I always liked, and felt a bit sorry for Mike for having been controlled by his father. He always seems like someone who wants to please, and to be friends. I see it in Ricky and Cianciarullo, too. Similar backgrounds.
How would Mike feel if I went into his shed? He'd be totally cool if I took something as long as it was worth less than $11?

A lot of speculation on all sides here. A lot of conflicting opinions can be true at the same time. It was a spur of the moment bad decision on Mike's part. 2 actually. Dont "borrow " something from someone you aren't friendly with without asking, and for sure return it. Don' make excuses why you didn't. Had he asked or put it back the next morning, probably a different outcome...

Was it a delapited shed with junk all over, or a shed in which he had to open a door and go inside to get it? Was he freinds with this person? It would matter to me. If i had a net sitting against my garage, there are several neighbors that i would have no problems with them helping themselves without asking. I also have several neighbors that I would feel very different about if they opened up my shed a took even a $5. bucket without asking. Still wouldn't have them arrested, but I would feel uneasy and need to have a talk with them. Now imagine a single old lady that has safety insecurities. It changes a bit.
It was an innocent mistake that spiraled out of control. Everyone will get over it...

Mike is in Rhode Island today and tomorrow doing a training camp @ ButtonwoodsMX. I am not there but live nearby and saw it on FB. Doug Henry was recently there as well. Big scores for a state that has no public dirtbike areas, other than this one MX track and a world championship hosting trials site.
There's so much to scratch your head about regarding this situation, including catching minnows with that net (which could be a metaphor for this thread, which provokes some head scratching it itself).
How do you think the police knew it was Mike Alessi?
Funny you mention I think doug henry also got arrested for something completely dumb one time. Changing clothes or something.

Great post. I agree. Mike is around my age so I always kept an eye on his amateur career. Somehow the 13 year old me ended up on the Alessi email list and one Christmas they mailed out dozens of race used jerseys from Loretta Lynn’s over the years! Tony is a good guy deep down I believe he just can’t see his own flaws. I remember reading an interview back then Mike said he wasn’t allowed to have ANY posters on his walls, his dad said even one poster could distract his focus from racing. So when I hear Steve Matthes constantly shit on Mike for displaying trophy’s, photos, and memorabilia at his house, I always think back to that interview. Mike was never able to be a kid. And he should be damn proud of his career, if your going to be 2nd in championships, not much better talent to lose to being Stewart, Villopoto, Reed, and Dungey. Most importantly Mike is healthy and has a great family. I feel like if Mike raced in this day and age he would’ve been embraced. His era was “2nd place was first loser” which I never liked. Now we see guys like Barcia, Malcom, Plessinger having so much fun riding and getting respect for Top 10’s. I still have the Alessi jersey and Christmas card they sent me! I can’t believe it survived all my moves!

I’ve known Tony since I was in eighth grade, he’s always been a super intense person who was hard on himself when he didn’t achieve his goals, and he brought that intensity into his relationships with the boys. Overall, he is a really good person, but like every person, he has flaws.

Huge thanks to legend Mike Alessi for coming through Buttonwoods Motocross and doing a training camp and sharing wisdom from years of racing at the top level. This man is a complete gem of a human and was railroaded online over a borrowed fishing net from a neighbor and a completely bogus arrest. We wish him the best and stay tuned for another training camp coming soon
So they arrested him with a big threatening show of pomp and circumstance and then kicked him out the back door quietly with no jail records, other than ominous arrest charges.

It was a local arrest report, with charges listed and a booking photo. If the charges did get dropped, then it won't show up. Happens ALL THE TIME.

I did. I agree that I needed to calm down a bit. Even though I felt I was right, I went overboard a little. “Forest for the trees”. I had posted earlier in this thread that Alessi was still in custody, and then I checked back and he wasn’t, so I deleted it.
I still feel that they went way outside the scope of reasonable assessment of charges on the arrest, almost at the behest of the raging rigid neighbor.

It looks like once the DA's office read the arrest report they said no thanks.
