Both, I think he has been 1st or 2nd off the start in 8/10 motos so far. He's probably made 12-15 passes all year
He is such a beast!
Believe the hype
That level of consistency would not be possible without the starting grates.

Are they using a start map? I certainly think so. In the street track world, riders will do practice starts specifically to collect data so the map can be refined to the specific track, tire, and conditions. I saw one video of Jett doing starts from in front of the gate and assumed that is what he was doing. Of course he still has to react well, but it’s tough to beat a well tuned computer when it comes to getting the perfect amount of power to the ground (as the rest of the motorsports world knows). Just gaining a foot or three in the first few seconds is a major advantage. HRC is doing something better than the rest.
yea probably, but everyone else is on grates too...
Something smells fishy around here.
Jett Alessi
I think it’s both, but those Hondas have some serious beans.
That’s the point. Grates level the playing field, but ruts are all different making things more unpredictable as an added variable.
Jett is a machine.
I thought JT said they have their start maps setup better than other teams. Which is weird because you would think all teams would have to he same capability to develop equivalent results.
More like Darryl Alderman did.
Hunter already went over this on Pulp MX.
Yes the bike has a starting map.
But the Lawrence brothers have to control and give the feed back of what they want to the guy who does the GET. It’s a small window; many starts that have been done to be perfected.
They still need the reaction time, technique and control.
GET does many teams, they all have access to create there own window
Tell your sister to close her legs!!!! Hahaha I kiddddd I kidddd
Yaa Phil said something on the pulp show about how ridiculous it is that these other top teams with all this money hasn’t figured out the same shit that Honda has. Steve said it takes time and Phil said Yaa no shit but they’ve been doing this for 2 years now and the other teams should have it figured out.
Shimoda had access to the same map tech, he's still sucks at starting. Lol
And if you look at his teammate- Hymas has had the most holeshots in the class.
Pit Row
I am also surprised the other mfgs have yet to figure this out. Jett and Hunter are clearly elite starters, but their 450s are another level off the gate.
It's a combo of well tuned bike cpu for starts, well setup suspension to hook up and get traction and rider control of the clutch level and throttle control + body positioning
They often get a good jump out of the gate, but one thing they also do better is braking in time.
Each start you often see other riders along side of them, like Prado in the second moto yesterday. Jett braked and turned while Prado went to the other side of the world before he turned around.
And it’s almost the same in every start. The first turn is executed better than what the start straight is. Because it’s rare now to see them with a full bike length on the start straight before the first corner.
Of all the holeshots Jett got, in many of them he passes 2-3 riders from the middle of the first corner towards the holeshot line because the other riders comes in to hot and open up the inside for him.
You've been paying attention Tumic and summed it up nicely.
In a nutshell.......the rider ultimately makes the difference.
Nah. Take all the maps, holeshot devices, etc. away and you'll get completely different results.
How much grates and start maps was it around when MC holeshot more or less every race he lined up to, or Alessi?.
I would say it’s Jett, he’s pretty good if you haven’t noticed….. don’t think he races with confidence, I think his normal is winning, and anything else is just out of the ordinary to him.
They didn't though. Your memory is not accurate.
Well put.
Jett is a great starter.
Take away all the grates, electronics HSD's for everyone and you'll find that Jett will still be on average better than the rest.
MC was a wizzard with his starts and I'd like to hear 971_fan's synopsis as to why he was so good.
Yeah, my bad. Alessi was clearly the worst starter of that era…
McGrath was known for his exceptional starts, which where crucial for his success in Supercross.
And they changed from factory ecu to GET and still rip holeshots.
Hunter mentioned 1000s of practice starts.
