If I had a Time Machine back to 1982 I’d come back with this

I imported a nice Honda Acty a few years ago for a fun neighborhood vehicle and around town. Pretty solid up to about 45 MPH. And had 4WD, manual transmission, AC, and was right hand drive.

If ya think about it, if we use these as our commuter/errand runners/goin to the local track rig…and if you’ve got good electric rates (I’m guessing you do)…well…less is more in that sense when it comes to “operating costs” stand point. Less drivetrain is less weight and less motors on electric vehicles.

Funny stuff: our electrics/hybrids…we get virtually “no brake wear”; because, regen does most of the braking. Which is nice! I traded in the wife’s hybrid with almost 70k mile on it…stock brakes…over 50% of the brake material was on it! The brakes on the Mach E are still damn near new at 10K! My F150:Hybrid has just about 50k miles and the brakes are looking great.

Btw, trying to make the battery last or “go far” is kinda like a game you get caught up in. Long downhills are your friend again…like when you were a kid on your bike or skateboard 🤣

Original brake pads and battery pack 290k miles on 2012 Camry Hybrid! Never been in for a repair. The long game is how you get value out the hybrid premium pricing.

In reality I don't need a time machine, I need $31,000'.  That's what the truck in the picture recently sold for. The chances of me getting a time machine or spending 31K on a 44 year old mini truck are about the same  😐😄 Too bad Toyota didn't just keep pumping those out like the CG160 in the other thread..

I feel the same about my 2000 Tundra that just past smog again with 366,097 miles.

I was kicking around the idea of just buying a new Maverick, but Whole Lee Sheet, 39k for an XLT and 42k+ for a Lariat trim? Thought they were supposed to be affordable. 😆

Now try pricing out a half-ton. Or even a goddamned Ranger, Colorado, or Taco.

That's why I was entertaining the idea of a Maverick. 😊 I have been window shopping for 3 months now and to be honest, I have zero desire to pull the trigger on anything.

Maybe the restored blue 92' for 31K isn't so bad.  New truck ?     Or that truck, 10K in your pocket, and way more fun.... hhmmm.... 🤔

I’ve had this truck 22 years! My dad bought it new in 83 and I bought it from him when I was in high school.

I picked up a XL AWD with a tow package/360 copilot/mats and a life time drive train warranty form Ford for 27,800. 4600 miles and average mpg is 40.6 so far.

Same boat, man. Even used is insane. People apparently are doing better than I am or are oblivious to the risk of financial ruin or both I guess.

Is mpg all that matters these days?   That maverick is useless for hauling anything. At that price you can spend an extra 10k and have a full size. I think Ram right now has 0%apr

I'd say there are a lot of 84-96 month loans, which is just lunacy. I also think we are about a year out from a massive wave of repo's or voluntary relinquishments on top of the high numbers the industry is already seeing.

For some it's mpg, for me it's something easier to run errands and go to the track in. I'm kinda tired of driving a big ass truck around for everyday things, let alone loading and unloading my shit at the track. When I sit down and do the math, I might need more than the Maverick can do maybe 4 times a year, and for those times I can just rent a 3/4 ton from Enterprise for 50% off as my step-son is a M.I.T. here in town.

My wife says to just go buy the 2500 Denali I really want, but If I could get a nicely appointed Maverick for a third of the price and just spend $200 a week to rent a bigger truck when needed, it makes far great financial sense to me personally.

have you driven 1? Do you like front wheel drive cars with transverse mounted engine? I wanted another mini truck several years ago, heard Maverick was coming and ordered 1st 1 in our area in 2022. Got the XL with Turbo + All wheel drive + tow package for $25.5 OTD. Bought it as a place holder for the New Ranger that was coming. I hoped the Torque Steer from FWD was fixed like they claimed. It wasn't. When driving if you were turning when the turbo kicked in it would pull steering wheel hard to the side and had to let off gas to self-correct. Turbo was fun in straight line, but MPG went to shit. The new Ranger hit and I wanted Supercab style with longer bed like previous version- but not offered. Found the equivalent in the Nissan 2024 King Cab with 6' bed with non-turbo V6 and been loving it for almost 3 years now.

I got it not just because of mpg, but because it's the perfect tool for what I'm using it for. The only thing I haul is dirt bikes, bicycles, music gear, and the occasional small amount of construction supplies. I despise driving big, bulky, boats of vehicles. I like quick zippy handling, and having the feeling of being in complete control of the vehicle. I won't be hauling anything heavy, so why spend double the amount and enjoy driving it less, while spending a shitload in gas?

They WERE affordable, and affordable is popular  so demand is making them less affordable unfortunately. I paid $27k for my moderately spec'd xlt plus my 2016 Mazda CX5 last year. Considering average trade value it probably came out to around $35k otd for the msrp of around $34,500.

For what its worth 2 weeks ago I saw 3 ram 700 driving around chicago and again a couple days later on the  I-55 in morning rush hour. Couldn't get a photo both times bit seems like they may be coming soon. So another option soonish maybe.

Its a good possibility. Repos went sky high 22-23. Calmed down a touch late 24 and most of 25. But I know part of it is because like you said people taking out 80+ month loans. Even at 3% a 20k vehicle is 2200 in intrest over the life of the loan roght now I think a 690 score is getting you a 5-6% rate. So 4800 over the term on only 20k otd

That looks awesome.

The late 70's Toyota's but especially  the Datsuns make great little trucks to lower.  My favorite however is the Chevy luv followed by the first gen S-10.

Well done on yours I say. Very CLEAN.

Any time I see an 01 XR I have to get a close look at the flywheel cover for a deep gouge where my brother ran into me, since my 01 XR80 got stolen. Lucky for you you've got a 100 😉
