1000008899 0When the kids were younger, id tried a full size bike, sort of sucked same as you experienced.

Id go with a smaller trail bike or pit bike.

I have a YCF bigy 190, with 19x16 wheels, perfect bike for my to have fun on and easy enough to trail ride. A lot less expensive than a klx140, which i think is a good bike fpr what ypu want too. Kids grow fast and would probably grow into either in a few years if ypur still just playing in the trails. For me the 110 size bikes are too small, (knees dont bend so greatSmile and not comfortable.

Gray is 19x16, red is 14x12, also can run 17x14, pretty veristile bike.

It was fun until he got on the KTM 50 with the washer stacks for the clutch.  I couldn't wait until he got off that bike.

I had 3 kids on washer stacked 50's at the same time. That was brutal.  I should've kept riding.

I just stumbled across this today and I'm thinking pretty hard about it for chasing my son in hare scrambles next year.

When Big James, Renner and Chiz’s dad’s kids started getting serious they quit and focused on their riding. I had girls back then so I kept riding. We all were beating up Dade City and the Winter Ams back then.

I'm 38 (almost 39) with two kids, 4 and 6. They are both at the age where they are riding without my help. I tried to take them trail riding at a piece of property we have. They did great, but I'm basically idling around on a KX250F spewing coolant all over the place. With that said, I've been thinking about selling my race bike and getting a trail bike so that I can putt around with the kids in the woods without overheating every time I have to stop and hear a story about the mud puddle they just went through (which I'm happy to do).

Anyone else go through this phase?

I never race anymore anyways, so my bike is just collecting dust. I've ridden it a total of 10 hours in the last 5 years. It's borderline dangerous for me to even get on the thing and try to ride like I use to. I've come to really love vintage bikes and pit bikes over the last handful of years too, due to their low seat height and manageable power. I'm really thinking like I would enjoy a new KLX230r or CRF250F or CRF300F. Smooth power, long maintenance intervals, air cooled, fuel injected. If I want to get my racing fix, I can go race a local hare scramble on one and do just fine.

Anyone have any experiences they would like to share in this department?

buy a 110 and enjoy the mini life, save the 250f for dad days and when they get bigger

No time to ride is much better than no bike to ride when you do have time, so always have a bike in the garage

Wife doesn't want me going to the track without her just incase something happens but she never had time because of my daughter's non-stop activities. Six month ago my daughter started hanging out with a kid who rides and wants to start racing and now we are at the track all the time! His current bike is a pile and Im working on buying him a newer 125 so we can keep this train rolling.

We grew up trail riding, my dad had a KDX220 (KDX200 before that), it was great for that, and absolutely bullet proof. He even raced it a few times on tracks. Older, and 2 stroke, but amazing machines.

RFN Rally Pro, Surron Ultra Bee, Zero XB. I love riding my ebike with my kids. Makes it so much easier to idle around and follow them. Then I can talk to them easier as well.

I just hit 41 and I’m not a dad but at some point all the hassle that involves going riding sort of gets to you. I mean prepping and cleaning for 2 hours for an hour of riding at max is sometimes just not worth it, especially when you ride like an old fart at times. At least that’s what I notice. I still go as it gives an extremely rewarding feeling when things do click, even if it’s just one corner. I just separated with my gf so time is not really an issue at this point too. With kids I can imagine the prep/maintenance/parenting side getting out of hand quick

Get the trail bike, it’s their turn

Figured I'd give people an update in case it helps anyone. I'm in Ohio, so it is currently winter here, but I went ahead and bought a 2024 KLX230R. I obviously can't ride it right now, but I'm excited for it. I decided to go the trail bike route because it is what sounded the most fun to me. It has a pretty low seat height and manageable power. This way, if I haven't ridden for 2 months, I can hop on it and feel comfortable right away and most likely won't get arm pump. It's important to know that I primarily ride the woods these days. If I was a motocrosser, I wouldn't have bought the 230. I'll try to update again once I get a ride on it!

+1 vote on a trail/pit bike.   Grab a 110 and rip on little tracks with them!  It's been a blast and SUPER fun reliving the "learning" years with my 10 and 11 yr old boys.  Smiles for DAYS!

So you are buying someone else's kid a bike so that you can keep going to the track? Thats awesome!! 😂

My kid blew up his 85 and my 125 on the same lap . It was truly impressive.

Just spent the weekend riding with my daughters got about 30 miles in out in ocotillo. The youngest rides a 110 around camp and switches to her 250 quad for the longer rides oldest is on a 140 with the 21/18 wheels. They stick the trails and I venture of the main line to keep it interesting.
