#20: MXGP of Australia

The more videos that get released the better the track looks. Definitely looks better than some of the Nationals tracks we’re using. Hopefully the layout races well.

Owen’s has done a couple mx2 races this year but can’t see his team choosing Australia as a round due to logistics

its shame they couldn't pull it off to get the Lawrence brothers to race,

on home turf that would help pull in the punters and generate a bit of interest for the series

If MXSports and InFront would truly get their shit together and really collaborate, not just talk about it, that could happen.
But sadly it’s hard to imagine that level of cooperation when everyone’s busy protecting their investments.

Currently SMX Vegas and MXGP Australia Darwin are the same weekend, so the idea of the Lawrences racing Darwin is immediately out. To "collaborate" (in this instance), MXGP hypotetically would need to be the weekend after, given the SMX schedule is pretty dialed and on back-to-back-to back weekends.

For the Lawrences and their current off-season commitments, this means:

- Sep 19-21: SMX Vegas/MXGP Darwin, or hypothetically push Darwin a week later to Sep 26-28 (per below, not possible)

- MXdN is Oct 3-5 - no way MXGP will run a round in Aus one weekend as above to "collaborate", and the MXdN the following in the US (this year)

- 5 week break -

- Nov 15-16 Paris SX

- Nov 22 the following weekend is Aus-X, Melbourne

The following weekend Nov 29 is WSX Gold Coast, Aus, that there is undoubtedly fan noise to get the boys to attend also. I'm sure there is the same noise to try and get Eli, Ken, etc to race Aus-X.

Back to the US for 1 month of prep then its A1. What off season? Haha.

I don’t think it needs the Lawrence’s to be super successful IMO but it does need the likes of Connolly, Kingsford, Webster, Beaton, Clout to have an Australia vs the World theme to it. Maybe even drag some Kiwi’s in to make it Aus v NZ v the World.

The hard part is the scheduling. Needs to have a spot away from SX testing so the Aussies are in MX mode. I’m more excited to see the Aussies and how they fare than the exact outcome of the MXGP placings. A deep field with Australia’s best vs the MXGP guys would be a better event though. I don’t expect them to win of course but a standout ride from a local with get the crowd going.

Yep understandably looking after their own interests, but as far as the SMX schedule being pretty dialed; it’s new, and even MXdN had to be rescheduled around SMX when it came in. Which is complete and utter bullshit imo.

SMX is absolutely useless.

It looks like a hybrid track. More sx than anything. Similar to the "playoffs".

That portion of the clip the longest he's on throttle is about 3seconds. Jump, on the brakes, sharp turn, jump, on the brakes sharp turn. To me it's like a large Supercross track.

Maybe it's just that part of track? Maybe it opens up later to higher speeds

You telling me this looks less like a GP worthy track than China or Darwin?

Now that's what an outdoor track is supposed to look like. Looks amazing.

The average Aussie promx series track is nowhere near that quality though

I lived in Darwin for 4 years. It's hot and the humidity is ridiculous. Bikes will get stolen, and the majority of people in Darwin don't even like dirt bikes, they prefer atvs and utvs.

The ideal spot would be around Gold coast - Sunshine coast Queensland. Perfect weather, amazing tourism and it would sell out.

All good points about SE QLD - except there is no suitable anywhere in the region.  But apart from that…

It takes the gov taking motorsport seriously… QLD is a rugby state and they have the Olympics coming up so no chance for at least a decade.

Sydney has all the things. Victoria has the F1, MotoGP and AusX. Perth could be an option but is even further from the rest of Australia than Darwin and the landscape around Perth is boring and flat and ugly as hell.

To me, Darwin to Adelaide are the only logical options, with govs that seem to support motorsport. But Adelaide’s national MX track, Gillman, is a joke from a MotoGP standard. And there’s nothing else decent anywhere close to Adelaide or that would draw a crowd…

So really, Darwin is the best choice and it makes sense.

I’m in Melbourne and devo I can’t make it up there but it makes the most sense.

All Australian capital cities are closer to Perth than Darwin except for Brisbane (and, well, Darwin, obviously)

And I'm sure they could build a track somewhere in SA for the event like they have in Darwin. Even if people did want to go to Darwin for the race, there's nowhere near enough accommodation to fill out the attendance to that of a typical GP unless like 20% of the city shows up.

i dont know much about mx over there , but who the fk wants to goto darwin, OZ is massive, it would be like going from the UK to russia, just to watch a moto

Sydney to Darwin is actually further than London to Orlyonok (site of last Russian GP) jfl
