This is the biggest advertisement for the tech air there could possibly be. He may be paralyzed or dead without it. To see he only has 1 small break on a wing in his back bone is insane. Feld/AMA need to tell the other companies they have 2 years to create these and then theyre mandatory. If they dont the rider can wear a competitors since its under the jersey. Has to happen, this sport is too damn dangerous.

No he wouldn’t be. Thats almost never how paralysis or death come from it’s almost always compression like landing on your head which Barcia basically did but a vest isn’t going to help with that. But I bet it certainly helped with some more additional smaller injuries that would have made recover that much harder.

That would be a thought that it could have helped if it prevented his neck from compressing.

Not matter what it was good to see him avoid major and or life altering injury.

I don’t believe it does but even if it did there’s no way it would help, there’s an extreme amount of force required to create an injury like that way more than an inflatable could prevent.

That vest is awesome for all the torso injuries these guys get commonly like ribs, sternum, and maybe even internal stuff. Crazy to think we saw a at best case scenario a career ending crash to him probably racing again this year.

Yes, the airbag also inflates up to the helmet to stabilize it and add neck support.

You cannot wear a neck brace with the airbags as they will interfere with neck support function upon inflation.

I've got a TechAir MX on order from my dealer as soon as they can sell them. Have to get training 1st before they can stock them js what I was told. I'm bigger than average, so if the 2X TA doesn't fit, I will get the Klim Ai-1 (it is available in a 3X). I prefer the A-Stars as it deploys down the shoulder while the Klim doesn't.

The Tech Air MX does inflate below the helmet all the way around. You can’t wear a neck brace with it because it becomes a neck brace. I can’t say just how much it limits compression, but it might be some.

I don’t see how it would inflate anymore than just around the shoulders, even if it did it I don’t know how effective it would really be against a compression force like that.

WTF. How?!

I too feared the worst when opening this thread. As the video started I kept waiting for the shopping list of injuries. It never came. This is incredible.

I was actually thinking about this too after the crash. The neck still needs protection so what if you have a flat collar around your neck that would inflate during a crash and create a neck brace to stabilize the helmet. This along with the tech air would be amazing. Apparently alpinestars and other companies are working on this too. We know riders hate neck braces, but if it was out of the way until it was needed I bet theyd wear one. Very cool to see how safety tech is advancing, its badly needed!

^^^ there is a before and after deployment. The whole thing inflates up. Again, I’m not saying it absolutely helps compression, just that it’s plausible that it helps.

Incredible update after that crash. Hopefully this convinces other top riders to seriously consider the air bag.

Thanks. It certainly doesn’t seem like it would hurt and anything helps.

I love how all you freaking morons have to argue about every single fucking thing. Some of you all need to go outside and play to get rid of all the bullshit stuck between your ears.

Anyhow…JB51 is one hell of a tuff man.

Edit: Oh, just saw the video posted above here, with the neck thing i was just asking! Really interesting.

honest question: if COSTS were not the problem, what else should a sport like MX have avaliable as safety options? Something for the neck, like a Hans device for bike racing, idk. Does MotoGP has some stuff that could be brought as an option to MX/SX? Im not aware of that aspect of the sport tbf

Honestly, air bags are the big tech coming from MotoGP. They also have recently added impact sensors to helmets. I think it’s still just for data collection.

That would be interesting, or scary, data for Justin’s crash. I hope they take a good look at his helmet and can learn from this.

Bam is a tough somebody. I'm glad he is relatively OK. I'm more glad that he is wise enough to know where it is that his help comes from.

Sometimes, when a rider has an absolutely horrific crash but then posts an update like JBs, I'm awestruck. I seriously was worried he could've potentially been fully paralyzed, it looked that brutal. So glad to see that he's already himself again and back home.

Such a relief that he is ok.  I couldn't believe  his update video when I saw it. I thought it must have been an old video - not one from today.

Potentially unpopular thought  - what if they made a rule allowing doubles only the first lap?  Give them one lap to spread out a bit before they can start tripling in the second and future laps?

So happy he’s going to be ok.  It’s more proof these dudes are not mere mortals.

One race in. 3 factory guys out. That's enough for me to say changes are needed. I have no real answers.

Who is the third? Barcia, Malcolm, and who else?

Everyone’s already said it but so thankful Barcia’s as tough as he is, was genuinely scared for him but he looks unbelievably good for someone who just got kicked off a 75 foot triple straight to his crown. Walking living legend

That's actually not a bad idea.  Doesn't cost anything to implement and could improve safety without having to dumb down the track.

Make it a uniform 1 or 2 position penalty for tripling on the first lap.

One potential  downside could be guys making contact while aggressively scrubbing the doubles while running 4 wide on the opening lap.

Maybe design it so there's a 180 then a sand section and maybe a rythm section before the first triple.

Unpopular opinion, the jumps are something for them to do between the time they're racing.  Race, race ...race.... go over the triple, take a breath, pull a tearoff, look around, don't crash, then land and start racing again.

😄yes I'm kidding, sort of. 😬

I know I know.... go to bed boomer.

Jacuzzi:30.   Glad he's ok that was a scary one.

Huge relief, but how is that even possible?! I just don't get it... after such impact to walk away from hospital the next day. I was thinking he will have a serious list of injuries and it would be a great news if he would be able to walk.
