My wife is ready to get a Specialized E bike that more street oriented so I went with her to the store so now I am thinking about finding a used specialized mountain bike.

I found a 2023 Levo S3 carbon that will fit all my needs thats 2 hours from me so I might jump on it.

What your input?

You are right to look for an e-bike if you want to ride with your wife. I got my girl a Liv e-bike that is sort of a city/commuter bike. I have only an "analog" MTB. Now, I'm a Motocross/MTB athlete and she's... well, let's just say she never met a potato chip she didn't like. But she absolutely roasts me on the road, on climbs, and anywhere else we go because of the e-bike. I'm not kidding when I say she could absolutely leave me for dead on the side of any road, trail, or path. Haha.

The Levo is state of the art, from what I understand. If it's in your budget, go for it.

Levo's are good but be aware they often have motors go out on them.  I swear every one of my buddies had them swapped out at some point on theirs.

I noticed a used one that mentioned it had a rebuilt motor and wondered why? What did it do so I know what to watch out for.

Nice bike. I mostly ride my analog bikes because e bikes aren’t allowed anywhere here 😣 but if I had more opportunities, I would take it out more. Especially fun with a group on a low traffic day or with the wife.

Has this opened up to general E bike questions as of yet?

If so, I am an analog guy. Mainly ride the trails around Simi Valley and the Santa Monica mountains. On average, you get 1000 feet of climbing per hour.  I like to ride for about three hours, which is usually between 18 and 20 miles. I borrowed a buddies turbo levo just to test the waters on the dark side. The thing usually dies after two hours at around 25 miles and I have to pedal it in, which is a pain in the ass. I end up with around 4 to 5000 feet but I don’t get the workout I am looking for. I figured I’d still do the three hours and get 40 miles or whatever. I kept it in trail mode because in the lowest setting you’re fighting the drag of the motor. Any suggestions out there for a bike that would go the distance for me ? I liked the Suspension of that bike , but would prefer one that pedals easier once the battery is gone.
    thanks

They've been around for quite a while.

8 yrs ago a friend raced the continental divide bike race on one.

Relatively maintenance free.

Horizontal rear drop outs for tension control. Spare belt rolls up easily in a tool kit.

She carried the spare belt, but didn't need it.

And no broken links.   I’ve seen  them while riding with my guys that are on the E bikes. One probably saved my life though.  I’ve been off the bike for at least six months and he broke a link In the transition area of hell  at Sycamore Canyon.  My heart was pounding and I was starting to get that blackout stuff that tells you to stop but my ego said go. To this day, I thank God for E bikes and the weak link in their chains.     Would also like to do a shout out for a hero of mine Mike Bell. Ever since his demise on his mountain bike, I usually pull over when I start getting the black stuff hanging out in the peripheral vision. That’s your heart telling you you’re gonna lose your vision before you die. Thanks again Mike, it’s 63 years old. I’m sure I owe my life to you.

Maintenance day today. Mines just shy of 3,500 miles. Just got new tires, discs, brakes, suspension serviced, chain & sprockets (cassette) newer seat post, seat, pedals, grips, I’ve  spent some cheese on it but it’s a drop in the bucket compared to racing moto 2 x a month. I ride it 3-4 times a week so the $ spent goes a long way. Plus theoretically it’s good for me. Not too sure about the huevos rancheros and hashbrowns after the morning rides and beers after the afternoon rides, but that was gonna happen anyway so it has to help 😀.  You’re going to love it. We (5-6 of us) try to start the week off with a “On Any Monday” morning ride. I have it permanently inked on my schedule every week. “Sorry Monday morning is booked already” lol  My outside work area

I've had my battery die twice on me, I don't ride nearly as far or long as you do. Not gonna lie I'll use trail for level transitions but besides that mines in boost mode. It'll go 18-20 ish miles depending on how much climbing there is. Looking at my strava the majority of our rides are usually an hour and 15 minutes + or -,  2,000-2.500 feet and average speed around 10 mph. So for me the battery life is fine.  But I 100% agree I wish once the battery dies it would freewheel without the pedals turning the motor, and just turn into a 50lb analog bike. I don't know if they make that but it would be a great feature.

Glad we left the MXoN last year and went up and saw her. At 96 She was still sharp as a tack but mobility was challenging

I have no idea how these things are configured, I don't even own an analog bike. I have a unicyle. 😄

But it seems like a lock-out clutch of some sort would be a simple solution, but I guess you'd be adding weight.

When I was 20, I successfully rode it out of the back of a 1975 Chevy truck.

That was something back then. Now guys are doing insane things that I would have never imagined possible.

Still thinking about it Lumpy ? We had seven of us on the “On Any Monday” am trail ride this week. It’s like the senior center for old dirt bikers 😂

We just rolled into SW Michigan by Red Bud and the $3000 silver one we were going to grab must have sold this weekend.

Our local Charlotte dealer is getting 2 of the $4000 2027 in for us to test ride.

The hot ticket is going to be the new integrated motor + transmission that Avinox is building. They have a gearbox built in, so no need for a deraileur hanging off the frame. Those bikes will probably run a belt drive system.

I think thats the belt design they now call automatic where it matches your pedal cadence by changing gears for you.

I have no regrets on the Gas Gas I got in June. Granted, it’s less of an ‘urban’ bike, but the rear suspension has a lockout that works well for paved bike trails. You can still switch the suspension back ‘on’ if you are on dirt or rougher surfaces than smooth pavement.

Brand new at just about $2K sure seemed like a bargain compared to what used ones are being listed at around here.

That's a great deal for that bike.

I love my alloy specialized S3 E bike. It's amazing the difference they make at my age.
