I´m from the MC/Fro era so I have to pick whoever raced with the biggest hangover

Everyone of mentioned riders where or are "the right stuff" no doubt. But it's a diffrense between tough and tough? I personal saw Håkan Carlqvist taking a swing on a marshall, and totally knocked him on a GP long time ago. (first time i saw Magoo on KTM and become instantly a fan of him) Håkans problem? He wanted to enter the paddock wrong direction.....No one ever dared to touch him or even say anything that could upset him. No one. He was the real Dr jekyll and Mr Hyde. He even throw out s whole TV-crew once w reporter, cameraman,etc and i mean throwing them like a wild west movie out of a saloon-type. The japanese Yama technicexperts didn't dare to enter his tent once. Håkan was helpful and really friendly outside racetrack but he would have used Hurricane as a tothpick probably. =)=)

Comes back just as good if not better.

Same track destroys both arms so badly he has to have a fan remove his goggles.

Shows up at Southwick in a pick up with a bike in the back and holeshots against the factories.

Supermoto..crashes out and is told he will never walk again let alone ride.....
Well he is riding bikes and racing sno-cross and had been able to walk with assistance but still works towards walking again on his own.

That my friends is the definition of tough.
Glad I read your post instead of trying to say the same thing, but maybe not as well.

Wasn't aware that Henry's recovery has progressed to the point where he is able to walk with assistance.

Good to hear.

I guess another good indication of how tough he is would be that through all this, plus everything else the Henry's have endured in recent years, they have remained some of the classiest, down to earth people that the sport has ever had.

I really do wish somebody would make a movie about them.

When was the last time anyone was hungover from weed? Lechien never rode hungover. He was flawless when he rode.

Now thats a tough guy, wild wild west styleSmile I would say most MXrs are pretty tough in general as a group however the ones that get hurt then fall to the ground wincing in pain or throw the bike down in the middle of a race to "prove" they are hurt etc. is not a real tough guy..of course those kinds of guys can be tough also but you never really know for sure because of the big act they throw down from time to time.

I have seen lots of tough guys in the past that you never even know they are hurt till the gloves come off and the guys hand is smashed or his boot comes off, it's filled with blood and a bone is sticking out of his skin and yet managed to finish a moto! The kind of "act" this kind of guy puts on is to act like its nothing and has to be dragged to the hospital.

A lot of tough guys have been named here but the one that sticks out the most in modern times is Doug Henry

Just because you crash all the time doesn't make you tough. Especially more than Hannah, ryno, henry, and some of the other names mentioned.

You know what,

What kind of toughness are you talking about??

are you talking more or so along the lines of crashing, and riding injured?

or coming back from difficult injuries?.....Because asking for the toughest of all-time is very difficult because majority of pro-riders have been injured and returned etc.

The "Flying Finn" Heikki Mikkola! I never saw him ride, but Joel Robert would be near or at the top. I remember reading stories of him chain smoking, out all night boozing and chasing skirts (the JLaw of his time) and he would literally stagger onto the start line just before the start and proceed to smoke everybody on that CZ. Or how about Adolf Weil "the ageless one" I think he was racing competitively GPs well into his 40s on those old Maicos. Jimmy Ellis was also a tough guy the way he could manhandle those crappy old can-am bikes around the track. Also Magoo has to be in the top 5 for sure.
