Any insight into the header design on Sexton’s bike for Denver?  Not the size/shape I’d expect for altitude.

It's the new design to comply with the sound rules coming next year.  Chase and AP liked them during testing so they are running them now on the race bikes.

I watched 4 or 5 bikes go through denver sound test, then AP7s. The bikes before his took multiple goes while his was over in seconds, the difference was noticable.

The whole sound thing is pretty silly to me. On one hand, it’s not a stadium issue because Monster Jam isn’t regulated. On the racing to consumer side, nothing will ever be quiet enough to satisfy neighbors and environmentalist. So what’s the purpose lowering it?

I noticed it also and wondered if it was new. Honestly I thought it looked pretty damn cool. Those pipes always looked good this is no exception in my eyes.

Rather than neighbors within 5 miles of the track complaining, with 3db lower sound  it might only be the neighbors within 2 miles of the track.

The formula to calculate sound attenuation over distance for a point source is:

Lp(R2) = Lp(R1) - 20·Log10(R2/R1)

Where:
Lp(R1) = Known sound pressure level at the first location (typically measured data or equipment vendor data)
Lp(R2) = Unknown sound pressure level at the second location Location
R1 = Distance from the noise source to location of known sound pressure level
R2 = Distance from noise source to the second location

I'll get roasted for this, but I wouldn't mind my own bike being a little quieter. I've damaged my hearing enough over the last 31 years that I have a constant ringing in both ears. I'm honestly just trying to conserve what hearing I have left. I've played around with air pods and ear plugs and just can't get the balance of awareness, noise reduction, and comfortability. Plugs block too much sound for me, to where I feel like a liability on the track. Airpods work great in transparency mode until they start sliding out of your ear from sweat. I may try those ear plugs that have a hole in the center to allow some sound to penetrate.

yesterday this kid shows up on a Yam 250F that thing was so loud it was embarrassing! We don't want attention drawn to where we ride and it starts with these overly loud bikes - so I get it

I was just going to post this. How dare you.

Also it's for new sound compliance rules, guess they have been running it in MXGP and decided it was ready to run here. I saw a few outlets posting on it.

Wait a second. Did they not try to tell us on the broadcast that it was something that helps at high elevation?

I’ve been riding my Triumph since May last year and just recently tried a buddy’s new YZ250F and another buddy’s new KX250…I genuinely got annoyed with how loud both of them are compared to my Triumph now that I’m used to it, especially the Yamaha. I don’t think I could ride that bike without ear plugs it genuinely hurt.

So I’m in the same boat…I don’t mind bikes getting quieter whatsoever

I didn’t understand how people rode with ear plugs in until I rode a YZ250F with a stock exhaust.

Newer Yamahas are loud and raspy as hell. Kawi up there too.

How big a difference? Like the difference between a regular sized twinkie, and a twinkie that is 35 feet long and weighs approximately 600 pounds?

Let me have my cake and eat it too 😂

Haha but really, I am deeply intrigued by combustion engines, I just want mine a "scoche" quieter. I have nothing against Ebikes, I just like tinkering with engines.

I’m all for sound limits at the consumer level, especially on trail networks and ORV parks. I’ve always found it a little silly at the pro level, though. If I’m not mistaken, ours is the only motorsport with such a rule.

You're mistaken. I'd say a significant majority of road racing series' and classes have sound limits. And some tracks are super strict limits that require massive silencers, in some cases even two silencers to get a 1000cc superbike under the limit.

Yes in the uk the circuit/road racing does.
Particularly Brands Hatch are super strict.

I’ve done a bit of cycle racing, and we’re told not to shout profanities because of the public hearing us!
We can whisper it amongst us racers though!

Last weekend at the MXGP you could barely hear the bikes of Coenen, Herlings and Pancar. Compared to the other riders. It's quite refreshing to be honest.

Perhaps you are right. But an attitude like that does nothing to forward the security of our sports future. We have to make attempts at appeasing our critics as best we can, it is their world not ours.
