Some more bits on Jett's ankle recovery. Unfortunately, and as expected, his recovery won't be measured in weeks but months and years before he gets anywhere close to being truly comfortable again, if ever.

For context: his ankle is stuck at neutral, which is basically zero degrees of dorsiflexion (the ability to pull your toes towards your shin). To walk properly you need 10-15 degrees. To run you need 25 degrees. A normal ankle range of motion sits around 40 degrees. Jett has ZERO!

How the fuck he did what he did at Pala is beyond me.

Crazy to think that an ankle injury could change the course of his career.  I hope somehow things change or he adapts.  Watching the dude has been one of the coolest things I’ve witnessed in our sport

How he didn't loop out at Pala on that staircase jump. Normally you would tap the rear brake….

Kid did an awesome job with 1 and a bit legs.

Almost qualified Q1 too!

i have my right ankle fused & have virtually 0 up & down mobility. It's much better now than it was when i was trying to ride with plates & screws. i had mobility but it felt very painful a lot. Walking downhill or down stairs was the worst, like Jett getting off the podium.

I ride now more than ever. it's coming up on 5 years since my fusion.

I don’t think that decision was injury related.

HRC should start looking at club and Max Vohland's hand brake. It would probably take some pressure off of Jett's ankle.

Curious how long you were down for after your fusion? I will most likely need both of mine fused in the near future and it scares me a bit

You might want to look into ankle replacement. I had mine replaced 3 months ago and so far it's working very well. For years I was told I needed a fusion but I did not want to go that route.

I’ve watched Jett ride in person numerous times and it’s poetry in motion and find this to be a shitty situation for him and us as fans.
Unfortunately, this is why you can’t crown a guy as the next king or the goat before he’s actually accomplished it. Just my opinion of course. I’d love to see him surpass all of them.

Cmon Jett just make it to round 4 and get those two weeks off 🤞

Dorsiflexion and eccentric loading while at/near the end range of it is SO damn important. I can't imagine having nothing.

I bet that rehab is painful as hell

After my fusion until I rode was about 5 months. I want to say It was 12 weeks non weight bearing. Then 4 weeks of transitioning to weight bearing. It was tough.

After my first break they put in 12-13 screws & a plate & I was back on the back in 13 1/2 weeks so around 3 1/2 months. 8 weeks non weight bearing

Yeah he could definitely look at that. Doctor told me I would wear a replacement out if I rode & raced on it. Do you still ride & race on it at a high level? Couple factors I would consider is probably age then activity level. Definitely ask the doctor.

A fusion is way less risk of complications or errors. I mean yeah I lost some mobility but I’m very active & people are usually shocked to hear my ankle is fused with how I appear.

My dad had his ankle replaced & so did one of my best friends & they both have constant issues. 3 months still seems early but keep us posted in a year or so on how that is doing.  I’d be curious.

I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way to go but I do think it’s situational.

There was a video of the boys after the race just in shorts, and you can see how much muscle he has lost in that leg. Pretty incredible what he is able to do on the bike still.

Can someone ran an AI on the interview to see if they say the word "like" more than they said "I", "and" & "the" ?

Thats the really shitty part. If we dont get to see him reach the same potential he was going to reach its going to be so unfortunate

The problem Jett would have is that if his talus can’t glide back in the ankle joint to allow dorsiflexion then he would not be able to load his calves and soleus at end range. Need the actual joint to work first before you can stretch soft tissue and lengthen.

That makes sense, thank you for the clarification on that! What a gnarly little injury.

If you don't mind my asking, who did your ankle replacement? I have a shot ankle but isn't terribly debilitating like my knee was. I recall reading somewhere that it wasn't good for 200 lb. + people or impact type activity.
