Another Tomac thread, but! Even this week on podcasts guys still talk about Stew being 2nd all time in total wins while Tomac passed Stew this year. We have a Jett tracker on this forum and we like to break wins up by SX and MX but Tomac has 57 450 SX wins, 32 450 MX wins and 12 250 MX wins. Which means he has 101. He’s only the second guy to pass 100 total wins and there is not much fan fare behind it. IMO total wins is the most impressive stat as far as wins are concerned.

RC-150 Tomac - 101 Stew - 98 and MC - 89

Wins are the most important stat!

For whatever reason, they want to penalize Eli for racing longer.

If RC kept going like guys today and barring injuries it’s hard to not think he would have hit 200 wins with relative ease.

Agree Tomac’s legendary status is understated.
However imo 250 wins don’t have the same prestige. How do those numbers look without 250 wins? I expect Stew drops down.

Not a chance.  By 2007, Stewart had his number indoors and I'd wager #7 would take a win or 3 off him outdoors in '08.

50 wins is a lot.

Tomac is still second all time with 89, Stew drops to 70. Stew is still the most frustrating racer giving up another potential perfect season in 09 450 MX. That tv show of his slightly was scripted but the part about his dad saying your racer, you race that was real. MC has 87, RC 124.

The biggest thing about RC staying in it would have been that it would have Kept Stew focused, he didn’t think of Reed as a huge threat IMO and probably didn’t think the Ryan’s would be what they became but he would have still gotten hurt. Stew was out in 08 SX he didn’t race 09 MX and in 2010 Yamaha turned that bike to shit for five years. RD was at the farm in 2010 and overweight RC could jump on the bike and still be awfully competitive in lap times with RD and potentially having better times a time or two in sprint laps.

Yeah I just think 450 wins alone, being the premier class, is a truer stat for legendary status.
Tomac being between the GOAT and MC seems fair, and as blazing fast and unbelievable as Stew was, he just didn’t rack up the wins on the same level. Partly because he had to deal with RC.

He crashed his brains out of several championships. The results don’t lie.

With 101 wins and then who knows how many podiums does he have a separate pole barn for all them trophies alone?

Tomac, Hannah, JS7 just had some of the most entertaining races ever. Something special for sure. Probably ET had more than any of them.

There was a time when Barcia was a rookie in the 450 class.
He held Dungey and Villopoto off for most of the first moto one race.
Anybody on here remember when and what track that was.
Barcia was always a bad dude.  Didnt care for him until the last 8 years.  Good shit!!

No, wins are not all that counts. That perfect season is hard to look past and Fastest man on the planet, rings loud.

Horseshit. Championships are all that matters. Ask the factories. RC is the GOAT for a reason and had a perfect season before anyone. As I said, Stewart was fast but crashed himself out of contention way too many times.

Stew’s biggest challenge was himself. Had he dialed it back 10% he wouldn’t have missed nearly as many races as he did.

It is impressive 101 wins, however, I don't think  the total win number is really descriptive or the qualifier for what I would consider the "greatest" rider. Its like a player in the NBA who has 30,000 pts but stayed in the league 25 years are they the best player? Not necessarily.

Putting Tomac ahead of RV to me is insane. RVs percentages are unbelievable. He was basically never beat when he was healthy. Honestly Eli having 57 SX wins and only 2 titles really hurts him in terms of these dumb comparisons we like to make about legacy bc the efficiency is so bad when you compare him to the others.

I'm not putting him ahead of dungey either.  RD5 doesn't get enough credit for winning both 450 titles his rookie year.

Tomac is still an all time great though,  obviously.

Yupper. Which is why the Ryan's both rank above Eli on the all timer list

Since this has turned into somewhat of an all time list as where you place Eli.
1. RC 2. RV 3. MC 4. RJ 5. Hannah 6. Stew 7. RD 8. ELI 9. Wardy 10. Stanton

You can argue that Stew is too high but he changed the game worldwide and Eli could be higher but his bad days were like wtf. RD could be higher but taking into account RV he is well placed. People sleep on Hannah and RJ they didn’t race nearly as much as modern guys. Plug there win percentages into 17 race SX series and they have 10 plus wins in a season on there good years.

No need to rank any of the greats. They all dominated in their era. Multi time champions across moto and supercross, all bad dudes on a dirt bike!

I'm pretty sure Stew said, on one of his podcasts, that seeing Eli's speed when he was coming up, worried him. He was still racing at that point, and didn't want to have to go that fast. Coming from him, that's gotta mean something.

Impossible to compare MXGP vs AMA in careers. MX only vs SX and MX.

I’ve only ever seen RC, JS, and ET3 stomp the living shit out of other would-be goats—at their peak. What Eli did to prime RD in ‘15 mx for me ends all discussions about who is superior. From then on RD had to capitalize whenever Eli shit the bed and that was about all he could do to beat Eli. 10yrs later, at age 32, Eli man handled 21yr old prime Jett Lawrence at the ‘25 San Diego sx in their first fully healthy head to head match up, which none of the younger guys could manage to do at that time and still can’t today if Jett is fully healthy.

Eli has a case for Top 3 all time given his span of accomplishments. The gravity of his individual performances can’t be understated. Much like JS, the raw stats hardly tell the entire story for Eli. Guys like RD had great consistency, but they never managed to leave your jaw on the floor. Eli has dozens of jaw dropping performances against three generations of competition to go along with the stats.

Some of the riders that Eli curb stomped while they were at the height of their power and fully healthy:

Ryan Dungey

Ken Roczen

Tony Cairoli

Jett Lawrence

Cooper Webb

Chase Sexton

Only JS has more impressive scalps having smoked RC, CR, RD and RV.

You could make the same argument for Eli vs Ken. Ken won two titles before his injury and had far more wins than Eli. It takes more than just one day of insane riding like Eli in hangtown 2015. A fully healthy Eli would have 10th place finishes out of no where. If Dungey got 4th people were thought the sky was falling.

I’d argue that Kenny only got those two titles because of Eli’s injuries. Eli absolutely smoked Kenny in 2013 outdoors, then the meat grinder of 450 sx took him out. Kenny in 2016 outdoors was one of the best mx season I’ve ever witnessed, but hard to say that 2015 perfect season until getting hurt Eli wouldn’t have been up for the challenge. That woulda been such an epic summer!

Omg I cant with the Eli 2015 shit. It was insane, yes! For 6 motos. There's 24 in a season, folks. Maybe he was riding over his head pushing those gaps. He never beat Dunge for a title. And you wanna play the woulda, coulda, should, game? If RD doesn't retire in his prime he wins the '17 mx title, EASY. Also '18 sx over Ando. But without those titles he still has more than Eli retiring much younger. The Ryan's > Eli
