I saw that Bultaco is building a small bore 300 adventure bike. They are having it built in China. I wonder if they will end up being the next manufacturer to rejoin motocross racing? Will there be a Stark Varg or 450 Bultaco lining up on the gate first?
Spec wise, and price wise, this bike looks like it would be a fun around town bike or entry level adventure bike. If the quality is decent , I'm sure they will sell . $4600 USD is what the price converts to before any tariffs or import fees are added. I hope that its only the beginning of a full on return and not a one off bike that just damages the name.
I know this bike is not a motocross bike, I'm posting in moto related because I am wondering what people would think about their return to MX and thoughts on Chinese owned legacy brands making motocross bikes and using the names . Bultaco is not Chinese owned .Leonart motors , a Spanish motorcycle brand is behind the relaunch of Bultaco. But it got me wondering about what if a Chinese factory bought a name and built bikes under that name, made a series effort to compete and make a solid bike. But buy a well known name of a past brand ( even if that brand did not build MX bikes) to use instead of their own?
I got the info and photos from
https://powersportsbusiness.com/news/motorcycle/2026/09/02/bultaco-retu…;

The Rally GT 300 was developed in collaboration with Spanish motorcycle manufacturer Leonart and is manufactured in China. According to RideApart, the model represents a more practical approach to reviving the Bultaco name, rather than attempting to directly recreate one of the company’s historic models.
Bultaco describes the Rally GT 300 as an everyday adventure motorcycle designed for urban riding, highway travel and light off-road use. The motorcycle is powered by a 292cc single-cylinder engine with DOHC, four valves, liquid cooling and Bosch electronic fuel injection. The company claims 28 horsepower at 9,500 rpm and 25 Nm of torque and is paired with a six-speed transmission and multidisc oil-bath clutch.
The Rally GT 300 uses a perimeter frame, inverted front fork and rear monoshock. Disc brakes are fitted at both ends with ABS. Bultaco lists a claimed weight of 331 pounds (150 kg), a 34.8-inch (883mm) seat height, 10.2 inches (260mm) of ground clearance and a 4.2-gallon (16-liter) fuel tank. A 19-inch front wheel and 17-inch rear wheel are intended to balance on-road handling with off-road capability.
The bike also incorporates several modern features, including an integrated dash camera that automatically records in five-minute loops. Riders can save footage for safety or to document rides. A five-inch TFT display provides information including speed, rpm, gear position and fuel level, while LED lighting is used throughout the motorcycle.
Bultaco/Leonart says its racing division, Bultaco Racing, was involved in tuning the Rally GT 300’s handling characteristics. The company lists the model at €3,999 (~$4,600 USD) in Spain, positioning it as a relatively affordable entry into the adventure motorcycle segment.

Ossa has been threatening to make a comeback too. They should both join forces with Rieju and make some super trick and cool stuff.
331 pounds and 28 horsepower...
I thought Bultaco was bought out by Sherco?
I'm still waiting on a CZ comeback...
yea man!
Now that's a name that China could buy and it would not sound strange to be a Chinese brand. Just going off of the name alone, not accounting for the history of CZ which I know very little about, But of all the names of old brands I can think of that one seems like it would not sound strange to find out it was Chinese.
I was going off the info in the article. When KTM bought Gasgas they didn't buy the enduro platform. And KTM pedal bikes are not a KTM brand.
Perhaps Sherco owns the rights to a mx or totally off road Bultaco and this being a more street based bike , those rights are owned by Leonart ?
I will look into it more when I get a chance, or feel free to post what You know about Sherco and Bultaco if you know details . It would suck to see a brand name sold and watered down like that. But it wouldn't be the first.
Maybe, but what if they had a competitive MX bike?
I am looking forward to the first Chinese bike that is built to be the best and not just be a lower price option. It will be interesting to see what useless features they add. Like in their cars, they have cars that can jump. And so many wild luxuries in their luxury cars, its over the top. I could see China making the first mass produced MX bike with electronic suspension. Something that had a jump mode that would use the suspension to bunny hop the bike. And the use of gyros for self wheeling modes.
After seeing some of the cars they are building now, I know they can do it. I don't think there is a market for a high quality Chinese brand bike that isn't also cheaper right now. But I see the possibility of a Chinese made electric MX bike being so good that people buy it for its performance and quality over other options. I think that people buying electric bikes are more open to new tech, and China is making some really amazing electronics . So good that they almost killed off Gopro. But that is more of a future statement, not one that reflects most Chinese bikes right now.
More motorcycles is better.
