I had a look at the rules for the MXON.
As a reserve rider, you can only enter the team when one of the main riders get injured.

Of course I don't hope anyone get's injured, but I hoped the selection wasn't final already if you look at the shape Herlings is already in after only 3/4 weeks back on the bike...

As I am a firm believer you should race for the country where you were born.
Thats the whole purpose of the race.
Otherwise we could also form groups from 3 riders on brand etc.

You also see this with the olympics and athletes who changed nationalities later in life.
Not a fan of it.

Same for the Puerto Rico team.
Nice to get some extra Americans on the line.
But then they should change the format and make it some global playoffs with all the big names in it.

Dean Wilson rode for Canada then decided he wanted to ride for GB.

As a reserve rider, you can only enter the team when one of the main riders get injured.

A team can substitute any rider for any other rider up until the end of technical inspection on the Friday. The reason teams name a reserve is so they know that they have someone who is not only willing to step in but will have a bike available to ride. This is why I don't believe the theory that Herlings isn't on the team because KTM won't give him a bike.

my personal opinion , I love me some Jett but prime Jeffery giving Jett the works in any giving time & race , sand , hard pack or loamy dirt , which ever way Jett want it , the bullet will show up & blow doors off

Perhaps the backup is a face-savings ploy for both. If Herlings isn’t going to be properly supported or wants time on the Honda, he doesn’t want to go. But neither country team or Herlings want to say that so he is reserve?

Puerto Rico is an American territory, so it's not exactly comparable.
