Colby Lippincott’s life was sadly lost at the age of 14. This is tragic and I’m not 100% sure of the exact cause of his crash. This has started the ball rolling of a law in Massachusetts trying to get passed called Colby’s Law. It is for BMX and Moto Tracks. Look, safety is one thing BUT a vague law being enforced by people who don’t know or understand the sport is bad. One part kinda of says it all “(2) Elbow and knee pads, gloves, and body armor for motocross riders.” They have no clue what they are talking about when talking about safety gear. Plus there is this in the bill too, “Special safety measures, such as speed limitations and restricted access to advanced courses, shall be implemented for youth riders.” A youth is anyone under 18 by the law. With this law and someone enforcing it who does not know, they could say “No youth riders can go over 15mph”. This is bad and I hope someone in the area steps up and talks to the law makers or more states could follow suit.

If only we had an American Motorcycle Association to help with this.
They have regional representatives, correct? I read every AMA mag (its the only bathroom reading material I have these days) since they send me three copies every month. They are always talking about the work they do. Admittedly, I do not read this section much. Should be able to reach out to them, correct? I assume you were being sarcastic, but they often spout off in the mag how much work they do. Hell, give a try. I agree that that law is worrisome and vague.
I don’t understand how this isn’t nationwide Moto news.

Taxachusetts likes to make shitty laws... are you surprised?
I want to be disappointed.
Yeah. Section 5 is so vague that it’s going to be left to unelected bureaucrats, who know nothing about motocross, to make rules at their own discretion. I also see Section 6(a-2) and Section 8(b) being issues too.
Just about every law or program on the books starts out with well intentions, then devolves into waste/fraud/abuse and a bunch of unintended consequences.
This is why self regulation is important. If the people who know what to do won't do anything to fix it, then someone who doesn't know will. Imo, there have been too many young mx deaths lately, and no one seems willing to do anything about it.
That is very true.
“The bill would require tracks to have safety nets, hay bales, and medical staff on the facility during races,” said Densmore, a family friend of the Lippincott’s who is helping them get the bill passed. “It would force tracks to have signs that a jump is coming up and safety measures that are common sense.”
There's no way a person who rides suggested this. After looking at his social, it looks like he got a 250f at 13 years old?
If you need signage stating a jump is approaching, you're not ready to be on a motocross track.
Imagine every local track In the state having Matthes nets on every corner.
After the first year they would be all tattered with big holes in them 😂
I would only have the AMA rag in an outhouse for back up ass wipe. Do really think they are going to do anything? Kind of like the NRA bullshit. Shiny magazines and no action.
And it's Massatwoshits anyway, any mini kid halfway serious is already in Fla. NC, SC etc.
My issue with the AMA is, why aren’t they putting this out? Why not give us all the info? Tell everyone “Here is this unfortunate event, here who it happened to and a little background. Here is the law and the issues with it and here is how we can help the government make better laws in that area”
Instead, it’s a bunch of us Vitards doing their jobs. MXSports (who is owned by the same people who own RacerX) should know about this and put it in their magazine.
It’s surprising more states haven’t passed laws like this. As mentioned above, activities that don’t regulate themselves get regulated by others. Motorcycles are a net negative to the majority of the population, and a child’s death will exacerbate those connotations.
Before we throw the AMA and MX Sports under the bus, let’s ascertain whether their actions have prevented similar laws from going into effect.
I forwarded to the AMA Government Relations Team
I hope your email isn’t the first of them hearing about it, but thank you for raising awareness just in case
