Kidd Added a reply to Would SX exist these days without Monster Trucks?

2/20/2025 2:57pm
When I was doing AX I did not want a monster truck or sx anywhere nearby. Our commercials would interfer with each other, dates got confusing, I would even request no motorsports event in the same building within 60 days before or after. I did not mind pairing up with a rodeo before or after the event to share dirt...

Yes we always had a year end banquet, most of the time with an expense paid ski trip. We paid room, riders paid lift tickets. Not sure why we paid for so many rooms, I think nearly everyone ended up in only a couple rooms!!

Mike, I attended many back in the day, a fascinating time it was. Also, not only was the money good, didn’t you sometimes add in ski vacations for the top dogs, too (?) Still friends to the day with a lot of the players, thanks for what you did and sparking these memories. Cheers and best of health, sir.

Not many people understand how AX worked back when Hawthorne, Antunez, Stephenson, Bradshaw, Bogard, Demuth, Buehl, Gaddis and on were winning mulitple races and championships. These guys raced over 60 main events (2 classes fri and sat night) from Nov-Feb plus Dash For Cash...plus several guys would do the Jump Off Contest for extra cash. We spread the money around...

Back when Mike Kidd was the man behind the AX series and standing room only crowds the riders were really well paid, just the dash for cash when they went around collecting cash from the crowd it made for a awesome show. Mike Kidd did it right. 😎

Raced your track at Boyd in 87, Cow Palace a couple ot times in the mid 80's ... thank you for your dedication to our sport. And congratulations to Triumph!!

I was deep in AX when Hawthorne and Antunez won their 5 Championships and witnessed how difficult it was to win week in and week out. The riders also had to deal with the track crew, because if a rider dominated Friday we would go to work changing the track in a few places to throw off the fastest rider...

Dave Prater and crew give a shit, they love this sport too. Feld Ent. may be on the paycheck but the races are run by Supercross people. Yer whole spiel is fairy dust speculation. Carry on.

Nov 21, 1971 50 years ago Joe Joiner and I traveled to California to test out desert racing and visit with friends, I am going to share my Barstow to Vegas Race experience. Racing around Texas in the 60’s and early 70’s in dirt track, enduros, cross county, trials and motocross I had never even thought about desert racing until...

Mike's companion write-up is hysterical, too. Look it up on his Facebook wall. Or maybe I can copy-paste it here. Here's his first installment ....50 years ago today, on a Wednesday morning, Mike Kidd and i headed to California to ride our very first desert race in the Mojave...we spent the previous 2 days getting our bikes ready, all our gear together and loading his Dodge van for the trip... We were going out to ride the famous 180 mile 'Barstow to Vegas' desert classic that ran annually the Saturday after Thanksgiving...my cousin Linda Kirk advised us to come a...

Great story, riding 500 miles in the Desert is no joke, riding or racing. Anytime you get 300+ guys and 6-8 close friends together--there's always a race! Smile Wrote this story on my first LA-to Barstow to Vegas 16 years ago. It was my first Dual Sport event on a XR400 and haven't looked back. Did three more on my KTM520 which was much much better. D-37 puts on this event every Thanksgiving. 👍 https://www.vitalmx.com/forums/Hall-of-Fame,25/LA-to-Barstow-to-VEGAS-o…

What an awesome post! Thanks for sharing. Sounds like a hell of a day! Hahaha. Raced it in ‘89. 160 miles was a long way through the desert! Still have and cherish my finisher pin to this day.
