That's harder to do than you think. Guys like RC, McGrath or Villopoto are getting free bikes because it's part of their pay plan. They are actively employed or contracted by the company they are with. I have a feeling the Triumphs, Kawasakis and Yamahas are going to dry up if those agreements end, however. From a goodwill standpoint, I bet some guys still have good friends in the loaner pool departments of the OEMs they rode for and are able to capitalize on it, but I'd be willing to bet the Japanese guys back home don't know about it. Or at least turn a blind eye to it. Also, things change as those people retire or move to other OEMs / other industries.
Unless the rider has an active, ongoing agreement, it's not easy to borrow a $10,000 machine for a year and return it all beaten up. (Much less 2-3 years.) I don't see guys like Johnny O, Guy Cooper, Ezra Lusk or Larry Ward getting free bikes without a whole lot of sweet talk and maybe even some kind of obligations to the company.

Guy Air Time Cooper The Coolest Mx racer ever. For the young guys that don’t know he traveled to the Nationals in a olds cutless car pulling a bike trailer , not a enclosed trailer . With his wife in 87 on a cr125 Rocket ship.  His choice of bike today is a 05 CR125 .  I had 3 bikes stolen in 13 we’ll 1 bike was missing the forks& swingarm. A 06 with 5 hrs another 06 like new & my stroker crank 04.  4 1/2 yrs later I got 2 arrested . Happened at a Real bad time account was cleaned out from a bad 1 yr full recovery

Elbow surgery . I went back to work 6+ months . 2 bikes where setup on a 15k loan from a trucker pal that owned co.s. to set me up in ND. I had a 380k contract job in oil field hhg drilling.  No 1 helped & my family I think there where happy it happened, Real mean screwed up bunch. I ended up doing Chicago railyards in a dead economy a co that was ovr a billion in debt .  Everyone bitches about a million he had . After taxes that’s 375k , not enough to retire on at 55 . And for sure not at 22 .  I worked at numerous co.s trying to some dough to afford bikes & race b4 I,m dead.  Took another loan out to get to Tx. Oil fields , made nothing . I went to the Chicago Russian 1099 mob next because they run super illegal.  I got .5 more because he couldn’t find a driver that knew how to drive a stick. Total pike of shit I got bed bug bite scares & pneumonia & bronchitis from exhaust & burning anti freeze . I said I need a dr & I,m going home. They said No your not.  22 guys showed up put there shades on looked at me then opened a trailer & looked at the ceiling then me.  A driver was just found severely beaten , hands tied behind his back and was hung in a trailer in Chicago.  I got my knife & we got into it .  I did a horrible w2 co after that lied about the pay not .65 & 68 mph. .40 taxed & .10 not taxed 62 mph . C19 happened no one wears having orientation except for a couple 1099 chicago co.s .  I worked 9 1/2 months straight no day off . Except for er room in March 2019 . I trained a black x con murder then a brain dead military guy then quit training.  Retaliation was brutal I had to give up a 1/2 decent trk & drive a f ing pile . 99% of loads went to Jersey I was the only guy doing that . I made 40k 6 days off the whole yr. I had to take a loan against my life insurance I had since 95. I couldypsy it back . So now I can’t die. Late 2019 c19 co.s started hiring. I said f w2 co.s if I ever want to ride it has to be a 1099 Chicago mob co.  I,m on my 11th there all Soo dangerous. And rip you off 400-500k is owed . My plan of the iL. Labor dept doing there job and getting my money failed . I,ve dealt with  failed system since I was 4 yrs old getting extreme beatings & the state doing nothing.  Most 3 inches shorter in aprox 2/ 2 1/2 yrs on 1099 trks, hundreds on injections , need neck, back, hip, shoulder surgeries.  Dead economy for 3+ yrs = no income.  Easily ovr a million on denied work claims .  More physical than jackhammering it feels like 200 hrs straight every day . I ran 60 hrs straight in a tanker doing the ne . I was a big time bball star got f ,d & had to quit to pay rent at 16.  I want a state championship now b4 I die or something.  And show I can earn more on a bike than driving a truck.  That’s easy because u don’t get paid for your 149 hr week.

I needed some AI for that one...

