Ya that guy ran across the track right in front of cooper and Lawrence. Reminds me of the times track worker ran in front of JS7 on a rough rutted MX track and he crashed.

been saying it for years, but many parts of our sport at this level will only improve when a televised death occurs. Was it this year or last year when a worker was hauling ass across the sand section at the start of the race and almost got hit? How long till someone misses a triple and is killed by a bike landing on them? We all know this sport is dangerous but at the absolutely highest level, and having a flagger narrowly missing top level riders...it's only a matter of time.

Both Prado and Marchbanks were annoyed by being grabbed and touched by track crew last night as well.  Garrett said in an interview they kept grabbing him trying to roll him over (?) and he wanted to see how he was feeling and in the Prado replay after his crash he pulled away from track crew multiple times and they followed him around and grabbed him again

I swear some of them act like random spectators who just happened to be there and dont know what the fuck they should do. "yeye just grab him so he can walk better" oof

That incident was at Thunder Valley. While the guy shouldn't have been on or crossing the track,  it didn't cause Stewart to crash.

give it up already. people willing engage in dangerous activities and don't need nagging to "make it safer". Can't idiot proof life for everyone. Maybe you could take up a new cause like warning Tourons at Yellowstone not to play with Bison to get selfies or ignore clearly marked warnings not to go near boiling geysers and stay on walkways?

My wife, who doesn’t normally sit down and watch the races with me, even noticed that and said “what the heck is that flagger waving that flag for?”

Side note, she also got a kick out of the Deegster’s recreation of the Exorcist scene with his head spinning around so much.

Same section Tomac destroyed his shoulders, I believe. I remember the endless discussions in here over whether it caused James crash. James was unreal the start of that outdoor season and was never the same after that crash

the hell? Running into a flagger has NOTHING to do with not being a "tough guy in a tough sport". Yes people get hurt riding dirt bikes, but running into track crew who stupidly entered a hot track has NOTHING to do with the inherent risks of our sport, genius.

The amount of focus it takes to ride at JS7 speed through a rut that is like 200’ long and a track worker causes a quick lapse of focus…ya it would cause a crash potentially. It was even discussed back then.

Yeah...it seems like they need to have better meetings on the roles of EVERYONE down on the track for qualifiers and mains.  Every single person should be briefed and be capable of doing the job all night long. Man...we are six rounds in and it has been pretty sloppy.  I was at Houston and a tough block got knocked into the track at an angle.  Dude was standing RIGHT there and he never fixed it for the last four laps of one of the triple crown races.  He had plenty of safe time to straighten/re-position it.  It was an area they were jumping way to the right....right where the tough block got knocked out of place.  Could have been a bad crash if someone landed on it.

I posted in the race thread asking why they didn't have red cross flags going down both lanes. Thought it was strange to only have them on one side for a rider who was down between lanes.

Agree.

Does anyone know if the on track crew travels with the series or are they local labor? They don’t have much situational awareness or track knowledge, they look surprised by race events way too often.

That was not a flagger running across the track. Flaggers are explicitly not allowed to step on a hot track. If you step on a hot track, you will be asked to leave the premises and you will become a former flagger.

Dig Dugs (The guys with no flags that move Tuff Blocks or pick up bikes) travel with the series.

AMA Flaggers (The guys with yellow, blue, red cross and red flags) travel with the series.

Feld Flaggers (The guys with yellow flags only and also the guys who drag the mechanics blocks) are local.

I have done both Dig Dug (AMA Daytona) work and work as a flagger for Feld and the vast majority of flaggers for Feld are current racers. The Feld flaggers are very well trained and even though they are a local crew they will be doing it every year. There is so much that the average fan watching tv and commenting on Vital just doesn't understand about what is going on.

Idk James was still pretty dang good in 2014, I remember him coming into the ‘14 season looking lean and ready. He set the fastest times at A1 in ‘13 then tore his acl. I think James wouldn’t have a few more titles if he didn’t go sx only and stay on that Yamaha from ‘10 thru sx in ‘12. He left some of the table in those years imo and gave the Ryan’s too much confidence.

Anton made a very good video last year that covers it very well. The part that people wouldn't understand is what you are allowed or not allowed to do. Flaggers also have to maintain their position. You may see a guy and think he should move and be flagging but it was covered by another flagger. You want two flags going per incident and no more. When a bike goes off the track like the Reven Gordon incident last weekend doesn't need to be and shouldn't be flagged as there is no danger on the track. A Tuff Block could be on the track and it looks like it's easy for a flagger to grab it but they are not allowed to go on track to grab it.
