Heart, charging late, making passes, hanging it out. Positive attitudes, not whining, crying, excuse makers. Barcia, Anderson, etc...

Pretty much copy paste on your post.

Have always been drawn to smooth riders with great technique on the bike.

I like to see elevation and smart riders, not the brawlers that just ride harder and harder instead of smarter.

I was a Reed fan back in the days, then Roczen, Sexton and now the Lawrence brothers all because of their riding style and making it look effortless.

And being a Honda guy for about 22 years draws me towards the Honda guy’s naturally.

Bulldogs>ballerinas. In both, how they ride and how they act off the bike.

With you on all - have to have either a fluid style or an ability to dig deeper than the other guys. Basically something that catches your eye. Plenty of great riders have always been sort of invisible out there. But my favorites always catch my eye somehow .

I view “bullying” as unnecessarily trying to take people out or screw with them - especially people who they are clearly faster than. Race forward and be a man. There are some exceptions- obviously if there is blocking by a slower rider that opens the door to contact, late race passes for the win, LCQ, etc. But if a rider is catching the guy in front of him  by multiple seconds a lap and then goes out of their way to knock the other dude down when they go past…. Lame. I’d probably just call it “riding like a douchebag” though.

For me it’s all about those moments where a rider pushes body & machine beyond logical limits.

It was Eli’s wheelie through the rollers at Daytona, Anderson’s ‘Rocketman’ clip, Gasjer’s slo-mo peg-dragging scrub, Jo’s turndown scrub in the rollers.

These individual moments made me a fan for life of each rider….

Give me a break! This narrative about motocross riders being 'tough' is only true in most cases within the context of racing motocross/supercross.

People like Old Hombre would run a mile to get away from a street fight. And, if he were to be caught up in one he'd get the shit beaten out of him. He's only 'tough' when he has a 230 pound motorcycle between him and the other guy...and when the trackside officials can protect his spoilt arse should things get to heavy.

Willingness to take chances and ride over their normal pace. Not settling in to a pace and accepting results as they come.

I was thinking Jason Lawrence, Deegan types.  Cocky and disrespectful.  Taking people out and being a dick off the track.

Riders who dig deep are usually my favorites. If they have a bad situation but turn it into a good result, that's what I love. RC has that attitude. Hannah had a great quote from the 1987 MXDN, wherein he was riding a 125 (hated those,) and had some difficulty to overcome (bad start in the mud) (paraphrasing here): "I hate to lose. The USA wasn't gonna lose, not because of Bob Hannah!"

My personal favorites couldn't be more opposite off track...Tomac and Deegan. But, I like the way both ride. Neither one are boring to watch ride, probably because they both kind of steer with the rear and they don't ride dirty. Jett is a great rider, but to me, boring as shit to watch. So for me, what makes me a fan of someone is the way they ride. A distant second for me is to be an American rider. If everybody racing was from whatever country and only 1 American were racing...I'm pulling for the American.

Let’s take a look at some riders I’m a fan of:

David Bailey, Broc Glover, Johnny O’Mara, Larry Ward, Hames Stewart, Ryan Dungey, Chase Sexton, Haiden Deegan and Hunter Lawrence are a few.  I think Jett carries himself well, and oh yeah, I’m a fan of Roger DeCoster

"1987 AMA 125 National Champion, Micky Dymond, was passed over. The two-time 125 champ was livid." - yes - Hannah had an obligation and he met it in a sloppy mudfest on an inferior Suzuki 125. Legendary ride.

That is a really good list but pretty sure deegan doesn't fit in the riders who are respectful on/off  the track.
