1. Fewer douchebags and hillbillies will attend "because it´s cool and popular".
2. More core people.
3. Same or better racing. Money hasn´t done anything for the quality of the racing. If anything, people rode harder for pride than money. Or what about just: they showed up to race in the first place "no special contract for special people".
4.Production costs of bikes will have to be lowered - maybe a way to return to 2 strokes.
2strokes = cheaper bikes/parts for consumers = lower noise = possibly more places to ride, or at least fewer shut-downs.
5. People will follow the sport because they "found it" and liked it, not because someone shoved it down their throat and sold the sports soul to please people who couldn´t accept the original concept of MX.

I wish people would stop trying to change this sport to suit people who don`t necessarily like the sport for what it is. Why do we need these people around our sport? The biggest downfall to motocross is/will be money and exposure

I never said core fans = douchbags/hillbillies. I don´t think the core fan has to scream or look uneducated to be core

IMHO for a sport to be truly great it needs to have compelling action, be physically demanding & mentally taxing and be unique. MX & SX have this covered in spades just as they are. Altering or messing with the formats just so we can be "mainstream" and be "easier to understand" for the masses is a big mistake. Instead you let people migrate to it, learn about it, and understand/appreciate it for what it is. Our sport may never get much bigger than it is and that's not necessarily a bad thing. It is a very tough thing for a lot of people to relate to obviously and for those of us that have raced, spectated, and generally been swept away with a passion for it is just the opposite. My rambling point here is that I don't care if it ever gets bigger but if it does I hope it is simply because people appreciate for what it is as it is.

I'm not sure I agree with your reasons, but mx does not need to grow or go mainstream. If it does, that will kill it for sure. One reason mx is cool is because it's not mainstream.

1. There are plenty of Self-Appointed "CORE"-Ass-Holes that are HUGE Douche-bags: They make those "Hill Billy" types look good.

2. Hill-Billies, Red-Necks, Flat-Billers, 909ers...what's next? You're headed down a perilous road, here.

3. Money killing the Competition...SX only contracts...etc. As the Nationals are getting revamped and gaining prestige...this, too, will change: For the Better.

4. 4T v. 2T...Good luck with that.

5. "Found It"...sounds like Religion. "Sold the Sport's Soul"...that IS Religion. "Shoved it down their throat"...that IS Bitter Bitching.

So, here's the thing, All you guys that think that you're "Cool" or "Core" because YOU wear The "Core" gear and ride the "Core" bike and are in the "Core" of the Sport should all quit goin' to your Circle-Jerk-Light-Beer-Bitchfests and lighten up...

The best thing I've EVER SEEN about MY SPORT is when I see a family out at Hollister on their CRF-Xs and wearin' their Fox Gear & HAVING A GREAT TIME.

They are MORE CORE THAN YOU!
They are just happy to be riding! (That's CORE)
They love what they've got and are riding the piss out of it! (That's CORE)
They are falling down on the side of Competition Hill and wondering how they're gonna "get back down!"? (That's CORE!)
THEY are out on the TT track. (Again, do ya see the pattern, here? CORE!)
THEY are out on the MX track. (Uh,oh...CORE!)
THEY are out there RIDING! (Oh, no...not again?! C-O-R-E)

So, take your name calling and "Core" ideas and GFY.

Mean-while,

I'll sit here and defend MY Sport's ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT COMMUNITY of PEOPLE, "Core" or Not, and the Progress they are making...even in this crappy economy.

Have a "Core Day"!

This whole "mx can't go mainstream and needs to stay core" argument is possibly one of the stupidest statements I have ever heard. Don't be spiteful of the fact that the sport is growing around you and drowning out that feeling you get when your uninformed social circle thinks you're cool because you ride a dirtbike. The fact of the matter is that motocross is merging more and more with the action sports movement, and growing as a result. Moreover, it has always been driven from the bottom-up (how many racers do you know who enjoy other action sports like BMX, snowboarding, etc?)

