What food did you think you hated until someone made it properly?

A vegetable your parents boiled into submission, a steak that wasn’t cooked into a roofing shingle, or something you’d only ever eaten out of a can, etc.

What changed your mind, and did you ever tell the person who’d been ruining it for you?

Brussels sprouts for me as well... they were a mini soggy cabbage by mum's recipe, and I only recently in my early 60s have tried them cooked properly!

Any canned green or waxed bean as well; boiled to oblivion. Do they still make "yellow waxed beans" 🤢

I don't recall ever telling mum! She was an angel LOL

I think a majority of people hated, or severely disliked, brussels sprouts when they were young. Same with me, and I love roasted brussels sprouts now.

My mom ruined asparagus for me for a long time. It wasn’t until I went away to college that I realized that you didn’t have to boil them for a half hour to cook them. The tragedy of it was that we had practically unlimited amounts of asparagus available during the season near the river. If I had ever had them steamed or grilled, I probably would have had them every day!

And yes, she knew how much I disliked her asparagus!

Not perfectly on topic - but I was an adult before I ever tried brussel sprouts or collard greens. I cant get my old lady to touch either. I keep the shitty canned collards in the pantry all the time, and love to eat them - even if they are 50% stems. There is a BBQ spot 15 minutes from me with excellent collards - I could make a entire meal out of them and be perfectly content.812

The Navy absolutely ruined white asparagus for me for this exact reason. Straight disgusting mush. I haven't had the opportunity to try it recently, so not sure if I'd actually like it or not. I love green asparagus, though, so it's likely I would.

My mom also used to always use canned peas when we were growing up. I grew up thinking that peas were all drab green and mushy. Hated them, but now I love peas.

Almost everything she made from scratch was absolutely great, though. I’d give almost anything to have just one more meal with her pinto beans and fried potatoes. My wife has made a valiant effort to try to duplicate those, but it just never quite comes out the same.

None. There is no food I disliked in my entire life that I like now. (And let me tell you, there are a lot of foods I don't like!)

For me, it's not about the preparation; it's about the inherent flavor of the food. For instance, I hate seafood. There is no food that lived underwater that I like. Why? It all tastes like seafood, no matter how you cook it. Blech!

Tomatoes.  Liked ketchup, salsa, tomato soup, maranara, etc, but despised raw tomatoes.  The flavor and texture, uggg.  My mother in law changed my mind with some vine ripened maters from her garden.  They are delicious and I now grow maters every year.

There is nothing you could do to Brussel Sprouts, Cilantro or Cauliflower that would make them taste good.  Cilantro tastes like straight up dish soap, brussel sprouts maybe could be saved if they were wrapped in bacon and bbq sauce and grilled, maybe. Cauliflower ?  Fuck no. Cottage cheese is another food that'll make me dry heave just by smelling it.  My Mom used to serve us Liver and onions once a week, even the dog wouldn't eat that shit 🤮

Not that it was horrible, but just the 'American' taco. The hard shell from Walmart, some ground beef, fake seasoning, and a sprinkle of fiesta cheese from a bag. About 10 years ago, I'm 45 now, and I had my first ever real taco from a Taco truck. Phenomenal.

Cheese.

Mom used to have a brick of Velveeta that she used when a recipe called for cheese. Disgusting.

Now I know and like most proper cheese.

If you were 35 before eating a real taco, you may be entitled to compensation. Call us for a free consultation, or just go visit your local Mexican restaurant.

I could never get use to eating Velveeta. All that cheese stuff was good for was trout bait! My wife introduced me to all different types of cheese for different foods.

Steak, growing up my mother's was always well done and chewy. Wasn't until I was in my 20's that I had good steak. I've since then perfecting cooking it on my own.

Had some people over a few months ago and one was a chef, used to hate Brussel Sprouts with a passion as a kid, grew to like them as I got older, then this young kid showed me how to cook then in the juices of the pork roast that he showed me how to do a better job on (that's another story!) They were roasted to perfection and the flavor was off the charts, now I cant get enough of them!!

It’s the texture.  I grew to like stewed okra but needed it a bit al dente. Today I’ll eat anything. In fact, if you ask my kids what’s going on my tombstone, it’s “He’ll Eat Anything”. Must be present tense.

Yup, Brussel Sprouts and Cauliflower give me the"'dry heaves" too!

Nothing can get me to eat them.

Had to look up Cilantro - but, in the listing, it said how " about 15 to  20% of people had a gene : OR6A2 -  that makes it taste like Soap  to them " - I guess I don't have it, as there seem to be no leafy Greens that I encounter that do that to me.

Hated Broccoli for around 40 years, then 'discovered' it , and the long stem Broccolini, Uncooked.  I keep a couple of  'Trees' of them in my workshop fridge, along with Cucumbers, and Carrots and other Vegies and Fruits to munch on during the day. BUT - they All have to be Uncooked - I seem to only like all of them raw. Love the various Mini tomato's that are available - the fridge 'stash' stops me from eating garbage .

I think a Lot of my Food Weirdness, comes from my Mums cooking, ( Dad was a Great cook, when he wasn't stationed ) when I was a Kid - she was ( still is) a dreadful cook, and just destroyed what was probably good food. All she wanted to make, was Disgusting Stews. She still does - I've her in my home, and just evacuate the kitchen , well the House, when she's cooking , AND, have Not sat down to a meal with her in Years. Though, that is not just due to her food, it's that, though I still Do love her - she's my Mum - but I dislike her. She's a nasty piece of work, that my Brothers will have little to do with, so I'm saddled with her.......... 😖

Oh, not to forget  : Pumpkin - no way Jose . Unless it's a liquid Soup, then I can stomach it.
