Handguards save lives (and points)

Edited Date/Time 4/4/2026 6:19pm

Joe Shmo and Nate Thrasher have both broken fingers recently thanks to the MX obsession with weight (or is it tradition?) over safety.

Hunter Lawrence wouldn't have wasted a lap and then Chuck-Norris-kicked his front brake clean if handguards had kept his lever pivot out of the dirt.

Thoughts, questions, concerns? How many seconds do bar-mounted windsails lose per lap?

It’s not just weight. Some guys just swear that can’t ride with them, others (more legit issue) could never get the levers where they want them with old style mounts (I’m in that group).

There’s a ton of good new options that solve the bar space issue, but as for the other guys, it’s like crossbars; some people just have their quirks.

Also lever companies pay big money for you to see that ARC or ASV logo..

Love handguards…. Stoaked to see Dudney running them. First thing I do to any bike. We race old school in NZ - standards and tape. You clip one of those fuckers with your inside hand and you know about it.

The entire gate of MXGP has them. Last year not having them cost Jo $500k. I don’t understand why no us pros run them, they have so much effort and dedication to their careers and title fights, to risk a hand injury when there is a simple and proven solution has always blown my mind.

The one time a year I don’t have them for whatever reason I’m literally shocked within a lap when roost hits my hands, lol I usually Like wtf is going on.

Add to that , that all modern gloves are absolute trash when it comes to protection, and it makes even less sense.

I have new Acerbis handguards, but don’t have enough room on the right side of my Twinwalls to install. They are cut down a little too. Relocate the start/stop switch? Other options?

yes thats what i ended up doing to fit hand guards. Its real weird when you stall for the first time and youre searching for the start switch

Or the handguard mount makes a fulcrum and snaps the lever or master mount..

Or the handguard mount bends/rotates, making it so the lever can't retract.

I’d never used hand guards till I bought a 2024 Beta 300 RX, it came with them.  I think they have a purpose.  This thread got me thinking, should add them to my KX450.  Going to flip my 23 Honda so will pass on it.

Are you on a KTM by chance?  You can use the factory mount for the XC/XCW models and bolt on whatever flags you want and they just mount to the master cylinders.

The Enduro Engineering perch mount are far and away the best handguard setup out there.

Vast majority of the GNCC teams run these and if they are sponsored by another brand its usually these mounts with that companies shields screwed to them.MalcolmLeatt-20.jpg.b84ebfbca88e4dace407b5f128ec0b52.jpg?VersionId=KYKltDFuJcCKVFzx9

With how hard Hunter's bike slammed into the ground I don't see how handguards would have helped

More weight on the front, wouldn’t have swapped

I used to run handguards because they looked cool & TP199 hand them.... Then as I got older, I realized how great it was not taking a rock on the knuckle.

Again, whatever most pros can do to ELIMINATE things that WOULD protect themselves, they will eliminate.

Good on Dudney!

If I owned a team... I would literally make the guys run hand guards and heel savers...

lol the little plastic handguards weren't going to save his lever or perch in that crash. Maybe full wrap arounds would, maybe, but no one is running full wraps in supercross...

That’s cool. Wish I knew that before buying the Acerbis. May need to order just for the mounts.