And thinking that the sport is getting too expensive as a result of mx going mainstream is ridiculous. There is no correlation there. In fact, if anything, costs of production would go down with increased volume (as a result of the sport becoming more popular). Whether the manufacturer passes on the savings is unknown. Another thought is that, while barriers for entry are high, an increased market makes it more likely for other competitors to come in for their piece of the pie (increased competition = lower price).

Yes, dirtbikes are expensive and always will be, when has racing ever not been expensive? I'm not saying that it isn't becoming more expensive, because 4-strokes are obviously more expensive than 2-strokes, but when was there ever a time where a HH income of 50k could race? Never. The "too expensive" argument is all relative until you define what 'expensive' means.

Lastly, those Hillbillies and D-Bags you talk about are the ones paying to attend the event and helping the sport stay alive and prosper.

The only way I see Sunhouse not being a complete idiot in this thread, is if you are fishing. If you are, then touche my friend.

I really miss two day nationals. Because nobody would be there on Saturday! For promoters and sponsors bigger crowds and more people is better but not for me!

We need to distance our selves from the "Motocross" that is associated with freestyle and do to show the true ballet of the sport.

TV Coverage is nice and all but there needs to be less roving pit chicks talking about pork chops and more footage that shows the real sport.

I know that there are constant comparisons to NASCAR, but there are somethings we can learn from to make our sport more spectator friendly.

In car camaras made a huge difference in showing what the driver experiences.

Cameras have become small enough that the top ten in the points should all have one every time they go out on the track.

Can you imagine the shots that could have been used from the first 450 moto at Redbud?

How about Dungey's come from behind rides this year? What about the one with no goggles?

Imagine helmet cam shots of hitting Laroccos's leap, the wall at Millville, a rutted jump face, a whoopped straight, and all the other raw footage from helmet cams.

It may be hard to put in place for live tv but it would make tape delay shows something to look forward to just for the unique coverage.

Even if it is just the low budget cameras that we all see riders using all the time, the top 10 should be recording footage to use for the edited shows.

What, what, what?

Spiteful? Who said anything about being spiteful?

I was just stating that when sports, or anything, for that matter, goes mainstream, it morphs into this blob that is very much unlike it was from the start. That may be good or bad depending upon your opinion, but I see it more as a negative. (not spiteful in any way!) For example, look at what has happened to surfing? There used to be alot less people in the water, alot closer knit surfing community, kinda like mx is now. But, everyone and their brother got on the bandwagon and started a surfwear company and the crap has even ended up in frickin Macy's! You can buy stupid Quiksilver in Oklahoma for heaven's sake! Now, there are loads of goons in the water, way more fights, tons more accidents, etc.....Do we want mx to go this way too? (Don't even get me started on the pro ciruit!)

Well said. I would add, rougher natural (see non man made SX) tracks and 45 minute motos. I would say 2 strokes as well, but unfortunately that ship has sailed.

I get your points BUT growing isn't that bad...with the sport growing, we "core" guys are more likely to get same day or live coverage of the races etc....and look at soccer, one of the biggest if not THE biggest sport globally, and i enjoyed every minute of the world cup watching it in crowded bars with friends etc, the other "none core" football fans that were there didn't bother me, i dont think its that big of a deal if the sport we all love grows, i'm all for it..

If you are, then touche my friend.
x2 on 4mxonly's post.

Manny on Team Green said it best in his post above when he said, "The best thing I've EVER SEEN about MY SPORT is when I see a family out at Hollister (or anywhere says Ty) on their CRF-Xs and wearin' their Fox Gear & HAVING A GREAT TIME". THAT IS WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT FOR ME...that right there stirs the immense passion and love that I have for our sport and want to be involved and contributing to the continued improvement while our sport grows.

Somebody said in their post above, that people are just shoving and forcing our sport down peoples throat that do not even want to nor enjoy our motorcycles, just for the sake of GROWTH... In no way what-so-ever am I, or anybody I know, supporting or participating in such a theory. I do not know of anybody, any group or any company that has ever had any such thought let alone actions of that sort.

