I liked his character as Lex Luthor when I was a kid. He had such a great catalog of roles he could play.

i was on a western movie kick a couple weeks ago and watched Unforgiven and Quick and The Dead, Gene was a real talented actor.  his part in Quick and The Dead was by far my favorite western antagonist.

In my opinion, Unforgiven is the best Western movie ever made.

Definitely up there. I’m still partial to Tombstone. High Plains Drifer and Pale Rider are up there as well.

Loved Gene Hackman in literally every movie he was in. Just thought about his character of Avery Tolar in The Firm. Also, the Senator in No Way Out with Kevin Costner.

An obscure film....actually a dark comedy.   The Royal Tannenbaums.

My wife and I saw it in the theater when it came out.... the two of us were laughing through the movie.   Noone else in the theater was.

He was awesome in that.    It's a loaded cast too.

So many great films.....hard to believe he hasn't done anything since 2004

I was looking for something to listen to while doing tile work yesterday. Howard Stern does great interviews so I found an archive with Kevin Costner from 2024. In the interview Costner was asked who was the greatest actor you worked with. Without hesitation he said it was Gene Hackman. After looking through this thread and being reminded of how many great movies he was in, I have to agree. Can’t really think of anyone else who I could put above him

Such a great actor, shame he went out the way he did.  Just to light the fuse on the conspiracy theories, I'm going to say he died naturally, and the grief-stricken wife took her own life in some kind of communal passage.

Surprised we haven't had any update on this one, very bizzare circumstances surrounding these events.

Yeah he was fantastic - another great from the golden age of movies, and I'm sure many of our childhood memories, gone... I think the best actors have a certain edge to them, a sense of threat. When you saw Gene as captain of a U.S sub or Clyde's likeable but also dangerous older brother etc, you believed it.

Sad ending. Such an amazing actor. Unforgiven is my favorite western and one of the few movies i have watched countless times. I still say " for what you done to Ned"  if someone asks me why i did something random.

RIP

The last update I heard was that they tested negative for carbon monoxide and there were no signs of physical trauma. Still waiting on toxicology, phone records and contents of day planner found in the house. What is confusing is the dead German Shepard and that there were also 2 more dogs on the property that were reported as in good condition. The bodies being in different areas doesn't sound like suicide pact and if it was, how would they have done it? The wife was in her 60's. Why would they leave 2 dogs to fend for themselves? It sounds more like accidental poisoning of some kind. They maybe ate something that the dog also ate but what kind of food poison is that fatal? I don't know. Just spit balling.

I belive they said the dead dog was locked In a kennel and the other 2 were not.  She may have fallen in a rush to get him some medication when he started going into cardiac arrest.

Low key favorite movie of mine he was in is "Mississippi Burning." Such a powerful performance.

I was trying to think of the name of that movie when we heard about this. Outstanding performance by him.

Tombstone is one of my favorites. One of my favorite movie lines ever…”you going to do something, or just stand there and bleed?”

That whole bit of calmly calling the bully card dealer a pussy, while lighting a cigar, completely captured the essence that the real tough guys aren’t the ones yelling and throwing their weight around.

Apologies for thread drift but had to chime in.

The latest report I read was that the dead dog was found in a closet near the wife's body. They did not say if it was locked in there or not or what kind of physical condition it was found in.

Early reports are reliably fucked up by the press though.

Dogs can't go 9 days without water. Maybe dehydration.
