Should I ban myself from working on my YZ250?

My YZ250 air screw seized up, so naturally I stripped it. Then I broke out the screw extractor and ended up completely butchering the carb body threads.

Is replacing the carb body/entire assembly the only path forward?

Yes to the first question.

No to the second question, from the photo, that looks recoverable, the treads go a long way into the carb, I'd help, somebody local may be able to help you.

Oh,

That's a bummer.

I have 2 carbs that are in great condition, one Mikuni 38 and one smart carb 2.

The Mikuni has the Jarvis mods and the smart carb has 2 needles.

Both were for a KTM 250xc, they will work on a yz with a little tuning.

I had the smart carb on a yz 24' 250x but took it off when I sold the bike.

$500 for the pair....if you're interested....lmk

Messing stuff up is the cost of gaining knowledge.

I broke off an axle holder stud on a front fork of my bike back when I was a lot more ham-fisted.  Not possible to use an extractor.  I went to a couple of places and found a metal fabrication/welding shop that used an electronic device to essentially destroy the bolt in the bore while leaving the fork leg completely undamaged.  Just had to clean out the remains of the bolt threads in the bolt bore.  This was back in the 80s so I'd imagine this tech is pretty widespread now in decent metal fab/welding shops.  Good luck -- the joys of wrenching on your own machine!

You initially think it’s quicker to do it on the bike.
You have learned it is not.

Sinker EDM.

A machinists best friend after you bust off a tap in a $10,000 block of 7075. Don't ask me how i know.

OP, there's hundreds, or thousands of take-off stock carbs collecting dust on peoples spare parts shelves with all the aftermarket options being installed. put out an ISO you'll find something for next to nothing. You gave it an honest whack. extractors can be tricky! Keep wrenching.

Buy a second hand / new take off carb, install it with your current settings and let ‘er rip! Then take this carb apart piece by piece and learn how they come apart / go together. Good opportunity to learn!

No you shouldn’t, plenty of us have had to learn by constantly fucking things up. Anyone who tells you they don’t make mistakes is a liar.

My wife never makes mistakes, she's always right.
