Go to LL's and see some of those kids.. Big motorhome/toy hauler, big trailer with the works in it and 10 bikes!!! I don't know where they get their money but I can't compete with that. I thought I was styling now, upgraded from an open trailer to an enclosed!!!

Has any 'rich kid' gone on to become a successful motocrosser? I know a lot of mini dad's are rich, that's why they have all the cool stuff, and do good, but do they continue on to greatness at the pro-level? And I dont mean 100k in the bank rich, I mean never really have to work again unless daddy makes me, mom and dad can/have retired type of rich. Just curious.
I believe Kallos was sponsored by Lancer gear before JT. I think his parents or grandpa owned Lancer. Latter on JT bought the brand and Shawn was in JT.
Anyone knows the exact story? DanDunes?

Butler Brothers....

They didn't have a big fancy rig when they were racing (just a truck and a 40' enclosed trailer) but they were never short on bikes, mods, or travel money. I know Dad helped them but maybe they were pulling sponsorship even way back then to get around. FlaRider would probably know better.

Even if they were given a free ride at the beginning I applaud the dedication Forest has put into running a race team. Like them or not, they bust their ass to get their sponsors and to promote their sponsors.

Think you guys are looking at the wrong end of startline with pro riders. Look at the Funmovers, tour buses etc with a couple of Cobra 50's on board that chase the dream of
an amateur win at Loretta Lynn's.

I am pretty sure George Jobe came from a wealthy family.. and he turned out pretty darn good.

I remember when he showed up with the very first Honda 125 Elsinore we had ever seen Made my Zundapp look like crap, we all switched to Japanese bikes within a year in the 125 class.

While he never raced Nationals, STEVE McQUEEN was pretty wealthy, and raced MX, Desert, Grand Prix's, and even was on the ISDT team on a Triumph no less.

I know a couple privateers who parent's have millions of dollars! One actually is worth over a billion. He quit racing last year and works now though. Father only gave him 300K a year to race!

All the money in the world doesn't replace HEART out on the track!

Steve McQueen had pretty humble origins. Whatever strength of character he had was developed way before he became a movie star.

Dave Castillo but never a big name in moto

Eric Grondahl's dad owns the Planet Fitness franchise...

I don't go to the races much anymore so I don't remember her first name, but I saw a girl named McGraw at a NESC race with a crazy setup. Heard her grandfather was the McGraw in McGraw-Hill.

Dave Castillo may never have been the biggest name to the public but within the industry I would be willing to bet it is one of the biggest. I would certainly say he is/was definetely successful in moto.

Castillo is a bad dude, he can still out-ride 99.5% of the earths population and chances are you have seen him Monday nights on NBC. He is Zachary Levi's stunt double for "Chuck" while still having interest at Asterisk.

Like I said, maybe compared to RC, MC and others he wasn't a big name, but not many are and he is definetely a hard working dude that certainly takes care of himself.

My office is right near the Continental Paving which is Chad Charbonneau's grand father's company. Chris O'Neal is probably referring to this family in a couple of posts ahead of mine.

Also, like Motoxistence mentioned, the Grondahls are out there now. I'm just worried that Eric will turn out like Chad in that it seems like the parents pushed the kids a little bit more than needed.

The Butler's certainly weren't starving, but I am not sure I would categorize them as "rich"

Better off than some?
Better off than most?

Sure

But I don't think they could all retire tomorrow and never work another day "rich"

They lived a comfortable existence

Yes you are right. The pressure these parent's are putting on the kids makes racing not fun at all. I've seen it first hand with both of these riders. The father's give them the best of everything possible and if they don't win by 30 seconds they will get yelled at!! I couldn't believe it and you can see it in their eye's that they don't want to race.

Wealthy/educated parents usually steer their kids away from the sport because the risk to reward ratio of modern mx/sx is bad.

Neutra. I don't know the whole story on Kallos. All I knew was the little rumors here and there that his GRamps was loaded. I was to young to know to much of the back stories and I only met him on a few occasions. They were always a really cool family the few times I talked to them though. Shaun never came off as a spoiled rich kid to me. His set up at the time was by far the nicest set up at most the races though.

After reading all the post on this thread, I think someone needs to re-define "Successful".

BTW: Grayson Goodman's family done well for themselves back in the day.

Lol, haven't been around much no.

Kinda winds up when people diss on the kids though, not to say I don't think they have faults, like blaming not having factory suspension for not winning anything, but overall they are ok I reckon.

I've seen a few kids around gncc's I've watched in the states and other events, not to mention nz obviously and I'm impressed mostly, they have guts and determination and opportunities I'd have died for at their ages, let em enjoy their youth, they'll grow up fast enough.

Raced against Goodman back in the late 80's. He got fast quick. Always around the "right" people, had the best equipment, gear, etc.....

Heard about a year ago he was messed up on drugs and ruined his life. Hope not.

I post because GG was the one I thought of when I first read this post. Again hope GG is doing well these days.

Not all "rich kids" are spoiled rotten with no drive...
-Chances are if the parents did well for themselves in business, their kids will also have that killer instinct and drive to apply to things like mx..

It's usually the grandkids of the richies who get messed up and lazy. Some of these kids end up in mx because they think it's cool and nasty and just flame out when they can't hang with the top B riders now days.

They came from humble beginnings as well, trust me both parents were working in the beginning, they just came up with a product and idea that worked, and the marketing tool to make it happen, motocross. Oh and for the record Dave is the stunt double for one of my favorite shows...Chuck, so I'd say he's made it !!
