Back in the '80's, spectators were not allowed in the pits. I snuck in to the 1980 Saddleback National and clicked off some cool pics...

The Japanese manufacturers went thru a little phase back then where they went Euro-style with the clutch on the LH side and the final drive on the RH side.

I wonder why?

And then they went back to the opposite and have been that way for years. Again, why?

Just rhetorical questions without an answer, I'm sure!

Yea, and at the time, he wasn't what I would classify as "cool." LOL

If memory serves me right 1980 was the year Broc lost the title to Suzuki's Mark Barnette and it was decided at the final event in Tampa Bay, FL. Sunshine Speedway with some of the knarliest sand whoops just short of the Plymouth Hangtown track or maybe Marysville's E Street track. Jeff Ward got his big-boy balls that day when he won a moto - the first I think - by registering on the radar as he flew over the doubles on his Kawasaki passing both Broc and Mark in the air a good 6' above both of them to take the lead and run to the win. Barnette was content with second as Broc cased in the whoops and flattened the head pipe on that trick hand-made expansion chamber. I had that pipe autographed by Broc with a felt pen until a few years ago. It was a neet memento of a trip to Broome-Tioga in up state New York and Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg for the final 2 events of the 125/500 Nationals. And there was "Mad" Beach near the track with the legandary Skip's House of Rock & Roll, which closed down shortly after the race. And Elena... and that's a whole 'nother storie that goes elswhere I'm sure.... Ahhh, the old mind wanders but it finds nice little places to relive those times!

I think they went back to final drive on the left when the works bikes started running disc's in the rear, and thus could keep the brake mechanism all on the right side.

Those were the days, I got chased out of more than one pit area back in the works bike days especially when the rear suspension revolution was in full swing.

That's funny. We would always try to blend in and act like we were part of the crew. Didn't always work!

Your photo's are amazing!

Thanks for posting these awesome photos! The guy in the photos is Jim Felt, Broc's mechanic at the time. He lived a street over from me and I would often see this bike in his garage or in the driveway. It was the first water-cooled bike I had ever seen. Jim's a nice guy and was always kind to us star-struck kids looking at these pieces of art. He later on moved to Honda and wrenched for Johnny O'Mara, so we got to see those beautiful red and blue works bikes too! Jim would give us Broc's once or twice used tires to put on our own bikes instead of throwing them away. He gave me one of Broc's old oval, green front number plates with a #1 on it but I lost it over the years. He also made a vented front number plate for me, because in '82, I had a YZ 125 with a radiator mounted behind the front # plate. Although Jim is not in the MX biz anymore, he now has his own company making high-dollar, high-tech mountain bikes for racing. Thanks for bringing back some great memories!

mxvet, I should have tried blending in more maybe that would have helped.

I always had the feeling that the other manufacturers always got the photos of these bikes without having us regular MX shooters do the spy work for them.

I have some too, wish I could find them It was the year Scott Gillman rode for Suzuki. Was that 80? I remember that I got a similar shot of Wardy's 125. We did a lot of scooting around the pits trying to dodge security. That was alot of fun. Also had some awesome slides from Moates win at USGP and the Saddleback massacre, 81?. I just have to spend a lot of time going through pics scattered at differnet places.

Somehow, Brocs bike had sand in the gas tank during one of the moto's and was running like garbage. Word was, that some other mechanic might have put it in the gas can, which were all in an area controlled by the AMA. What did he loose the title to Barnett by...I think it was 2 points.

Awesome pictures. That was one of the trickest bikes at the time. I was lucky enough to see Broc race it at Broome Tioga that year. If memory serves, Barnett put it to Broc that day. Though it still amazes me how both of them consistently ripped off lap after lap. I think Johnny O was on the Mugen that year as well.

Yeah...I was at Broome Tioga the week before the Sunshine final. Broc was the natural wonder-boy who rode the ultra-trick OW's while the Suzooks were more conventional though still cutting edge. But Barnett was such a physicallybfit stud with that total Zen-like focus and determination. I believe Barnett's will of steel was the edge that pushed him passed the Golden Boy's domination of the class and gave him that slight edge to wrerstle the championship away at the end. I think both riders stepped onto a higher level because of this and Broc grew more mature and less "spoiled". From Broc's first victory at Plymouth in the 125 Expert class aboard the water-cooled DG yamaha he always had the best machines available. 6-months before Broome I ate ice creame with Broc and teammate Donnie Cantaloupi at Ferrell's ice creame 2-days before Hangtown. Broc said at that time - and I never betrayed his trust until now about stating this to me- he said the Suzuki's were superior machines to his Yamaha's. Maybe Yamaha stepped up to the plate and gave Broc the better bikes by year's end but it could be argued that it was too little to late or maybe that the man can make up for the machines' inequities by pushing his own body and mind a little further than the competition. 2-point edge to the man of steel in the end. And even when i READ THIS TOMORROW I'll stick to this. It was an epic battle that was incredible to witness. Oh yeah....I remember watching the Broome Tioga event while i sat behind Doug Domokos as the Wheelie King cruised the track on one wheel. That man had some balance...

This picture was taken at Sunshine speedway MX in 78 or 79 ?

Also have a Broc Glover story to go with it,,

About 2-3 days before the St Pete, Fla MX Nat., me and a guy Named Joe Cartier, were practicing for the amatuer day,at a riding area(down the side road from Sunshine,,)we ahd stopped to take a break, whena Yamaha Box van pulls up, and Felts and broc Glover , get out unload his bike, and Brocs starts practicing, we were standing by a turn watching, him rail a sandy corner, one time 2 times then, he lays it down, well he gets up, comes over to us and says"Even a guy with the #1 plate can make mistakes", me and Joe both agreed, and we also became instant fans of Broc.

I was hoping to make an aircooled replica of Broc's bike out of my '80 YZ 125, but now I have lost interest. It's for sale here.

oldschoolmxr203, that would be 1979. Here's Broc and steed at the '78 event:

It wasn't until 1979 that the side number plates went Europeeish.

That place down the road from Sunshine you're referring to- was that kinda in the southwest corner of where 686 goes under I-275? I used to practice there, and got to break in Hannah's and Savitski's YZ-250s (showroom stock at that point) there before the '79 Winter-AMA Series.
