Official KTM press conference at Lierop:

Roger DeCoster to KTM.

KTM wants the same succes in the states as they have in Europe and believe Roger DeCoster is the man to help them with that.
When does that top level exp start? Not in a class won by 15 year olds.

KTM is breathing life into this sport. They have the most cutting edge two strokes. If you are a two stroke guy that is your ticket. Stop bitching and buy one.
If you are are a vet rider the 350F is the dream machine. The KTM450F is bike of the year even without EFI. How and why would you not drop the jap bikes and go with a mx only company?
After 6 years buying Kawasaki's and 11 years buying Honda's, I will never buy a jap bike again. KTM is a motocross company. Not just a motorcycle company.

Funny. You just rattled off about 8 out of the last dozen years or so. Name another team that's had that much success.

Well lets see, since RD went to Suzuki in 94 or 95 (I cant remember) there was a little success by a kid named McGrath. RC on Kawi, Honda, The domination of team PC in the 125s and lights, Henry, Bubba, Langston, Reed (pre Suz). No doubt has RD had success but he has worked hard for it and had alot of years of tough results.
Well, the question was to name another team. One. But thanks for playing.

KTM have been a major force in World motocross for years... GL was World champ in 2000... they have won the vast majority of 125/250f titles in the World Championship since. They won the 125 US nationals in 2003, ALessi was runner up with them in 05 06 and 07 outdoors too...

Not sure about other national championships but in the British and Irish Championships they have been in or around the top for 10 years too esp in mx2.

TRAMPAS PARKER won a World Championship in 89 on a KTM also (MX2).
King did also in 96 (MX3).
You forgot Natan Ramsey won numorus 250F Supercross races in 2005 & 2006.

How about the year Grant Langston and Ryan Hughes went 1st and 2nd in 2003 125 series, Langston won the Championship that year giving KTM their only National Championship to date. Yes, KTM was close through the Lites Supercross series winning many races, but as you posted, the closest KTM ever came to winning a Supercross title was when Josh Hansen tied Langston for the Championship and Langston took it with 1 more main event win.

2003 thru 2006 was the strongest KTM has ever been in the USA. All of this winning was done in the 125/250F classes.
2011 could be the return of KTM to it's winning ways. They're going to have some really good riders next year and their 250F is really good, so were going to have to wait and see if KTM can regain that Championship momentum. Roger DeCoster is a great Team Manager, so it was a good move on KTM part to put him in charge.
I'm personally not sold on the 350 in the 450 class. Non-pro riders love the 350 because the 450 is a lot of motorcycle for the normal racer, but a top level professional needs as much power as possible because they can use it. Just like this years Outdoor races, there will be good tracks for the 350 and there will be bad tracks for the 350. But having it's good and bad points, not to sure if the 350 will be able to help a rider put himself into a good position to win a Championship.
But like I said, we will have to wait and see. Good Luck KTM and RD.

Then you must not believe that Cairoli's running a 350cc bike then? If you believe Cairolis bike is a 350 then you should at this point be "sold on the 350 in the 450 class". Or you don't think Gp's is the top level.

I'm (especially after watching Cairolis 350(?) at Lierop this morning) not convinced that his bike is a 350. That thing was just tracking and was walking away from all the 450's in the whooped out beach sand of Lierop . There's very few deeper , rougher , and more power robbing tracks in the world than Lierop and the 350 smoked the field. The 350 was even 1st and 2nd in moto 2.

Your on to something there Dan. No, I don't believe Cairoli's KTM is standard displacement. Just yesterday I was watching a video of practice at Lierop and the bike he was riding had a much different sound than the one Mike Alessi rides.
Here's a story for you and take it how you want to, but when Mike Alessi was in Europe Mike and Anthony were riding together and Anthony's bike was much faster and pulled stronger. When Alessi asked to ride Cairioli bike, Anthony (or should I say his team) wouldn't let Mike ride his bike.
It's legal to change the displacement in Europe, but it's not legal to change the displacement here in the USA. So it's not like KTM is doing anything wrong if they did make their 350 into a .....?, but it would hurt them through their marketing if anyone knew these.
I'm sure you know the sound of Mike Alessi's bike by now and let me just say this, Anthony Carioli bike sounds nothing like it. It's has a much deeper and throatier sound than Mike's. Maybe this is the reason these two riders have had much different results through out the year.

