Having been on this earth a very, very long time, I have gained some wisdom on a few things. This is one of them.
Regardles of anything, legal counsel advice is going to be given to anyone in such a position to say very, very little and to stay away from any details. It isn't a matter of guilt or innocence, it is just wise and accurate legal advice, regardless. He is apparently listening to that advice.
Why this approach ? An innocent person can, and historically have said the wrong things and incriminate themselves. It's a standard practice.

No, that is not at all what you respond with when the charge is assaulting a female. You would respond with " I would never choke or punch my wife, these were charges made by my wife in the heat of an argument that she later recanted. I will vigorously defend my character, I have never touched a women in anger" or something to that effect. I don't believe there are many instances where attacking a women would be considered an appropriate response. The fact that the neighbor called it in is pretty damning. If a female is aggressively attacking you, either physically (as long as she doesn't have a knife or gun) or verbally the only thing a guy can do is get the hell out of there until the psycho women chills. Extract yourself as soon as possible.

this thread needs to die, but there is a difference between justifying and analyzing. i think some are just trying to explain/understand the irregularity of his actions, and the inference drawn by some others as to the interlocutors' state of mind is unwarranted and perhaps stemming from the others' own respective unfortunate experiences. saying "i wonder if weed is a factor" does not mean one is minimizing the guy's agency, culpability, or responsibility. i'm the last one to ever trot out 'socioeconomic factors' and the like as a mitigation tactic, but having a gnarly motodad, and a diva wife (if true..) and and and and can help one understand the circumstances that led to these very poor decisions. everyone has to stare into the void at some point, and it's natural to wonder where this person or that person is similar to you or different.

I too have always believed if someone were truly innocent of something they would repeat it until they are blue in face. Not give statements saying they were sorry for their actions and the pain they have caused their wife and family. Guess I’ve been wrong all along.

You’re right, the judicial system does operate under a very high standard of proof, so much so that some cases don’t get prosecuted because the evidence, even though it’s real, isn’t sufficient.
