why should reed get a zero at daytona? he was awarded the points as the rules are written.

He finished as many laps as MOST of the other racers there...more than some even.

It's not a DNF because even though he didn't finish, he finished more laps that everyone 8th place and lower. That's how it works.

I was rooting for Windham too, and if he had won I guarantee there'd be none of this asterisk talk. But he didn't. He had a GREAT season and still finished 2nd, which means he had a worse season than the guy who beat him.

There's no asterisk next to this championship. Bubba has been out for about an entire year now so anybody who even brings his name into it is an idiot, and this was the best season in years. There were FIVE different winners this year! Reed won just over 50% of the races, that's not a runaway, and it was not given to him.

Reed deserves the props. He was the fastest guy this year, and rode through adversity to get the title.
Outstanding on that first bit. Safe to say no tears will be shed.

Totally agree on the 2nd as well.

The blind hate for Reed thing this year has been an odd phenomenon. I have two friends that spew blind hate for the guy as well but when I press them for exact reasons, they can't point to anything specific. Then when I try to remind them it's about riding the bike they still refuse to give the guy any credit. Just bizarre. As for his "fans", I don't see any of his fans making any wild claims, unlike some of the loony fanatics of another particular rider.

I think Reed has basically been smeared by a few haters. I would like to see DIRECT QUOTES of whatever it is Reed has ever said that has so many panties twisted.

Then I'd like to see how hard Bob Hannah would laugh.

Excellent first post and some great comments afterwards.

The only thing I want to add is that I'm sure Reed cares not that some people do not like him. I'm also sure that the bonus check that he'll receive will spend the same as one against James.

Congrats to both Kevin and Chad on a great season.

Somewhere Buckwheat is laughing his ass off at all this

More importantly, we need to clean out some of the more irritating noobs here. They seem to be multiplying.

Let me give you two examples of Chad Reed I know...

One he sent my son (huge fan) an autographed jersey when he was recovering from surgery.

He spent 30 minutes showing him around the factory Yamaha rig and talking with him at Hangtown after practice on Saturday. All he had to do was say hey and my kid would have been on cloud nine. He didn't have to spend the time but he did.

For all that Chad may lack in media polish or the fact I would love to see him ride the Nationals again, at the end of the day he took time to help make a little boy feel like a racer again and for that I will always be a fan of his if for nothing more than as a good man.

Can’t stand the guy, and I will never like him. And it has nothing to do with where he is from... to me that is actually a plus for an outsider to come into the big bad mighty USA and win.... I would rather cheer for the under dog.
But not this guy. I think he is a big fat cocky, lying whiner!!
Really sucks that he won to be honest and I hope he never wins another race never mind title.

It's funny that people sit back and say that they want a racer to be edgy and not the super-sano-Dungey-type. But when you actually have someone that speaks their mind (ie. Reed and J-Law) everyone says it's too much.

I am NOT a Reed fan but he is the only rider in this era that tries to hang with Stewart and RC. He deserves props for that. I don't think anyone can argue that the rest of the field hasn't been satisfied finishing 3rd or further back.

In regards to the "In any other era" post, our sport has always been dominated by a few riders. As good as Reed is, I think he would always have been a 2nd or 3rd place guy, in any era.

So can you produce an actual DIRECT QUOTE from Reed or are you just cranky that Bubba is sitting on the couch?

Actually, in your case I really don't care so never mind.

Scott, give it a rest. You're clinging to a DNF like it's some big deal.

Consider this. He has 97 consecutive starts. 86 of those ended up on the podium.

I dont believe in asterisks beside a Title. Being at the gate, finishing races and earning the most points is the winner, period.
5/6/2008 11:08am
I will never talk bad about a rider who puts in his work. Chad puts in his work and he put himself in the position to win the title, James or not.

It was a great series instead of bitching about all thats wrong, talk about what was good.

Reed is like Kobe Bryant; his skills and competitiveness are beyond question, and so are his achievements. He also does and says enough to turn people off. He, as a competitor, doesn't owe me, a fan, a thing.

More than one thing can be true at the same time.

Chad Reed is the 2008 SX champion and he deserves that title because he earned it in every sense. He's not obliged to make people feel good about him.

I'm not being funny here but how many of us who are talking shit or standing up for the guy actually know him ?

Shaking his hand and getting an autograph doesn't count .

I always thought it was guilty 'till proven innocent.