Here’s a cleaned-up and more readable version of the story:
Guy Cooper, nicknamed “Air Time,” is regarded as one of the coolest motocross (MX) racers ever. For those unfamiliar with his story, back in 1987, he traveled to the Nationals with his wife in an Oldsmobile Cutlass, pulling a bike trailer—not even an enclosed one. He raced on a CR125, which he referred to as a “rocket ship.” Even today, Cooper’s bike of choice is an ’05 CR125.
The writer shares their own struggles, recounting how they had three bikes stolen in 2013—one missing its forks and swingarm, another was a nearly-new ’06 model with only five hours on it, and the third was an ‘04 with a stroker crank. After 4.5 years, two arrests were made related to the thefts. This happened during a tough period when the writer was recovering from elbow surgery that required a full year for recovery. Their finances were wiped out, and they had to borrow $15,000 from a trucker friend who owned companies to set up work in North Dakota’s oil fields. They secured a $380,000 contract job in oil field drilling but received no support from family, whom they describe as mean-spirited.
When the economy crashed, the writer ended up working in Chicago rail yards for a company that was over $1 billion in debt. They mention how people complain about earning $1 million but explain that after taxes, it’s only $375,000—hardly enough to retire on at age 55, let alone at 22. The writer worked various jobs trying to save money for bikes and racing before they pass away.
They took another loan to work in Texas oil fields but made no money there either. Eventually, they turned to working with Chicago-based 1099 companies they describe as “super illegal.” One harrowing experience involved bed bug bites, pneumonia, bronchitis from exhaust fumes, and burning antifreeze. When they asked for medical attention and said they wanted to go home, they were threatened by 22 men who showed up wearing sunglasses and intimidating them. They recount how another driver was found beaten severely and hung in a trailer in Chicago. The writer armed themselves with a knife and had a confrontation.
Afterward, they worked for another company that lied about pay rates and truck speeds. During COVID-19 (C19), few companies were hiring except for some dangerous 1099 Chicago firms. They worked nine-and-a-half months straight without days off except for an ER visit in March 2019. They trained new drivers but eventually quit training due to retaliation from coworkers and management.
By late 2019, as COVID-19 hiring increased, the writer decided to stick with risky 1099 trucking jobs because it was the only way they could save money to ride motocross again. Over time, they’ve worked for 11 different companies—all dangerous—and claim they’ve been cheated out of $400–500K in wages. Attempts to recover this money through Illinois labor authorities failed.
The writer reflects on their long history of dealing with systemic failures since childhood when extreme beatings went unaddressed by authorities. Their health has deteriorated significantly due to trucking work: neck, back, hip, and shoulder injuries requiring surgery; hundreds of injections; and physical strain comparable to jackhammering nonstop for hours every day.
They dream of achieving something meaningful before they die—like winning a state championship or proving they can earn more from motocross racing than trucking. They lament the reality of working unpaid overtime during grueling 149-hour weeks as a truck driver.

This version retains the original story’s details while improving readability and structure for clarity.

This is glorious MD!

One harrowing experience involved bed bug bites, pneumonia, bronchitis from exhaust fumes, and burning antifreeze.

What are examples of the industry whoring themselves out for JLaw in the past few years? Just curious

The Phoenix Honda deal and constant appearances on WTS are some that come to mind. Always thought it was funny how Ping spared no expense railing Jlaw for his off track actions for years as a journalist, but when he realized he could get clicks off Jlaw being popular again they’re best bros all the sudden.

Ah, yup. I do remember the Phoenix Honda thing now. I do stand corrected.

JLAW to Indian SX would be excellent - and well worth it's own Netflix 10 part documentary.

"Homeless" has become "outdoor urban dweller".

"Unemployed" is "economically inactive".

"Panhandler or beggar" is now "someone using the power of social media".

This world....

There needs to be some homogenezation of the language... because they obviously aren't referring to the same thing I am when I use the term "maintenance hole".  😁

I was always sort of a "screw J-Law" kind of guy, but I felt vindicated back when Dungey was winning everything and Jason went to jail.

Later, I understand that he figured out how to be less of a shit human and I can respect that. I hope he raises enough cash to be able to get a new bike and keep riding, and furthermore, I hope he'll find better employment so he can use racing as a supplement, rather than his sole income. Finally, anyone who feels like donating their own money should be able to do so without disparaging comments from the peanut gallery at Vital.

I don't blame Jlaw at all for doing a "go fund me" to pay for his problems because MX is one of the only sports I know of that people are dumb enough to chip in. 🤣 Fools and their money are soon parted.

Like I posted earlier, I'm far from JLaw fan. But, correct me if I'm wrong, dude has stayed out of trouble the past decade right? Amd the past couple years he's gotten the passion back for racing. He would always no show at races he planned on doing. Now he'll seemingly line up anywhere. He's a character. It's good to have in participating in the sport again

It’s been 20 years and the message boards hate Jason Lawrence just as much as they did at Southwick 2005.

in a world of change it’s a nice to have a little totem

Also, I try not to tell people how to spend their money. Hell, people donate to politicians. Imagine doing that.

But, if that’s how they want to spend it, so be it. Not my deal.

Actually, no.

Part of what makes them so legendary, like the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey, is everyone has their own interpretation of it. Trying to make sense of them only ruins the experience. 🤪

The guy has 104k followers on IG that follow him for free. Good for him that 10% kicks in 1 dollar for him a bike. Me personally would love to see him win a title at the ranch the next couple of years. Dude was drugged out and finished. From a human being view of it good for JLaw.
