To bring it back to the original topic a bit, I think Steve had him on because 1) it's the biggest story of the year thus far in MX/SX, and 2) Mirtl asked. I think Steve came across as exactly like he said, a friend, which is right in character for Steve. I don't see what issue people have with Steve's handling of this. He said Mirtl texted and asked to be on the show, it's a huge news topic, Steve was very open about the fact that Mirtl's his friend, and then Mirtl's demeanor didn't really allow him to dig much deeper. Once Mirtl was off the phone Steve said the facts so far don't look good, but Mirtl's innocent until proven otherwise. Seems to me that's about all you can do.
