Are you sure it's intended for a 38mm PWK, quad-vent, Air striker, AG short body carb?   I have a feeling since it's 20 yrs old it may be be intended for a different/older version of PWK carb.   In any case, you can't be riding around with a sticky slide in your carb.

It does move from bottom to top and back with cable spring, but juddering can be felt from throttle tube. I did confirm that its the slide and nothing else.

I'm tempted to check with paint where is touches and do very minor carb body sanding with ~1000grit paper

Note* if you do purchase a new slide, you will also need a new throttle cable holder. The oem Yamaha holder will not work properly in a non oem Yamaha spec slide.

Yes, it could potentially be this.  If you use the incorrect cable holder, the needle may not "float" as it needs to and can cause up/down drag and even eventually break the needle.

I do have correct cable holder without spring.

Sticking problem exists even without needle or cable attached when I compared oem vs new slide by just dropping them in without needle

Pulled the carb out. Found some small scratches at the front round sliding surface - sanded 800-1500-2000 and sticking is gone... oem slide did have some play when down the hole but new slide has about zero play now

Propably will buy new 5.5 as a spare if I find one

Finally got around to testing diggers setup and wow he is the jetting guru! Thanks helping everyone out. Bike pulls properly off the low end now.

This is with the 6.0 slide and ccl needle

52 pilot/182 main/Airscrew 1.5 out

40:1 with 90 ethanol free

75⁰ @ 500ft

I probably could drop to the 50 pilot when it warms up but I'm impressed. I switched back to stock gearing from a 50t rear and the bike will actually do decent in 3rd gear now with some clutch. Only thing I changed over stock was an R304 shorty.

Do u have the x model ? I’m thinking if I should get diggers setup but I’m not sure if it’s crucial for the regular model too .

I just have the regular 125. I know the 125x has slightly different stock jetting. Believe it has a richer slide?

The bike is super responsive at any throttle position. Best running 125 I have ever tried. Don’t forget to get the stationary cable holder with the CCL needle.

Digger Jetting:

Throttle Valve(slide)         6.0                                       7.0 is stock(6.5 X model)
Jet Needle                       CCL
Clip                                    3                                         2(high elevation/warm)
Power Jet                        35                                       Stock
Pilot                                  52                                       50-55
Air Screw                        1-1.5 turns out
Main jet                           182                                   178-185

Throttle Valve stamped 6 for Keihin PWK38S
Keihin Part #:   018-521    N502-17E01

JD Jetting Part #:   JDKH16
—————————————————————————————————
Pro Circuit Jetting:

See Pro Circuit jetting specs on their website
Only recommended change
Clip position         4      On the needle jet

Will need:
GYTR Jetting Kit YZ125 22’-24’(Y4 Needle)
B4X-CARBS-KT-10
or
Y3 Needle
Keihin Part#:  N427-11Y03   017-138

The Y3 needle you show as 017-138 is an 86mm long needle from a CR special.

Stock needle is 66mm long. I don’t think this is correct.

First run with new setup. Could not find CCL...

32:1 Castrol Racing, 98 pump gas

Sea level, 43F

#5.5, 55PJ, 185MJ, std powerjet

N3CW, 4th notch. Airscrew 1

Rideable at deep sand moto, maybe better when weather warms up.

Started with 3rd notch and airscrew 2, was bogging quite a lot in tight turn woods track in initial tests

You're more than likely just out of the range, temp wise with that dual taper N3xx series needle, at 43F. It's fairly rich on the bottom but gets a little lean into the middle, which is what I think you're describing. At those temps you may need to use an N3EW or an N8RW needle, or possibly an NEDW needle.

Thanks. Went to N8RW as it was only one easily available. Still at 4th clip and no other changes.

Definately best so far and would say no problems in normal deep sand moto with some ruts to ride. Previous problems with rolling the throttle open from any rpms are gone. Of course 125 wont jump forward in deep sand from low/mid rpm but thats something for me to learn.

Still I'm wondering if I might be lean somewhere and something to be changed to be safe as after 20min normal ride I did a two berm blasting laps and outside lines quite much WOT than normally and after I finally let off the throttle, I think there was some kind of lean symptom for couple of seconds, kind off hanging and/or uneven idle and or hesitation

Absolutely zero spooge at the silencer end, pipe was quite hot when I came back to the pits.

Hopefully they did it right and put a richer slide in and not just some mains and pilots.  If they put the Digger settings in, KTM EFI bikes are officially dead !  😁

EMX125 is the fastest 125 class going and nearly all the KTM's are the current model injected bikes. I know in oz one of the top 125 riders had the injected model, but top ends were every 2hrs max.

In a series like that, what bike a rider is on is dictated by team, sponsor, contingency, etc.  Also, the availability of good condition carb-KTM's is getting slim now that we are a few years past them.

Thanks PC, I ended up going back to Pro Circuit Jetting on our 22’ YZ125.  Bike seemed to run well with Digger Jetting(#6 Slide, CCL/CCM) but no matter what I did I could not stop fouling plugs with the rich 6 slide.  I run PC jetting, pump gas with a little C12. The only change I make from PC recommendations I generally run clip position 4 on the Y4 needle to avoid a low end bog.  I’ll go up and down on the main and pilot depending on elev/temps but PC jetting seems to work well. I leave the needle at clip 4 in most all elev/temps.

