It was a crappy pass, and he didn't need to take him out. You can say "rubbin's racing" all you want, but I won't buy it in this circumstance. This was a Barcia move for sure. Very amateurish for Townley to ride that way.

Yeah flarider I was kind of scratching my head on that post as well.

I kind of passed judgment before seeing it as well though. Lurch or Rob Bydos (one of the announcers) said over the PA that "BT just straight up took out Shorts front wheel" for everyone at the track to hear so I took his word for it. I kind of joined in w/a whole section of fans at the track leaning over the fence and flipping BT the birdie during the race. At that point in the heat of the moment, while at the race, emotions get the better of you though. Now that I've seen it though it looks to me that the announcers were right on. Straight up take out IMO.

That's racing though. Leave the door open and somebody will break in. A race track is just like a bad neighborhood in that respect.

So booing is lame 6 posts down but flipping the bird is fine? Grinning Wink
1st of all yes I still think booing is lame. What they are referring to in that thread is booing CP just because he's French or whatever. I also say in that post that I understand it at a patriotic event such as the Des Nations. Either way this was a totally different situation. BT had just (according to the announcers) put a member of team USA on the ground with a blatant take out of the front wheel move. Jamma I usually think most your posts are pretty on but in this instance (although you're obviously just having fun w/it) you're comparing apples to oranges.

I guess I could of been like the English fan at Donnington and started throwing stuff at BT. Wink

I love BT! That move was "American racing" in a nutshell.
Remember RC at Unadilla in 98? "I hate to take someone out like that, especially, Dowd, but I\m here to win and he was in my way".

Put all the flags aside and live in reality.

Hey jmar, today is the one day that all the fans are supposed to celebrate their respective nations and flags. That's why it's called the Motocross of Nations.

Why don't you put down that big frosty mug of Hate America First brew you are always drinking from for one day. Don't worry, it'll be there tomorrow for you to pick right back up where you left off.

Basically what you are saying that I am a hater, because I don't have the attitude that Americans are always right?

I stand on my original statement. Short has dished out much more than he has received.

I am a fan of the riders, not the countries that they are from.
No, I am not saying you are a hater because you don't have the attitude that American are always right. I am saying that you have the attitude that Americans are almost always WRONG (for loving the U.S.A and being proud about it), which is just as stupid and kind of weird.

Townley's pass was extremely rough and uncalled for whether intentional or not and has nothing whatsoever to do with what country each guy is from.

It doesn't matter. Nothing I say or anyone else says is going to change your mind. You will continue to bash the U.S. fans at every turn, just as you always have.

Hey, I know! Since your such a fan of the riders maybe we can get them to change the name of the event to the Motocross of Riders. Everyone can just wear the same grey gear and ride the same grey bikes!

That way we get stop all those silly fans and riders from Great Britain, Austrailia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Ukraine, France, U.S.A, Brazil, Mexico, etc., etc. from getting together in a friendly competition and celebrating it together. Maybe we can get rid of the Olympics while we are it it!

Maybe YOU should try living in reality for a change.

Saw two pics, read this thread... the general consensus is that it was a take out so at this point I'm siding with that. Andrew will probably say it was a racing incident as he always does but what if they would have lost because of it?

I gave Ben a little benefit of the doubt by saying MAYBE he came in a little hot. But either way, these guys are professionals and they shouldn't need to hit one another to make a pass. For example, when was the last time Dungey had to knock someone down to pass them? or screw up by coming in hot taking someone down while passing? The states won so some people are saying who cares it's racing... but oh man what a different story it would be if that caused them to lose. The majority of people would be saying send him back to europe etc.

You can say it's racing all you want.... but I don't agree. Ben was faster/better a clean pass should have been possible. Ben needs to learn that as it seems he has gone down many times this year riding over his head or hitting people in corners.I think Ben's a great racer and seems like a nice guy but he needs to settle down a bit on the track before he gets injured again.

Well, I think he did injure himself in the second moto, so there you go.

My Mom was at the race and send a text- "BT just killed Short"

It was brutal but its racing. I'm sure BT would do that one differently if he could do it over.

this whole thread is so full of fail its ridiculous.

lets cliff note it......

