I’m looking for someone(s) who has spent time in the SG12 and gone to the new 22. I wore SG10’s for years, and went to the 12 when they were discontinued. I loved the 10’s…. Unfortunately the 12 just feels rock hard inside, like I’m walking on concrete and I’m hoping the 22 has been changed to provide a little more comfort. Last year I bought Tech 7’s, absolutely the most comfortable boot I’ve ever worn but honestly they are down right scary to wear in the woods. Protection is minimal, last weekend I made a mistake and the foot peg hit me in the Achilles area and it HURT. I stopped, looked at the boot, and realized there is absolutely NOTHING for protection back there. The tech 7’s have to go, and Im not interested in tech 10’s.

I did , do not like the 22's , pinch , feet go numb , have tried a bunch of stuff and ended up going back to SG12's . The only thing i can think of is the 22's are to small but I'm not ready to try another pair until i can't get 12's anymore
I wore 12’s for years, basically since they came out, and 10s prior to that. They were always comfortable and broke in very quickly…until my most recent set of 12’s. I tried to wear them hoping they’d become comfortable but they never did. Like you, the soles felt rock hard to me and I couldn’t feel the rear brake at all. They also squeezed the tops of my feet so badly that I’d have to remove them between practices/motos, which I’ve never had to do.
I got a set of 22’s and love them so far.
I wore SG12s for years and switched to SG22’s maybe three years ago. I love the fit and feel of them. The biggest difference is the smaller toe box which feels great for moto. The bigger and rounder toe of the SG12 seems like it might be more protective of your toes in rough off-road conditions, but I haven’t noticed it.
Do you feel like the 22s are wider on the front-of-foot area than the 12s?

I have hundreds of hours in SG12s across many different pairs. Rode a bunch in the SG-22s (and many other boots). Here is a direct comparison:
Hope that helps.

I switched from SG12 to SG22 last year. The boots are comfortable and as others mentioned, the smaller toe box (externally smaller) is nice and my wide size 10 feet don't feel cramped like some other brands of boots.
So far the SG22 have been as durable as any other pair of Gaerne boots I've owned.
The SG22 revealed to me that the shifter on my GasGas (and all Austrian 350Fs) is longer than my Japanese bikes.
I'm actually sitting at the desk working on a CAD model for a shifter...
for those saying the toe box is smaller for sg22… is it the same internally or tighter for wide feet than sg12?
I can wear a smaller size in an SG22 than an SG12 so for me the toe box has more room for the outside of my foot in the SG22. My little toe still rubs the side of the boot though (but only on one foot) which is annoying. I never bought or rode in an SG12 because they just didn't fit me. I like how well the SG22 grip the pegs compared to the Sidi crossairs I usually wear. Not sure about SG12 but the 22 let in water about as bad as the previous gen tech 7. I would tell you to try Sidi the crossair/crossair x because they are the most comfortable boot for me, but they are not exactly cushy inside.
To me the 22 is roomier inside than the current 12’s, but not as roomy as the older generation of 12’s. I have a 10-15 yr old set of 12’s still and they are definitely larger in the toe area, but the boot is also much larger externally than either the new 12 or 22.
The 22 just feels less bulky against the shifter/top of foot to me.
I have super wide feet with bunions…Sg22 is the only boot I can wear w/out modifications…wider internally at toe box…...for me at least…
Great video, but my biggest complaint wasn’t addressed. The sg12 feels like concrete on the bottom of my feet, in your opinion is the 22 any better?
I run SG 12`s for nearly 15 years now and tested the SG 22 last year, but went back to SG 12 again because I didn`t like the weight of the SG 22`s...
You guys keep taking about SG22’s are going to cost me some money just to try a pair.
I went from SG10's to the 22 Enduro boots. Incredible. I didnt want to spend the $ for the 22's but at the time there was a heck of a sale going on (like 20% from Gaerne and stacked 15% from the dealer). I tried on 12's and then for kicks the 22's and the 22's were a level beyond the 12's. I couldnt buy 12's after walking in the 22's. Going on season 3 and still kicking ass and waterproof. Dont let the goretex scare you, its just the thing material liner, not insulated+goretex.
how did the padding under your feet feel? adequate or hard as a rock?
I would say adequate I guess. I never felt anything under my feet that was noteworthy compared to any other boot. What I did feel was how great the boot felt around my ankle. It was completely conformed memory foam with no pressure points felt anywhere. I cant imagine anyone would would think about the insole padding being any different than other boots. Was the pair you tried missing the insole?
ive never tried on a pair of 22's but the 12's even with the insole were terrible in that aspect
I love the SG 12's so much, that I haven't considered any other boot. But might look into a pair of SG 22 some day, great info in this thread.

