Your Dept Most definitely can have you on light duty   But it will be daily work not shift work .

Anyone had a hard time going back to work after an injury. My doctor will not clear me to work until May which is beyond my FMLA. All I had was a collar bone plate. I have 2 kids and things are getting tight in my house. I've already missed more than a month of work.

Not sure what industry you’re in, but have you approached your employer about some form of light duty assignment? It’s possible it might not pay the same as your normal role, but most workplaces have administrative tasks that pile up because everyone is too busy to get to them day in and day out. You might offer to pick up that stuff and if approved, your doc might be inclined to sign you off for that work which would buy you more time, keep accruing PTO, etc.

Most places will only give you light duty if you get hurt at work. If you get hurt on your own they want you 💯 so you don’t reinjure on the clock and then they are responsible for paying you

That might be true, but when you do get that call, you have to know that your team is fully capable. If you don't have confidence they'll be able to perform, you can't really do the job.

That said, I do think the length of time the doc put him off for seems excessive. I mean really excessive. Thing is, none of us know how he's healing, what the doc has done for followup, etc... In my case, My collarbone was fully healed in 6 weeks. It hurt for about 6 more weeks after I went back to work, but it was healed and I could do the job.

I will take a dude who rides motocross and has a broken collarbone over many of his colleagues who are medically cleared that I know nothing else about. Lot of XXL turnout gear getting sold.

I got hurt at a motocross track. One thing we all need to agree on.

We don't say where we got hurt. If you go to the ER say you fell down while fishing or anything but motocross because the insurance can go after the track. I intend to turn more laps at that track!

I hear you. I guess I got lucky when I had a Primary care Dr who was also a Sports Medicine specialist. He knew from Day 1 I was racing MX (VMX) when he took me as a patient. I was in UC system for HMO type care through employer and then Obamacare after retiring early. He never tried to get me to stop and steered me to the best Orthopedic Drs in system to deal with my injuries. The only Red line he had was he wouldn't sign off on TKA unless I stopped racing. I basically aged out and VMX was dying in SoCal so I was able to get both Carpal tunnels fixed and TKA the last year I had my plan and same Dr.

Hope things work out for you!

Firefighter Paramedic. I'm going to try and get him to let me sign a release of liability or go to another doctor.

Definitely see if light duty is an option, biggest perk of my union is any injury off duty I can still work my full hours on light duty. I assume you went private doctor vs work comp right? If you feel ready you can be a little more stern with your personal doctor vs work comp. Hope it all works out for you

Yep, if you were a chief you could have been back the next day. Type 4 arduous class has to be fully healed. On my department if you were injured on duty they would push to get you back on light duty, hurt on your own time, they might try to find you a spot. I swear some light duty assignments just looked like hall monitors. I did a navicular break and then plated and fused in my right foot. I was out of work for 5-1/2 months. We do have a couple programs you can pay into that will fill in pay if you run short of time. We had 50% and 75% sick time and the programs will pay to balance you out to your base pay. With all that it still sucked because I was missing the easily available overtime.

Good luck.

Interesting, my surgeon and PT didn't care if I was doing moto but I was retired when I had my TKR.

I was retired for 2 years when I had TKR, but I kept my same Primary care Dr for 22 years through several different plans. I 1st came to him after major Brain surgery and came out of it with best possible scenario. I figured that didn't take me out, so I'd buy a new RM250 to play with after quitting riding nearly 20 years earlier. Dr knew what I was doing. Snapped my Left ACL (not riding) and Dr referred me to a top Ortho surgeon for repair. 7 months after that I did a GP style race at Carlsbad raceway with no issues. Kept riding and got pulled into VMX around 2000. Had multiple more knee injuries and recovered and Dr never said stop. Also blew up my Right shoulder racing and again got a great surgeon to fix it. Eventually ran out of injection options to help my knees and asked Dr again about TKR and he agreed if I would stop racing- though just riding was OK with good braces. I agreed and had the knee fixed and still ride whenever I can with no issues.

Fuck the doc I was at work the next week or something idk.  We had to rebuild the openers on our grain drill and they weigh a ton so it wasn’t fun having to do that right out of surgery.  Dug up a hydrant to fix and replace it too.

Collarbone aches a lot but I haven’t really had much rest and I work I hit the weights I ride.  It should be pretty solid.

This why I always carry an accident injury policy. Maybe they can assign you to auditing gear and equipment for a few weeks?