Townley and Shorty got together.

Since Short is a USA rider, on team USA, and Townley isnt on team USA, its was the most epic of horse poo, deliberate takeouts ever in the existance of racing.

If you dont agree and are american, you are a snail eating communist bastard that should be dipped ballz first in any number of hot liquids.

If you arent american and dont agree, we all know you dont know anything about racing.

If you are american and agree, welcome brother, here is a beer.

If you arent american and agree, look a new long lost brother, here is a beer.

then sprinkle karma every 5th or 6th word in a post about it.

that about sum it up?

I was watching the redbulltv cast. saw it the first time and the replay.... they were both coming into a left hand 90 corner. from the angle that was shown, it looked like bt was inside and just head of short. as any racer knows, he who is on the inside and ahead controls the corner. dont care about politics or intent, thats racing 101. Now, until a different angle or footage surfaces showing bt cutting across the corner and missiling into shorty going for a pickup pass or a leg breaker, imo, its racing..... ill go prepare my ballz for the hot dipping.

also, lets not forget, shorty isnt called the SFA for nothing and has executed lord knows how many passes just like that. (and if you dont know what SFA stands for, get the hell out of this thread) Shorty is no babe in the woods and I am pretty sure, while pissed, hes not in a lets go fight mood about it.

Not really. He who is on the inside controls the corner. Does not have to be ahead. Even a little behind and you still control the corner. Are we all cleared up now?

Yes, but if you are ahead, AND on the inside, you would REALLY control the corner, right?

Agreed

But the being ahead removes all doubt, including the ol' "he center punched me" defense

Seemed to me like there were a lot of corners on that track that had no inside line. I think Ben was just pissed at the euro prep job.

that's the difference between MC and Dungey vs RC and BT......

MC and Dungey had (has) the confidence to know they could pass clean, no need to put anyone down... but... some other riders don't have that inner confidence, so they punt riders to get around....

some will go down in history as class acts, such as MC and Dungey... others, as fast racers that were hacks...

RC didn't need to hack Tortelli, Pastrana, Dowd, etc to become the multi champ he was.... he didn't need all that stupid look-back bullshit on lappers he used to pull... some people overlook that stuff.... some don't.... IMO MC was a much better champion than RC ever was because it's much harder to pass clean than to just clean somebody out.... i hope MC knows there are at least a few fans out there that appreciate that..... i hope Dungey knows that too, and doesn't drag himself down to the RV and BT levels in the battles ahead...

I dont think BT was thinking I am going to take him out? He was just riding aggressive, thats why he won the moto. It could have gone the other way with BT on the ground and AS riding away?

RC did look backs like crazy when he was younger....are you nuts or just forgetful?

and I can't find it, but there's that one race where RC and TP collide.....you forget that?

RC was as aggressive as anyone and did whatever needed to be done to make the pass, and if that required bumping, then he bumped you.

Reality means nothing. People choose their legends, and create their own sense of reality.

No one rides for team "europe", dumbass. My reference of townley as a euro is stemming from his years in the FIM series, which is basically the european series.

On a side note, just listened to the short podcast and he said he hoped it was an accident because he got hit really hard.

Marmont obviously didn't get that memo: From the RacerX MXoN report:

With two laps to go, Marmont tried to race Canard to an inside line, and Canard got there first, sending Marmont highsiding violently as he ran into Canard. Canard finished the race in eighth with a bent subframe from the contact. Marmont finished off with a DNF.

I am pretty good at reading lips. When the camera was on BT after the race, when he was taking off his gloves, he said to his mechanic, " i hit him" while nodding yes. Pretty sure.

Team USA still won at the end of the day regardless of the incident or not. They were the more consistent team on the day and got the job done. Ben was riding for his country and was doing all he could to push team NZ forward. Racing is racing. Shit happens sometimes so there is not point dwelling on it because what is done is done and you can't go back and change it. Hardly surprising that you americans can find something to whinge about even though you won. NZ's 8th placing is good considering the team we had with Brad having to step down off the Suzuki 450 he usually rides and step up to the mark on the biggest stage in the motocross world and ride a Honda 250f he has never been on before.
