Welcome limits on ORVs
U.S. Forest Service officials have finally limited the more than 2,000 miles of access for dirt bikes, all-terrain vehicles and four-wheel-drive vehicles in the Mount Hood National Forest (Register-Guard, Aug. 28). A minuscule 0.5 percent of visitors race around the area in off-road vehicles. The vast majority are hikers.
Hikers and others visit forests, rivers, mountains, coasts, lakes and deserts to escape urban pollution and the roar of urban noise. Nature’s deep silences, subtle sounds, healing qualities and inspiring beauties beckon them.
Yet for decades — as a stealth subsidy to recreational-industry lobbyists and their customers — officials have allowed dune buggies, jet skis, snowmobiles, dirt bikes, huge-tired four-wheel-drive vehicles, ATVs, etc., to exacerbate erosion, pollute air and water, destroy wildlife habitat, and drown out nature’s tranquil sounds on public lands.
Misleadingly advertised as cool, safe family fun, such speeding around — frequently alcohol-fueled — is essentially a form of legalized vandalism by irresponsible speed freaks with juvenile attitudes and a high sense of entitlement. Death and injury statistics are appalling. Just talk with emergency room personnel in Florence about dunes-related injuries, many fatal.
Complaining about the reduction in access, Brian Hawthorne, public lands policy director of an Idaho-based off-road riders organization, says, “We love these trails as much as any hiker.”
“Love” them? Don’t destroy them. With exceptions for handicapped, turn off your motors. Slow down. Get off your butts. Walk with your kids and sweeties. Breathe some fresh air. Look around. Listen to the subtle music of the forest. Listen to the silence.

sadly this is correct in many peoples eyes as there are many a douchebag dirt biker motocross that do exactly that.
This is true.
Too many people go out and like fucking idiots on their bikes. So naturally this is the dominant perception held by the public of what we are like.
We may not like the message and content, but the results speak for themselves: the land is now off-limits to bikes and ATVs. If the local off-road community would proactively work with groups like the Sierra Club we would have a better chance in staving off the closures. But bikes get louder, and bikers become more resistant to change. Instead of angrily responding to the "douche bag", perhaps we should thank him for sounding yet another alarm in the closure of public lands. Because our current strategy isn't working.
And frankly, environmentalists get a bad rap too, because of environmental extremists like the myopic douchebag Jerome Garger who is the subject of this thread.
Jerome Garger is to environmentalism what loud dirt bikes and straight-pipe Harleys are to motorcycling.

We have to go to the government and complain louder than they complain, and be more proactive than they are with politics. Show them we are a large number of vocal people.
You can't win using their tactics; they outnumber us 10 to 1, are organized, and have a strategy. And the louder you shout, the stronger they become. We live in a results-oriented society, and the results speak for themselves: they are winning, we are losing.
I'm no "tree hugger", but I am a realist. And a realist assesses the situation and takes action based upon the facts. You say a few bikers are not the problem, while I say they are a big part of the problem. And while some environmentalist will not be satisfied until every biker,.hunter, and republican is eradicated, those in power (i.e. elected officials) are open to compromise. We won't win every challenge, but we can improve our odds by developing solutions, versus the in-your-face approach many riders take today.
This attitude is why they are going to be destroyed at the polls this November in what is hopefully only the beginning of their "eradication".
It is that extremist leftist/enviromentalist mindset that is destroying the country and is what itself needs to be destroyed.
Dune riding is different and not done in a forrest with rivers and trees and trails that you can ride on so he shouldn't be combining the two. He's not going hiking in the dunes.
But I guarantee you they see more injuries from rock climbing than from dirt-bikers and off-road vehicles.
It's all about balance. We CAN co exist if everyone plays nice. There are just as many moto-douches ruining it for us as there are ego freaks doing the same.

I also see where TerryK is coming from as well. I live some what out in the country myself , and can't stand when people go tearing up places they shouldn't with dirt bikes , ATV's , big 4 wheel drives and so forth.
We have to try and keep things separate , which I ALWAYS do! I'm a 100% track rider myself and haven't hit the trails in 15 years.......but when I did , I was respectful of the property and land owners where I rode.
Shame.......it only takes a couple idiots to ruin an entire riding area.
The problem iwth the off road lobby in general is that we are not as organized, well spoken, well-led, or passionate about our causes as these enviromental extremists.
You guys don't get it, they are coming after all forms of recreation, so dont give me this we are out numbered 10 to 1 bs. This has nothing to do with a couple of idiots who are not using the "earth wisely". This has to do with people who think they know how the land should be used, or not used and all other uses should be eradicated. Stand up and stop making excuses, they only use your excuses to screw you out of your favorite past time. Biking, motorcycling, boating, offroading, pwc, snowmobiles, atv's etc etc etc.
As far as this guy is concerned we are all moto douches and we all need to go no matter what. Wake up.

Jeffro503, you need to calm down with the generalizations and do something constructive with your anger as far as keeping riding areas open, you may get off the track at some point and start using trails again. I would start with using that same anger and direct it at the retards who ride off designated trails and as well have loud piped bikes on trail rides, like you fucking need that.
One bad apple wrecks it for everyone and on our side of the fence we got stacks of those. Sad but true, see it all the time.

Quieter Bikes and following common-sense trail rules or etiquette will go a long way towards helping our side of this battle.
