Reedy was always my guy to root for. Loved him on Yamahas but the 4 stroke frame wasn’t ironed out until 08. The 03-04 steel frame yz250 was badass but the alumni but the aluminum 05 was junk. He looked great on the Suzuki and was able to cut down in corners. RacerX has an awesome video of Reed, RC, Dungey and Izzy is really good. Reed on the 250 smoker was a thing of beauty. If you squinted a little bit, it reminded me of another guy that stacked up a few titles on that bike

I believe 2004 Reed in Supercross would’ve won the title over Carmichael, and I also believe that version of Chad on that steel frame yz250 could’ve kept up with Stewart as well. He was straight-up fast as hell on that bike. Only reason he lost the title in 2003 was a bunch of mistakes early in the season. Carmichael admitted he had nightmares about Chad at the end of that season.

Many may not agree, but this is my perspective on Reed’s best years: Reedy was so close so often. He was 17 points off having 7 premier class titles instead of 3. 17 points over 4 championships, think about that for a moment….. even if you ignore the handicap of coming in as an outsider (which many ignore or discount) that’s impressive, but not as exponentially great as he could have been. *Early Yami days- they wasted his talent in 2002. If US Yamaha had put him straight into the big boy class, as he deserved, he wins 2003 SX...

03-04 steel frame yz250 2009 RMZ450 2011 CRF450R In that order, Chad on the RMZ450 in 09 looked amazing, way better than anytime on a Yamaha four stroke and I feel like 2011 was just a continuation of that form. When I watch races from 03-04 I’m shocked at how fast and modern his riding style is.

His sx form in 2011 and 2012 before his Dallas crash was better than ‘09 and his Suzuki year imo. 2011 MX was definitely him at his best outdoors.

If the sport never went to four strokes, Reed would have won more titles…him on a YZ250 two stroke was a thing of beauty!

Not every title talk is comparing the greats of the sport. If you’re comparing RC and RV sure fuck your regional title. When talking about the current 450SX class, you aren’t in the top 10 without ever winning a regional SX title. So yea if Deegan wants a successful 450SX career the proof usually begins in the 250 class.

Matthes has gotten shit from JT when he has brought up the fact that Deegans SX results aren't actually that amazing and that there is a massive difference in his SX and MX capabilities. I think he has been right all along, Deegan has a lot of work ahead of him on an SX track. Which is to be expected, he is young. But i think he/his team should pause any talk about 450 and challenging Jett & Co like they did in the pre-season and focus on what is important right now.