I've ridden in sg10's then 12's now 22's. Only thing I noticed was a pinching spot on the lateral ankle bone that went away after a few rides. Fit seems to be similar to the 12's but tighter than the 10's, and as others have said the outside toe of the boot is smaller.
I had a few wonky pairs of 12's that I returned for a different pair that felt fine, as long as you can try them on and return a pair if needed should be good.
It's wider than the SG12, and uses a different attachment method for the welt sole. It is less dome shaped, and the plastics at the perimeter of the forefoot are more vertical than sloped. That is what they mean by the "3D toebox". It accommodates wide feet better than the SG12. Here's a pic:

Sorry, should have been more specific. Any welt sole boot, including of course the 12s and the 22s, will not feel as cushy under the foot as a bonded PU sole boot like a Tech 7. They all have roughly the same construction, which you can see in this SG-12 cutaway:
For reference I have cut open an SG-10, same as you had, and the construction was exactly the same.
I personally don't notice it when walking on dirt or standing on pegs, nor have any of the people I have worked with to pick boots. It is noticeable on concrete, etc., but that isn't how they are used. FWIW they (welt soles) do have a little less peg feedback, but also wear better. More importantly, they don't do this:
(BTW, the new Tech 7 is much stiffer - and better IMO - than the above version)
I have violently smashed my foot in between rocks, stumps, etc and the frame, to the point of lifting the wheel off the ground and smashing the toe cap. Often. OTOH don't have to look hard to find anecdotes of bonded sole boot issues when getting a frontal impact. Myself, I appreciate that.
Also, the heel of the footbed in the SG-12s and SG-22s is fairly padded under the heel, which should have alleviated your feeling. Not a good idea to pad under the toe, it reduces feedback.
I will say this: the SG-12s have a bit of a "dead" feel to them. People sometimes describe them as stiff, but I don't think that is accurate, as the hinge flexes really well. The SG-22 is much more active, lively, and easy to flex.
Finally, I don't want to "sell" welt soles over bonded, just want to explain the difference. No product is perfect, all have strengths and weaknesses, trick is to identify and then prioritize them.

I agree with this statement.
Super old (maybe 10 years) SG12 had a very tall, very bulky toe box...
More recent SG12s (a few years) had a roomy, but less bulky toe box. I feel like I still had plenty of room.
SG22 that I bought about a year ago feel as roomy as my last pair of SG12. I rode them back to back and I prefer the 22.
My feet are wide at the ball of the toe. I always wanted to try SIDI boots, but they are narrow in comparison.
Aplinestars and Gaerne always fit my feet well.
I don't want the booties with the Tech 10 and I'm not sure I'd feel safe in the Tech 7.
For me, the SG12 always deteriorates at the ankle strap... This may be related to the shape of the two stroke Yamaha frames.
The new molded plastic for the SG22 seems like it will cure that issue and the upper will survive longer.
Not playing basketball in these things, the sole is there for protection and designed to be used standing on sharp footpegs taking in a ridiculous amount of force distributed over a tiny patch
EAmato, you may be able to go up a size in the SG-22 and put in a set of cushy work shoe insoles? You would need to be able to try on different pairs of the SG-22 and have a set of insoles with you to swap i9n/out and see if it could work for you. I'd make the effort , as the SG-22s are an awesome boot.
That's a solid suggestion.
A pair of thicker boot socks could also help if comfort is your issue.
Thanks everyone, I have decided to try the Leatt 5.5 this time. First impression, its a stiff but comfortable boot. Not as comfortable as the tech 7 but getter than the SG12. Plenty of hard plastic coverage which I like, looks and feels protective enough. Hoping to get on the bike with them this week.
