Bob was a great open class rider, very fast and just heading into his prime. If you look at who was in the open class in the early 80's, I am pretty comfortable saying Bob would have been a consistent top five at the nats. Very undramatic style on the bike; one of those guys who looked slow while going really fast.
Bob rode with an exacting style imo. The turns I thought were his strength in how quick and precise he was hitting his marks lap after lap. Much agreed with your post FTE.

No doubt! In fact, MXA called the 1981 Maico 490 the greatest open-class bike of all time. For sure, one bad ass machine that was ahead of its time and nice used ones fetch big $$$.

This guy says he can turn faster laps on his almost 30 year old Maico than his current CRF 450:

Bob was a badass and this picture was taken at the last National he ever rode. After this Nat at High Point the series took a break before resuming in (I think) New Orleans. On the way south, Bob and his cousin stopped in Texas to pick up some cash at a local purse race, along with Howerton and some of the other guys. It was there that Bob wadded up and broke his tib-fib, which ultimately cost him his leg...with the help of some seriously inept doctors in Texas and Oklahoma.

Great shot, Rita!
