Whats going on with Alessandro Lupino goggles?

There looks to be a thin wire off the side of Alessandro Lupino's Oakleys. Does anyone know what this is for? Screenshot 2025-03-11 at 3.30.48%E2%80%AFPM

My first thought was a tether for tear-offs but I don’t know how that would work.

It’s a system to “catch” tear-offs. It clips onto the post on the goggles so when you pull the tear-off it slides to the back of the chord.

They banned tear offs in some countries as they were considered litter. So this may be a way to prevent littering. Only problem I can think of is if I pulled a tear off this system it would rip off the tether as well.

As long as it works.

Seems stupid. In that case, why not just use a roll-off system rather than have 5+ tear offs flapping against the side of your helmet?

So, you pull the tear-off, and then it flaps on the side of your helmet for the rest of the moto?  Probably not annoying at all.

This came to mind, which is why I thought I was probably wrong. I can only imagine that it's like all the times that I accidentally pulled too many tear offs and they just flapped around the side of my head.

I think it was RacerX that did an April Fools joke years ago claiming the AMA was banning tear-offs for this reason. It was pretty funny.

It’s pretty remarkable how many tear-offs litter the ground after a pro moto race. Washougal is something else.

It's the progrip green system. We have to run them in most European national and regional series. They mostly serve as an alibi, as the tearoffs will usually just rip off anyway. I have been running in all last season, and might have had two or three tearoffs hang on during the entire year.

The Green system has been around for years but really took off a couple of years ago after Tear-offs were banned. In my opinion, it's only a matter of time before the ban goes global. It’s honestly ridiculous to be tossing plastic into nature and no different really to open your car window while driving and throwing out plastic bags, nobody does that?.

One track in Sweden even banned Tear-offs on their own after a nearby farmer had to care for sick cows that accidentally ate plastic Tear-offs that ended up in the fields.

Is the Green system perfect? Probably not. The ideal solution would be biodegradable Tear-offs, but despite efforts, maintaining the same level of clarity, durability, and shelf life has proven to be a real challenge.

Our local off road series, probably the most well known series in the north east, has banned all tear offs. Youre right, its going to be global before long.

Riders can pick their preference. There's a lot of riders opting for this is many races over rolloffs, so maybe it's not that big of a deal

I've posted this before but the amount of tear offs on the ground is sketchy in many races, think about Loretta's for example. Probably tens of thousands of tear offs on the ground, not even counting the ones that were in the dirt already.

I think it would be beneficial for our sports image in the mainstream if the tear-off issue were solved somehow. There for sure is the technology to make them bio, at least I would think so. It just looks pretty ghetto to literally race amongst trash let alone the environmental effect, and I can only imagine how it looks to someone who is not familiar with the sport.

I support the ban as it is in most countries in Europe, and I haven't heard from the riders that it's bothering them at all.

I see a lot of off-road guys using this after the NEPG tear off ban.

Armor vision works great.  For longer races I use roll offs just in case but for moto and practice days they can’t be beat!  I agree on tossing tear offs, not exactly great is it just chucking them on the floor.  I know our sport isn’t exactly “green” but can’t be a great idea to just bury thousands of them every year.

My son has used this system and pulled 5 tear offs and came back with none on the wire. They don't like having laminates on them they are to flimsy and tear.