They are running it as its own brand and plan on producing some motorcycles that are proprietary and designed by the new Bultaco from the ground up in 2027. Bultaco Next SL. is the official name of the company. I only saw plans for more lower displacement street motorcycles. a 350cc retro road racer styled bike and a 500 twin cylinder street bike. And they plan on continuing to have the bikes built in China . CF moto makes the engine in the adventure bike.
The electric pedal version looks like it would be fun. Only 75 miles of claimed range on those, and 40 on the earlier bikes. I can see why they failed. But I still think they would be a fun bike to have for exploring or hanging on the back of an RV, or around the pits at a race.
CZ had a few bikes built about 10-12 years ago as I recall. Thought they might make a go of it. Guess not.
Yes, more motorcycles—and properly reviving a brand—is absolutely welcome. But if this is simply a half-hearted effort to cash in on a legacy and build a brand off someone else’s past success, then no thanks. China can pump out widgets all day long, but they still seem to struggle when it comes to building a truly authentic brand.
My 'ADV' bike (i wish it were closer to one) is a Moto Morini X-Cape 649. Designed and engineered in Milan, Italy but built in China. I compare it to chicken parmigiana-stir fry.
It is still a Spanish owned company in this case.
I had proposed the question of China buying a brand and reviving it. But that is not the case with Bultaco.
Leonart Motors is the company behind the relaunch. They use China to build their bikes
Honda has been having generators and small engines made in China for a while. And the CRF110 might just be the best Chinese built pit bike.
KTM also has complete bikes made in China.
This Bultaco relaunch is not looking like the Penton relaunch that used Chinese bikes. It sounds like the future bikes will be more like the Honda's that are built in China. Designed by Bultaco engineers and built in Chinese factories. Similar to Honda with its 50, 110 and many CRF trail bikes
Pit Row
IF Bultaco does move forward with more bikes, they should NOT ignore the nostalgia and likely popularity of a retro style bike of some sort. It has worked remarkably well in many “motor” industries. Mustang, Camaro, Bronco for example. RC10 (might be overplayed now) was a huge hit…. If done right, they would sell all they could make. Just keep it from feeling Chinese.
More motorcycles is better regardless.
As a Bultaco owner at a certain early period, here's hoping the Chinese pot metal is better than the original Spanish 😉
That is one of the models that I saw them say they were working on. A retro racer style bike is how they described it. still smaller CC, 350 and then they will have a 500 twin , but I didn't see what that was planned to be in.
It would be cool if they make decent bikes and are able to grow to the point that they put out a MX bike again.
A TM, branded as CZ.
I can't recall the exact details of the set up between TM and whoever was CZ at the time.
actually, that's pretty good range for an E-MTB, though we typically measure in time between charges rather than miles. I think my E-MTB is supposed to average up to 4 1.5 hrs rides on a charge- but could be more or less depending on how much you use Turbo mode 😉
Interesting, thanks for digging into this . Is this an existing platform with a brand name applied to it? What used to be known as ""badge engineering" in the automotive realm?
Well, uh, your beloved brand has Chinese manufacture models and content 🤣
Yah if you look at it as an EMTB its really good range. But I think they were selling it as a motorcycle so it sounds bad. They were calling it an electric motorcycle with pedal assist option. It sounds like it may have just been too powerful to sell as a bicycle.
My Canyon EMTB has a bigger battery that I have not ridden with as much as the smaller one yet. But I doubt I could get close to that range. Maybe they should have marketed it differently. As a bicycle that is great range. But I think its way too fast with the throttle to be called a bicycle. Maybe they would have sold better if they limited them from the factory so they could still call them an ebike and then offer some aftermarket hop ups to get them up to the performance level they can be at.
I wonder if they may have been able to stay going if they had survived long enough to get the covid bump that happened. They shut down just before or maybe at the start of it.
Bultaco, BSA, CZ, Cagiva, Can-Am, let's bring them all back into the fray.
This version is, the company that is reviving the name sells the same bike under their name. They said there are some changes ,but its pretty much the same bike with a name put on it.
But they say they are working on 2 models that will be Bultaco exclusive bikes. they described one as a "retro style road racer" . It is going to be a 350. And they are also working on a 500cc twin engine design that will be in another bike that is designed by them. I didn't see anything that said what the 500 engine was being built for as far as what style of bike. The company that is behind the relaunch has mostly small bore street bikes and that adventure style bike. On their website they show it with dirt tires and it looks better to me.
Spec'd similar to the Royal Enfield Himalayan.
Year of the bull isn't until 2033, so they have some time to develop a full race bike 😃
