KTM knew they had both classes and paid Herlings very well to stay down.

Herlings had a startcrash in Spain, the crash in the qualifying race in Argentina followed by a freak bike issue and the same chain DNF in Switzerland. So to call him 'lucky' is kind off misplaced. All ifs and btts. The others tho should be worried. I agree he has made a huge step in the winter.

I have never seen Herlings get gapped that easily in a sand race, ever. Especially when healthy. And I have seen him growing through the ranks since his 85cc days

I agree on the Coenen part with you. Butt…. Herlings knows how to play and handle Febvre in the sand races without pushing to much. He has been playing that game for a couple off years with all the Dutch Masters, KTM or Honda. When he wants to click another gear in the Sand he still can. History says enough also with Spain and Heerde in the mirror. Will it be enough to beat Coenen tomorrow? We will see and also depends how much Coenen spend on Energy today…

To be fair, you don't have to be a Herlings fanboy to understand that he has been the most exceptional sand rider of his generation, possibly ever. Getting beat aged 31 to a 19 year old on this occasion does nothing to change that.

Herlings was coming off an injury.

There is no comparison. One is a multi-time world champion and the other took 47 years to win a regional SX title.

In his prime, when healthy, you have a atrong argument Herlings is the fastest motocross rider ever. Ever. Not smooth deceptive speed like Jett. Brutal, insane, manhandling a 450 like a pit bike, warp SPEED. I dont think you can ever categorize him as overrated, based on that alone. Arent him and Kenny still the two youngest GP winners ever? Crazy how both their careers got devastated by injuries
