Prediction Time: Will LaLa qualify at Southwick?

Edited Date/Time 1 day ago

I know it’s 4 weeks away. I’m not claiming she scores points. However, considering that 250B gets a clean/smooth track for Q1, will she set a lap time fast enough to earn 36th or better?

She wouldn’t be the first woman to qualify for a gate. Jordan Jarvis did it in 2020 (COVID Summer) at WW Ranch as the 5th Alternate in Moto 2. Dorene Payne did it in 1983 in the 500 class (I couldn’t find any details of that qualifying result). Could LaLa be the first woman to legitimately qualify for a gate by ripping a fast lap?

Edit to add: Jordan Jarvis has actually done it multiple times but all of them were as an alternate.

Poll

Can LaLa make top 36 in qualifying?

We shouldn’t count “the 5th alternate in Moto 2”

I don’t think she will. But I hope I’m wrong.

Of all the bad tracks to try it on...that may be the worst choice.  Or the best.
Sand is just a different beast.  At least Southwick isn't a really deep sand track like the Euros have or the old Florida tracks that were just continuous 2 foot deep whoops lap after lap.

she'll be close on lap times,

at hangtown her best was slower than the field by almost 1sec iirc

at southwick...idk the locals blow the doors off factory bois,

i dont think she goes straight in, if anything LCQ and maybe shes a better racer than qualifier?

The local NESC guys steal most of the borderline  quali positions. Southwick is a hell hole and a very demanding track.

The asterisk is too bold for me to count Jarvis’ gate qualification. I think LaLa has a shot because she will be in the fastest session of the day on a smooth track. If she gets in a clean lap early I think she has a shot.

The others saying that locals “sneak in”…this is how they do it. I’m saying she is as fast as the sneaky locals.

Is this happening? First I’ve seen or heard of it. I honestly hope she does. Be pretty damn cool to have the first Brother/Sister to ever qualify together, maybe even the first to even try?

I like Lachlan, she's awesome but her high pitched voice has ya thinking that Wil Christen might be her mother 🤐

Where did she get her pro points? I don’t recall her racing any of the pro am races in the pro class.

I'd love to see her make it, but this right here is what makes me think she probably won't. Those local dudes who only show up for Southwick usually end up making guys who qualify for every round look silly.

She will be in B practice where the track is smooth, so likely will make it IMO

Fingers crossed she makes it. I don’t think it’s super likely but ultimately this is the way it should be done in Motorsports. MotoAmerica is doing it right now with Kayla Yaakov. I don’t think LaLa will see the same success but this should only elevate female participation in the sport.

Southwick is a unique track, and yes with the way it breaks in through each qualifying session, there could be a 2011 Mike Sottile situation (local who qualified P1 through 450 C or B group because not only was the track completely fresh, but after that session, Hurricane Irene arrived and rained on EVERYBODY's parade).

But barring that type of scenario, she would either need to be a sand specialist (no idea if she is or isn't), or already be matching 250 qualifying times, which I'm sorry to say, she is not currently doing.

At both Hangtown and Thunder Valley, she would have qualified around 56th.

All for it though. Go for it! Awesome opportunity and experience and she will only get faster with each attempt.

They been continuously trucking in more sand, it gets rough and whooped out plenty….its still a sand track….

Dave 3.0 seems like he is intimately familiar with Southwick.

Yaakov is legit fast , i am amazed that she is blowing the doors off Darryn Binder, who actually made it to MotoGP , which shows how fast she is.

Its easier in Road Racing than MX , but taking a win at Daytona in any class is a big deal.

LaLa will struggle i think, Lotte Van Drunen rides a few sand GP's but only when there is no WMX or EMX, i dont think she has had to qualify for MX2.

All the girls rip, and they race hard, LL races are some of the best .

Where did she get her pro points? I don’t recall her racing any of the pro am races in the pro class.

Instead of downvoting me could someone tell me where she got her pro card from? I’m honestly curious.

Jordan Jarvis raced High Point one year, I think  2019. She finished in the upper 30s

Lachlan has her AMA Pro License. She, like all the WMX competitors, is subject to these requirements to obtain one: https://racewmx.com/wmx-eligibility-requirements

It's a lot like the AMA Pro Racing requirements from before the "Road to Supercross" and current Pro Card regulations came about for men. Since there are no MX combines or SX Futures races for women to compete in, they have their own separate qualification protocols.

From the MX Sports website regarding pro license eligibility:

"In addition, AMA Pro Racing may issue a license to any rider who does not meet the above criteria if it determines, in its sole discretion, that a rider has adequate competition experience consistent with that found at AMA Pro-Am sanctioned events. To be considered under this criterion, a rider must submit the following:

A Race Resume indicating all “A”, Expert and/or Pro-Am level race results within the past 18 months. Results for “B” or “C” classes will not be considered. A minimum of five race results is required, AND

At least one Letter of Reference (with contact information) from an AMA national or district race official, a recognized industry representative or a certified USMCA (United States Motorcycle Coaches Association) instructor who is personally familiar with the race qualifications of the applicant and who can attest to the skill requirements of the applicant for a professional motocross license."

Pretty sure WMX qualifies as "A" expert, and I'm sure she had no trouble getting the letter

Only the 1974 version of Southwick.🙂
But I am familiar with how sand tracks can bring out the locals that know how to go fast on those tracks.  It happens every year at Southwick and it used to happen every year at St. Pete when it had the final National.Southwick 1974

I’m familiar with the system. She is racing the full pro class but hasn’t raced any A level races to obtain those points.

Actually it doesn’t. You can race wmx professionally and still race B class.

I guess they are gonna do the exception. I don’t agree with the exception for USA based riders.