Seems the word GROWTH freaks some people out and in my opinion the word GROWTH is being misunderstood. The sport IS GROWING, that is GROWTH. That is awesome to me because I love motorcycling and I love sharing my passion with those that feel as I do...whether its because they have rode for years or they just tried it yesterday and are already hooked for life.

I played sports non-stop from the age of 5 til 13, and so did all four of my daughters ( 5 thru upto18yrs old) organized leagues, afterschool, whenever, as much as possible. My parents made a mistake and moved our family to the booneys to be with the other wanna-b- cowboys and their horses... I hated it and didn't participate in the sports I loved anymore because the first 30 days of 9th grade at the new school in the booneys there were huge fights, small RIOTS every day between the cowboys, the farmers, the mexicans, and the blacks... shit i was just a sheltered city kid man. So I rode my stripped down SL 100 every second I could on the track I made on our property and started racing 2 months later and have loved it every second since. We moved back to OC the next school year out there. As luck would have it, our house wound up being across the street from a friend my age that went on to reaching as high as AMA MX #8 in his prime and his step dad was argueably the greatest mechanic in motocross ever, he wrenched for a few National Champions several years, as well. Two years later I had the most awesome life experience, let alone for a 16 year old punk kid. I raced in the high school championships held at the LA Coliseum Super Bowl of Motocross... I will NEVER forget it. It is a goal of mine to do what I can to help other kids experience something similar to that feeling, that experience and lifetime memory.

As far as GROWTH OR GROWING, Motocross has grown since the 70's, so it's obviously happening and will not stop anytime soon. It can slow down, as it apparently is these days. The latest enthusiasts to our sport will either enjoy it as much as we do, or not, they will wind up spending their recreational time enjoying our sport, and if not, they stick with baseball or whatever it was they enjoy doing. I have 4 daughters that have a mother that is scared to death of motorcycles so my time over the last 20 years has been spent as a softball and soccer dad with the occasional bike riding with the girls. When my youngest, the last of the 4 to still be palying High School softball, suddenly traded in softball for boys, partially due to my divorce, I was hit with the hard fact that suddenly the family get togethers at the sports events left everybody going their seperate directions more and more. That usually doesn't happen with motorcycle riding families, many go on generation after generation. So awesome when a grandfather, his son, and his grandson, all podium and their wives and girlfriends are wrenchin, washin the bikes, grabbin the beverages....lol... and sister is racing too! I like to share and promote that fact about our sport as much as possible. I have replaced the time spent at the fields with my real love...moto. What I see is those families Manny and I talk about are trying motorcycle riding, together as a family, as well as independently, and that is cool!

Sunhouse... are Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawi, KTM, and Pro Circuit, FMF, etc., etc. in business and surviving strictly because of you and the "fewer the better group" spend more than enough money to suppoer and keep them in business? If so, cool.

Heres to Motocross becoming America's Sport during our lifetime!

Does motorcycle speedway still fill the stadiums with 50 to 100,000 very excited and enthusiastic fans like in the 80's when Penhall was World Champion?

"Motocross isn't a sport for the average American spectator. The average American spectator wants a comfortable seat and a cold beer and a hot hot dog and just wants to move his eyes to watch the game. He doesn't want to walk up and down hill and trudge through mud to see it."

Dick Mann, 1969. So don't worry about motocross becoming a big sport.

In '69 that may have been the case, but spectator value has made a big shift, and it's called action sports. No longer do people want to sit in seats and watch a guy hit a ball with a stick, if anything, they want to be stimulated -be part of the experience. Action soprts is where the growth is, and motocross is becoming part of that movement more and more every year.

The number one reason MX should not go mainstream is that if it does, the govt will shut it down for kids because of all of the injuries.

As far as growth, I read somewhere that Hodaka sold more bikes in a year in the 70s than the entire industry sells in a year now.