On the 2026 YZ125.  Yamaha changed the jetting specs. Curious what they are.
Revised carburetor setting for more consistent performance in varied conditions.

Yamahas jetting recommendations on the 22-25 are pretty bad so glad to see they finally updating them.

I was able to do back to back to back to back testing today with the (#5.65 slide N3CW-3) and the (#6 slide CCL-3). In my opinion, the 5.65 slide and the N3CW-3 work a little better for overall performance. The engine runs slightly cleaner and more efficient with no gaps in the power. They are VERY CLOSE in performance, and this really is splitting hairs. I did not change the pilot or main with this test, just the needles and slides.

After a ton of testing and note taking, I have finally arrived at a setting that makes this bike (2024 YZ125X) run like it should have straight off the showroom floor. THANK YOU DIGGER for leading us down a good path with this bike!

Updated setting posted below for the YZ125X…

185 Main
55 Pilot
5.65 slide (custom made from a 5.0 slide)
N3CW needle in 3rd clip
AS 1.25 to 1.5 out
Temps - 50 to 80 degrees
Elevation - Sea Level
Fuel - Avgas mixed 50/50 with 93 pump
Premix - Bel Ray H1R at 32/1
Intermediate level MX

Summertime jetting update for the YZ250 needle series:

In 80 plus degree weather and high humidity I was getting a slightly rich sensation in the 0 to 1/4 throttle range. After testing several different combinations I settled on the N3CJ needle in the 3rd clip position. I have been told the NYHW works great as well and will give it a try once it comes in (currently on back order).

In my testing, the pilot and main are good in a wide range of temperatures and don’t need adjustment. The needle is the adjustment that makes the difference in getting my bike to run spot on.

You were fouling iridium plugs? I’ve only ran the digger setup once and it did seem slightly rich on pilot but I’ve never fouled a plug. Had too much rain here as of late so I haven’t rode the digger setup in warmer weather. I’ll be curious to see what they changed on the 26 model I’m sure someone will get the parts and test it out.

Interesting to hear that about Digger's setup. I ended last fall on a 182 main, 55 pilot, #6 slide, and CCL needle in position 4. So actually richer that he recommended, but never came close to fouling a plug. I do run straight VPR at 32:1, which tends to like a little richer jetting than pump.

Clip rule always run the 3rd change needle to stay in the 3rd.  Muggy weather jet it leaner .

The NYHx series needle is the exact same as the N3Cx series, but it's 1/2 clip position leaner. NYHW in #3== to N3CW in clip 2.5

The last 2 YZ125's I jetted, I used an N3EJ #3, 52, 185, and a 5.5--5.65 slide. It's a balancing act with the heat/ humidity in using the larger main, and that N3xx series needle. I'm going to work on spec'ing out a different series OEM needle.

Yamahas jetting recommendations on the 22-25 are pretty bad so glad to see they finally updating them.

Yeah Iridium,  Digger setup.  32:1 Klotz R50.  91 pump with a little C12.  #6 Keihin Slide, Kawi cable holder,  CCL #3, 180 main, 52 pilot, 35 power jet. We raced it a whole season with Digger jetting.  Tried various mains, pilots, clip positions, CCM needle.  Could get it to run right and strong but were fouling numerous plugs.  Luckily never during a race.  I would put a new plug in just before every race to be safe but it was annoying during practice. I attribute the fouling to the #6 slide.    I went back to PC jetting, stock #7 slide, clip 4 and no more fouling and it runs good

As soon as Yamaha releases the 26 online manual I’ll check to see their new specs.

BTW.  I am selling my Keihin #6 slide(no notch) CCL needle, CCM needle and cable holder if anyone wants them.

According to the RMATV website, the below jetting is standard on the 2026 YZ125. The manual is still not available online, so can’t get the clip position and verify that RMATV parts diagram is correct. In short, Yamaha switched to the YZ250 needle series.

That N3EW needle and 65 Pilot jet would be too rich in my bike with the 5.65 slide. But with the #7 slide it may work great. Will do some testing once the manual is released.

Main - 178
Pilot - 65
Needle - N3EW
Power Jet - 95
Slide - #7

65 pilot with a 7 slide can still have some low end bog, in my experience at sea level. I wonder why they didn't just go with a richer slide. 95 power jet is interesting.

Slides are the most expensive part of the carb.   Jets are cheap.  Yamaha wants the 125 and 250 to both use the 7 slide just like KTM used the #4 slide in the Mikuni on every single 2-stroke 125/150/250/300 from 2017-2023.  It's for their bottom line and it sucks for the consumer to have to deal with it.

The N3CG is a half clip position LEANER than the N3EW.

The N3CG is two starting diameters RICHER than the N3EW.

a little bit off topic but does anybody know how a N1EF needle compares to the N3CG? i have it on a 2019 GAS GAS and the bike spooges a lot and has very poor gas mileage.

They have the manual up now for the 26. CDI is different as well as the intake boot for the carb. Just did a quick glance on mobile.