Actually, per the AMA rule book, page 20, section 3.3 an engine may be bored up to the class displacement limit as long as the parts used are approved by the AMA. Just can't change the stroke.

So KTM USA could bore Alessi's bike if they really wanted to. Assuming the AMA rule book that is posted online for 2010 MX isn't a lie.....

Where is KTM getting all the money from to buy top riders, team managers and do new tooling for new bikes when just a short year ago they were cutting back due to the recession ?

The rule is that you must keep the same bore and stroke as homologated motorcycle. Even if your racing in the 450 class, the homologated bike were speaking of is a 350cc engine displacement. So no, in the USA your not allowed to increase the bored size or change the stoke of the KTM 350.
There is no lie's in the AMA Rule book, you just need to realize KTM homologated a 350cc machine to race in the 450 class.

on here a while back I saw some post or article about KTM actually making decent profits this last year, looks like they are taking that and reinvesting it into the company via new teams, managers, and bikes

Well that would make sense. But you would think they would increase their output in race contingencies. You know giving back to the guy who put the money there in the first place. They made a profit without all the top guys riding their bikes and manage=ing their teams why change a good formula ?
9/6/2010 2:23am
Whilst it's not inconceivable that ANTONIO Cairoli is riding something a little over 350cc, the sound difference could in part be due to the lowed dB limit used in the GP's. As for the 350 kicking ass at Lierop...even if the displacement was increased it was still up against a sea of 450s! Cairoli looked fantastic yesterday, so much flow.

Cairoli is just a better rider than mike... Alessi could have rode a 450 in Lierop and AC still would have beaten him by a minute. I don't even think Stewart would have run with AC there.

Homologation, Def:

In motorsports, Homologation refers to the approval process a vehicle must go through to race in a given league or series. The regulations and rules that must be met are generally set by the series' sanctioning body. The word is derived from the Latin homologare for "agree".

How difficult is it to get a bike approved? Are we talking 100K, 200K?

If you take a legal, homologated motorcycle (350F) and put in a legal, homologated motor from another legal, homologated motorcycle (450F) is that still illegal?

KTM is already the most expensive bike in the sport. It seems to "need" parts more than the typical JAP bike and the parts are way more expensive. I can't wait until my kid gets of the SX65 and moves to a YZ85.

Do you make engine diagnosis by phone as well???

How the h-ll can you tell the size of Cairolis engine by watching a video? Just listening to someones voice on video/phone/irl makes a huge difference.

I've seen and heard his bike irl and it sounds very different from the 450's. I could however not tell that differnce by watching a video.

The soundlevels are different in GP's and AMA nationals, so they should sound different.

I don't know if the use the same videocameras either, but obviously you're the expert in that area...

Red Bull. I heard they take a step back from promoting on-off mx events and smaller teams. They still support the sport - through KTM. All speculation on this, though.

If you believe Cairolis bike is a 350 then you should at this point...

KTM is already the most expensive bike in the sport. It seems to "need" parts more than the typical JAP bike and the parts are way more expensive. I can't wait until my kid gets of the SX65 and moves to a YZ85.
I don't agree with the needs parts line. I've had several KTMs and they are built with better materials than the Jap bikes. They are much easier to work on, they last longer, and look good longer. With this economy some KTM parts are cheaper than Jap parts. I think ALL of the bikes now are way too expensive but with the economy and constant tech advancements I guess it's inevitable.

Fucking kid needs to split from Tony ASAP to save his own ass.

Tony has ruined Mike IMO.

Nope Mike will do great, Tony raised a champion, now lets discuss your father because he messed you up.

Yes moto329 they could get away w/making it a 400 or 450 in the US but I'm pretty sure KTM USA would have to disclose that to the other teams and to the public if they did so. In the GP's (I could be wrong) I don't think they have to tell anyone anything. As long as it's under the max displacement rule they're all good.

Roger DeCoster to KTM.

KTM wants the same succes in the states as they have in Europe and believe Roger DeCoster is the man to help them with that.

He's 16 now. Stewart and Villipoto were 16 when they started their domination in the small bore class. Your point is?
