Anyone been watching the WWll series on the History Channel narrated by Tom Hanks? If so any thoughts on it? I’ve personally learned a lot about it following it each week.

Hahahaha!!! But I digress…I have been watching and in typical History Channel fashion, VERY well done!
I was a history major in school (w/focus on world history since 1900) and have very much enjoyed the series and Tom Hanks work narrating!
If NOT for programs like this one and other efforts by History, Discovery, learning channel etc, I probably wouldn’t even bother to turn on the idiot box we know as TV these days!
(Hell its gotten SO bad recently, I can barely even stand to watch moto anymore, with the terrible production value, crummy commentating etc!)

For me , I never fully appreciated the ambition, brutality of Hitler and the nazis as well as the brain washing of the German citizens by Hitler. And the overall scope of the war.

Yes, I have been watching it the last few weeks and I was actually gonna make a post about it when I started watching it as well.
I learned a lot more watching this than I ever did in school and the brutality of hitler was insane.
The video of footage is very good, and the cameraman were very brave to get the excellent footage they did even though it is very astonishing and sad......

Another thing that struck me was how Japan thought the US would fold after their attack on Pearl Harbor. When we didn’t , that miscalculation was huge and the physical size of Japan and lack of resources to produce food and weaponry on a large scale seemed like no insight on the ramifications of fighting larger nations.
At the time, the majority of Russian were Christian though. A huge number also died from the famine caused by Stalin and his collectivist farming bullshit. Communism in action.

Being in the war. I heard 3 weeks ago that we surrendered to Japan after the biggest battle in the Philippines . My American grandpa bragged about all the women he had ovr there. They had to invent a condom it got out of control so bad. Biggest pipeline co had a lot of ww2 men , they all talked about having a lot of women.
Japan was in a ‘go for broke’ situation, at least as far as their ambitions in Asia. They had no real delusions of conquering the United States, they were just hoping to keep the US from being able to maintain resource embargoes and project force in Southeast Asia.
They might have succeeded except for just the 2 big events that really kept their strategy from working. The US carriers not being in Pearl Harbor was a massive blow to their strategy, and the loss of so many of their own carriers at Midway completely flipped their script and they actually became the victim in their own plan.
After Midway, the result was inevitable. It was just a matter of how many people would die before the US was knocking on Tokyo’s door.
What’s surprising is the Battle of Midway was barely 6 months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Allied forces spent the next 2.5 years chasing a formidable Japanese military across the Pacific.

I'm digging it. I also just finished "WW2 Week by Week" on Youtube, which was fantastic and I can't suggest it enough. Episode 1
312 episodes including a Pearl Harbor and D-Day special. The D-Day one was incredible, they went hour by hour. Indy and his team are awesome. It really highlights the general shit-showness of war at a command level and how it almost seems like a game of "who can get lucky and fuck up the least". Also it solidified General Bill Slim as imo the most brilliant General of the war, both as a soldier's general, a logistician, and a tactician.
The channel also has a week by week on World War 1 and a very detailed series on the inter-years (Weimar Republic) which is very important to understand how Hitler came into power and other geopolitical movements that set the stage for the 2nd World War.
I'll always check out Hanks stuff. Band of Brothers is probably my most watched TV show throughout my life. I really want to visit Bastogne someday. I've already checked the 5 beaches, Carentan, St. Mere Eglise (not an Easy Co. Operation but still), The Eagles Nest, and Dachau.
Not sure if it’s streaming but “Piece of Cake” is a terrific period piece about a Spitfire squadron before and during the Battle of Britain. Fantastic flight sequences and story lines about the participants lives outside the war.

Yeah, that’s why it was a matter of how many people were going to need to die. Japan couldn’t do anything substantial offensively against the US, especially the mainland, but they were willing to throw their troops to the meat grinder on every island in the Pacific even if they couldn’t keep them supplied with the basics or ammunition. The resource problems that they had before Pearl Harbor may have ‘slightly’ improved for a few months, but after Midway they were on the fast track to resource starvation again.

Russia was a largely peasant, agrarian society and slowly industrialized after 1917. Its society was accustomed to strict monarchies, so moving under a communist dictatorship was more of the same shit, just a different day. Except of course for a horrifically brutal WWII.

Author is Derek Robinson. He wrote about 10 WW1 and WW2 avaiation books, all OUTSTANDING.

Go dig a little and find out how Hanks is viewed by WW2 veterans, including the men from BoB. Half of that series is Hollywood BS. Fucken Hanks slandered many of them, including Ronald Spears.

This is a direct copy of a much better a BBC production from the 1970s "The World At War". That is full of interviews with actual WW2 people -- not "podcasters" and millennial female college "historians" -- from Generals to privates, and support services etc. 'Bomber' Harris, for instance, and Albert Speer, Montgomery, etc.

Im sure you’ve probably seen it but they did a series on WW1 in the 1960s which is just as good called the Great War. Full of interviews with men who were actually there.
They are both probably the best series about both wars, especially the British experience on the western front in the Great War. You can find all 26 episodes on YouTube.
