro, and I think Reynard was running it.

My 5yr old has his number all lined up for the pw. #25. We were at Unadilla this year and for anyone there, it was hot. We were in the pits watching the KTM bikes get sprayed off after practice. The #25 and #15. The crew guy spraying down Musquins bike asked my son if he was waiting to get sprayed. My son responded and we got some mist. After the races, that was all my son was talking about.

Fits our family of numbers. I'm 27 because of my uncle. 26 was my brother. 21 is my cousin who made his debut at Unadilla this year. So I'd say 25 is perfect.

I was always a fan of K-Dub. So I have always ran whatever class number and 14 afterwards. such as 714 and 614 for C-class hare scrambles.

Used to be 101 growing up racing BMX. At 10 years old, the first time I ever had to create a number plate, we were camping off of Route 101 and liked the number so I went with it. Still love it, and have always happened to be fans of any pro who happened to run that number.

A short time after my mom passed away, I was joining a new race series and #101 was already taken, so I decided to go with her birthday, 524 = May 24th.

I love the 101 number and it keeps me feeling young by reminding me of my childhood, but my mom was a huge part of giving me the freedom at a young age to do the things I wanted to do and travel the US racing. Now I can't go back and I feel like it's a way of bringing her along with me on my adventures and keeping her as guardian over me.

My first race was offroad 200 amatuer. Class began with a 4, my radio call sign was 417 so I ran it. I got bumped up to intermediate which began with a 0, so I ran 017 for several years. For the past 16 years, I just ran the 17. I am and will always be a big Reynard fan. My daughter started racing and loved James Stewart so she was 7. When my son started racing, it only made sense 7, 17, 27 for him.

Started with 85, the year I would graduate. The next year I switched to 17, that's how old I was. Too many guys ran 17 and I always had to tape on an X so I just changed my number to 17X. Ran that for several years until I got my pro liscense and they assigned me 254. That number shows up in everyday life for me it seems so I just stuck with it all these years.
I never ran the last three of my AMA number because Mad Mike Jones already ran 396 and I wasn't about to argue with him about it.

Blush

I'm still too cheap!! Grinning

This is me at a Regional just this weekend - yep - red duct tape!!

I have always loved the #17, and I have had a 7 in every single number I have ever run in the past 15 years.
I was #717 the longest, but this year I had to take #701 in the series I raced in.
