I wish I could find the humor in it friend. I find it tragic so many of my fellow voters, like our friend "byuguckuff", are victims of our piss poor public education system. They have no basic grasp of economics, our government systems, or even math for that matter. They live life being spoon fed "information" from the View and Today show. Being tragically misinformed they are pawns to the political system that teaches these poor souls to need the federal government to make life "fair" and "safe", all the while ceding more and more liberties for these unattainable, nonexistent goals. We are entering a phase in our nation where some citizens truly believe the federal government does have all the answers, is altruistic, and is somehow run by people far more noble and wise than the rest of us.

I understand you believe that. You have my sympathies, but I resent the influence people like yourself have on shaping the world my grandkids have to deal with. People like yourself have a different reality than people like me, I understand that, the problem lies in people like yourself dwell on how others(the government) may help you overcome life's obstacles while people like myself accept life's challenges as their own. As long as you place your eventual ending point in anothers hands ( the government for example) you will lose, as your gains are not ever your own. Your satisfaction of completion will never arrive. Every day will be unfair, unsafe, because the end result is not yours, everything is a questionable happenstance to luck or help from someone. But if you accept your challenges (racism, poverty, sexism, disability, ignorance) as your own, no matter the outcome, you win because you confronted those dragons on your own, win or lose. Lord knows I have lost most of life's challenges, with the scars to prove, but I sleep well knowing they were my battles and mine alone.

I respectfully disagree with the assessment that liberalism is the product of ignorance. There are well educated, intelligent people on both ends of the political spectrum and idiots on both ends as well. The idea of justice as fairness- that the government ought to redistribute wealth to benefit the poor - was the view of the most influential political philosopher of the 20th century, John Rawls. I assure you, Rawls was no dummy. I tend to agree more with his Harvard colleague, Robert Nozick, who made the case for a more libertarian view of the role of government. I highly recommend Nozick’s book Anarchy, State and Utopia if you’re interested in a top notch critique of liberalism.
I will say, though, that the leftist bias in academia is quite significant. When I was a philosophy professor I would teach Rawls then Nozick as well as another libertarian Jan Narveson (who I had the pleasure of interacting with at conferences on several occasions). I had several students tell me that my class was the only one where they heard any serious presentation of a more conservative approach - by serious I mean I put it in its strongest possible light rather than straw-manning it just to knock it over. These students would say things like “this has to be wrong but I can’t say why”. I’d simply leave them to make up their own minds. I actually knew quite a few libertarian leaning philosophers. Philosophy is a pretty intellectually rigorous discipline where you’ll find less of the pseudo intellectual bs that is rampant in most humanities disciplines. Things have gotten stupider over the years to the point where I’m glad to be away from it and working for an accounting firm.
