Russia / Ukraine

Maybe once a week (if that) I see a Russia/Ukraine news article and it’ll outline how many casualties are taking place. Looks like maybe 30k a month on average for the Russian side alone seems to be what I read on a regular basis. Isn’t that extreme? Is this not a significant problem?

It seems as if it’s only casually mentioned like the weather is at this point in the news.

How is the entire world not hyper fixated on this? Am I missing something? You’d think there would be more interest or concern. Is it because I don’t have cable news and my feed isn’t prioritizing it? Or is it intentional? I could just be totally ignorant?

I’ve read a couple of opinion pieces that have said that Russia is getting very close to losing Crimea, but it’s hard to verify a lot of the reasoning behind the claims. Would be awesome if true, but you just never know…..

If true, they are saying that fatalities are outpacing recruitment. Also saw where US intelligence has warned of possible aggressions towards NATO countries.

I wish the rogue army had made it to Moscow. The leader died in a “plane crash”, bet he wishes he could take that piece negotiation back.

The rest of the world is fixated on it & totally stunned that American “leadership” is on the side of the aggressor. Never would have believed I would see this behaviour from the USA. Shameful.

The reality of the situation is Russia can continue the grind a lot longer than Ukraine can, and they know it.  It’s not a popular opinion, but the only way this ends is if western powers stop pumping Ukraine with weapons and money, forcing them to the negotiating table to end this madness.

But, unfortunately the leaders of this country see this war as an incredible opportunity to weaken Russia and get them wrapped up in an endless conflict, just like the USSR did in Afghanistan (and us later on ironically).  They don’t care how many Ukrainians die in the process and they don’t even consider the Russians as people so their deaths are irrelevant to them.  It’s a disgusting and disgraceful game they’re playing and it sickens to me to my core than my tax dollars are being used to fund this insanity, but such is life in the empire I guess.  For a country full of generous and hard working people who just want to live their lives peacefully, it’s incredible how much moral decay there really is at the top steps of Washington.

What would they have to negotiate with if they had no backing? Seems like a terrorist state the size of russia that's actively expanding its territory by force, goes well beyond a live and let live type of management. I'm not sure that money even has any meaning by comparison.

This comparison at the bottom really puts it in scale.

The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has generated over 2 million total military casualties, marking an intensity and scale unseen for a major global power since World War II. Data from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)indicates that Russian forces have suffered roughly 1.4 million casualties, including up to 450,000 fatalities, while Ukrainian forces have sustained around 625,000 casualties. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Comparison to Previous Russian and Soviet Wars

The human cost for Russia in Ukraine vastly outnumbers all of its military operations since 1945 combined. [1]

  • Soviet-Afghan War (1979–1989): Russian battlefield deaths in Ukraine are more than 17 times greater than the estimated 15,000 Soviet fatalities suffered during the decade-long occupation of Afghanistan. [1]
  • Chechen Wars (1994–2009): Ukraine fatalities are 11 times higher than Russia's combined losses across both the First and Second Chechen Wars. [1]
  • Historical Combined Total: Russia's deaths in Ukraine are more than five times greater than all Russian and Soviet conflicts since World War II combined. [1]

Comparison to Historic U.S. Conflicts

To put the scale of Russia's losses into perspective, its 450,000 fatalities are more than four times the total U.S. military fatalities across all of its major foreign wars since 1945. [6]
ConflictTotal Battlefield FatalitiesTimeframe
Russia-Ukraine War (Russia only)~450,0004.5 Years (2022–Present)
Russia-Ukraine War (Ukraine only)~140,0004.5 Years (2022–Present)
Korean War (U.S. Losses)54,4873 Years (1950–1953)
Vietnam War (U.S. Losses)47,434~10 Years (1965–1973)
Iraq War (U.S. Losses)4,4328 Years (2003–2011)
Afghanistan War (U.S. Losses)2,46520 years (2001–2021)
Gulf War (U.S. Losses)1491 Year (1990–1991)

Modern Attrition Warfare

The massive casualty figures are driven by a return to high-intensity industrial warfare, heavily reliant on massive artillery volume, trench defenses, dense minefields, and relentless drone strikes. Experts note that while the conflict resembles World War I in its static, grinding attrition, the addition of precise, AI-enabled strike capabilities has significantly accelerated the daily casualty rates on both sides. [5, 6, 7]

IMO, it will not stop before it grows to include many more players.

You’d probably have to ask some really old French guys to truly get to the root cause of that……

Domino Effect. Made sense on paper. Didn’t pan out in reality.

Lately…

Ukraine has done a damn good job of taking out Russian logistics routes, distribution centers and the supporting infrastructure.

They’ve hit Russian refineries deep inside of Russia, too.

As for Crimea? Access to fuel and regular daily supplies for the civilians has been masterfully disrupted by the Ukrainians.

We’re about 6 months away from calling this a 5 year war.

Fuck Russia. Fuck Putin.

Btw, what side of this are China, Iran & North Korea on?

I was a very young kid at the time, and I wondered how they taught the Gorillas how to shoot the guns 🤣 . Many of the nightly newscasts mentioned how many of our soldiers were killed by their gorillas.

It may be my age, but this is what I think of when I hear those lyrics. 😆

I saw a segment on the news the other day about North Korean soldiers fighting for Russia .  They found a notebook with  notes about informing on other North Korean soldiers and how they will die before allowing themselves to be captured.  Often putting grenades under their chins and laying on their stomachs , either after being shot as they die or pretending to be dead and then when somebody checks them the grenade takes them out.

Its crazy how dedicated they are and how willing to die they are.  Wild what other people are willing to do to other people. Brain washing and using them .  Its all so similar to marketing a product. As I research and learn about all the technics used  for marketing I see it being used in so many areas of life. It's scary to see at the levels some take it to. But its all so similar and connected much more than I thought it would be.

There are many ways  people are making money off the wars. I have a customer who is very wealthy that buys up tons of currency from countries that are at war. The pay off is when the war ends and rebuilding begins. But the war part is needed. The defense companies obviously make money building the weapons.  The changes in values of other assets also open up money making opportunities . Anytime somebody can buy low, and hold onto the thing until the market returns there is money to be made. Also shifting the supply , increased demand for some stuff Like oil.  There are so many ways people both make and lose money on wars.

I hope I never become greedy enough to consider the loss of life as an acceptable cost of doing business.

Amen to the last part brother, I worked with a fella who I deemed to be intelligent. He once told me there is no such thing as an ethical billionaire. What was hilarious is he was a giant Taylor Swift fan, I asked him if he thought she made a billion ethically. I did not receive a reply. 😆
