Looks like racing to me. Not a whole different from Alessi's pass at GH.

Pretty damn impressive huck by BT shortly before that!

wow great video, I was mad that BT did what he did to Short, just ask TerryK (he was the smart one who kept saying I won't believe it until I see it), rest of us were butthurt. Glad to see BT cleared of all the dirty hate we all exude...

I have that on film too. Marmont fell due to Marmont trying to stick his nose on the inside of Trey after it was already to late. Had he been patient a pass was inevitable. Trey was tired and Jay was fresh and catching him like crazy.

You are not supposed to make yourself easy to pass, but Short has a history of weaving and blocking like crazy. BT probably thought it was going to be more of the same and didn't feel like dealing with it.

I have always thought that if Short rode his own race he would be better off. Instead, he gets a killer start and blocks like crazy until the dam breaks and then he gets blitzed by the next 5 guys.

Maybe those 5 guys would have passed him anyway.......but pumping his arms up and putting his mind in a frenzy doesn't help.
You're out of your mind. Short has a history of taking every outside line on the track and making himself an easy target. He had a hard pass coming just because he didn't cover the inside line but, BLOCKING? No way.

Why is everyone still arguing about this? BT and shorty both say that rubbing is racing and neither have hard feelings!

What's strange is that Townley raced as hard and clean as anyone against Villo when they were both on 250s, and as soon as he got on a 450 over here he turned into a dumbass.

Not really a criticism, though: it's human nature, for better and worse, to see one's own actions as fair and other people's actions that affect you as unfair.

Yep, racing it is. If it happened in a national, the thread about it would've hardly had 2 pages.

It all depends on who would be on a receiving end. We all know how it works in America.

DC,

I was just going by what a few people told me then Van Horebeek mentioned Canard took Marmont out. I didn't mean to try and make Canard look bad, he's a great dude.

My apology's.

Geoff
from what i have heard trey say about it, marmont basically landed on the back of trey's bike & trey was lucky to stay up....i have seen it mentioned several times, in several different places. This is the only place i have seen it called a cleanout by cannard...was'nt there, but i call b.s.

I guess you didn't see the magazine (transworld or racer x) where they asked a bunch of pro riders different questions and when the question, "who is the most dirty rider on the circuit?" came up ..............Short was overwhelmingly the winner of that one.

Money quotes:

Racer X: I know this is sort of starting on a downer, but you won that moto, but you killed Shorty. What happened there? What was the story with that?
Ben Townley: I was going for it. I wanted to win.

Did you think you would hit or did you think he would let off?
I thought he would let off, yeah. Maybe he didn’t know I was there. I don’t know, it’s racing. It’s motocross. It happens and I don’t know what else to say.

Somebody asked me right afterward why you would do that, and I said, "Dude, I would take out my mom to win a moto at the MXoN."
Without a doubt. I wanted to win. For me, it’s important to get back to that level that I know I can be, and I think I proved that once I got to the front. That little German f&#$er is a fast one...

Kind of refreshing to hear some brutal honesty, IMO.

I guess I missed where Short said there was no hard feelings? And what they say for an interview and how they feel is two diffrent things. I would like to ask BT if it would have been cool if Short would have roosted his azzz on parade lap for the second moto? I mean he thought he was pretty cool when he did it over a racing move with MA. No matter how you view the pass on Short ,he showed he has class. And BT could learn a few things about how to handle himself following a racing incident when he at the receiving end of it.

Ever hear RC say, 'Short ain't afraid to run it in on a man.'? Short would have gladly done the same thing to BT. There is a big difference between blocking, which Short doesn't do and block passing, something Short and any other pro worth his salt will do. If you can't watch Short and see he takes every opportunity to take an outside line, you're not only out of your mind, you're blind.

Short wouldn't have done it at the MX of Nations! The reason your ridng for your Country/Team/points and it was too early to take a stupid chance like that and hurt your Team chances at the title. They where out front it would be very stupid to make a risky pass for postion in the first couple laps of a the race.BT was racing for himself, not his country he had nothing to lose. Read his interview it's about HIM getting back to where he was! There's Big diffrence in what Short,Dungey, and Carard were racing for compared to BT was-FACT!

On the film it looks like there was nothing in it. BT isn't a dirty rider. He's been a little desperate this year to get back to where he was before his injury, but that wasn't as bad as everyone was saying. I think the emotion of the moment made people angry.

I very much appreciate BT's honesty.. I do wonder how he can say what he said and then have a month long tantrum about what Alessi did to him. Although the Alessi incident might have been different if Alessi just put it like BT did and admitted he took BT out. Sometimes brutal honesty can defuse a situation. Then again sometimes not so much.

I have to wonder if BT has even seen the vid clip above? He might have answered differently ... as in " that's nothing more than lines coming together". I suspect he may not have seen the new clip when he was interviewed and thinks he looks worse than it really does.

For any of you still calling for BT's head, have you watched the clip? I originally thought it looked pretty bad judging from the Broadcast feed .... but suggested we wait until a proper sequence of it arrives. And it did. It clearly shows how Short's outside line / berm caused him to rebound back into Townley. Townley had probably already hit the gas and wasn't ready for Short coming back into him.

I don't think the BT / MA clip from GH shows enough to clearly say what went down. A more overhead view would have helped sort it out ... but we've all had times when you say Eff it and just pull the trigger going for a line. If it works out for you, you hope the other guy stays up.

And of course if you end up hitting the dirt and the other guy stays up ... well then, he obviously cleaned you out with a 'dirty move'.

Cool

cant win without taking someone out? that must be why shorty beat him on saturday. couldnt get close enough to take his wheel out.
and take your mom out to win mxdn? why? the rest of NZ didnt do shit. so it didnt matter if you won. especially after tanking your 2nd moto.

Did you see the pass Geoff? I think Marmount cleaned himself out. The problem with BT's pass is everyone saw him cry on tv/internet about Alessi pass at the USGP .That pass was nothing compared to his move and then it just racing? Maybe he's been riding with Bubba and his brother so he lost all consideration for anyone on the track but himself? [smile]

Short didn't have to worry about Ken Roczen on Saturday either and that didn't stop Ken from passing him with better lines.

BT101 is a badass. It sucked big time for Shorty and the USA in moto 2, but it's called racing for a reason. Shorty was bad to the bone in moto3, and showed mega heart coming back in moto2....way to go AS29!

The difference between the Alessi takeout of Townley and the Townley takeout on Short was about 15mph and a black eye.
