Oh man that sucks. 😞 We're going to Zion to hike the narrows next week, guess I'll keep an eye on the local weather yikes. Prayers out to the missing people

I read they helicoptered out 50 people, had not seen that 20 more were still missing.

From an expert end-user of weather reports and charts and radar etc..... don't worry about the local area, be EXTREMELY cognizant of areas upstream of where you'll be, in the catchment areas of the canyons.

I haven't seen the news about the GC floods, but I'll bet a case of PBR  it was clear skies overhead.

Monsoon rains 100 miles away upstream >> flash floods downstream. AZ monsoon has been heavy this summer, first time in 3 or 4 years. Not sure how far nortth that extends.

Keep a close eye on RADAR MAPS of upstream areas. Don't trust TV weather muppets, they don't know DICK.

I sure as fuck is monsoon season. This is as humid as I can remember in So Cal. It happens every year but this year is bad. It all comes from the monsoons. The desert explodes in color. Just watch it from high ground.

It's beautiful and green, but humid as balls some days. It was 50% one day last week.

IN ARIZONA!!!

You're probably aware already,  but the Narrows can have some extreme flash floods this time of year.  Take care down there!

Your not kidding, we used to spend a lot of time during summers in Havasu. You knew when certain clouds and a particular time of day, you had about 15-20 to get all the shades down packed and back to the marina/motorhome. And the skies dumped and the wind blew crazy. You did not want to be on the lake during that. And when it dumps like that, the ground can't absorb it, the small streams feed bigger streams, combine with more streams until you have flash flooding.  A few years back Palm Springs had some major roads wash away from flash floods.

That is true,

It is what caused so much damage from helene in Tennessee and north carolina.

I live about 6 miles from the hospital in Erwin, TN that they ordered evacuated. The water rose so fast it flooded all the ambulances. after high winds settled down they ended up plucking about 50 people off the roof with helos.

We only got about 3 inches of rain in the two days the storm went through where I live, but parts of NC 40 miles upstream got over 20.

Sun was out and it was a beautiful breezy day while it completely washed away a 100 yard long bridge a mile from us. Entire houses caught against it turning it from a bridge into a dam.

Thanks for the heads up !! We know to keep an eye one the weather upstream more than local, but I wasn't thinking 100 miles upstream. It makes sense. We have other options for entertainment if there's even a slight possibility. I've been there before, it wouldn't take that much water to get scary quick. As you guys know it's not a very wide canyon. We're staying in a hotel with a pool in Kanab. We'll have the grandkids, e-bikes, 4x4's and swimming suits. Might check out Bryce canyon and the sand dunes depending on how things go.

the entire state of UT has been having some insane monsoon weather the last few weeks. we had a big flash flood up by our cabin in the Uintah mountain range not too long ago. just crazy weather. and as everyone knows, just because it isn't storming nearby doesn't mean it's not a torrential down-pour 20 miles up the river.

I'd stay out of the narrows altogether if I were going. Weather can change really fast, and with the burn scars everywhere it's a gamble even if there's only a 10% chance of rain. Utah weather is Bi Polar

Obviously good advice, but it actually does sound like this event was from a heavy downpour very near where the people are missing. Which actually makes it even more incredible, because that’s a huge amount of water from a relatively small footprint!
