Why do we have strict environmental regulations regarding manufacturing in the U.S., but could care less how much pollution is created elsewhere to manufacture goods for the American consumer???

I want to scream this from the top of every liberals home.

They don't give a flying fuck about regulations, environment, slavery ect ect. They just dont want it in their back yard. They just want to virtue signal so they can feel apart of a cause. A purpose at home to make themselves look good to their peers. Nothing more

Trump is a Tarff guy. Same as his first term. His hero President Mckinley, whom besides having mountain named after him, was also a Tariff guy. It made America rich, powerful. America than went to war against Spain. Spanish - American war in 1898. America won in six months. The end result was Spain conceded Porto Rico, Guam, Phillipines to America. Freed up Cuba, which than became America wealthy playground. Much investment went into Cuba from wealthy individuals. They created golf courses, hotels, beaches, parties Havana style. Than Fidel Castro came along and shut it down. Confiscated all the wealthy properties, and made them tourist hotels. Will Trump take Canada, Greenland, Mexico, Panama. Who knows, but he trying to break them financially first. Than move in. Protect North America as one. Why? China. China is the real deal a true competitor. The clash is coming, unknown date, but it’s coming.

So, the plan is... to weaken the people who we share borders with... so we can then "invade them"... and somehow this will make us stronger... instead of just, you know, making our relationship stronger without invading them?

If you take oil and natural gas out of the equation, we bring in about $58 billion more from the USA than the US from Canada. Canada is dependant in the US for more or less everything, even stuff coming from Asia mostly comes into US ports and supply chain forst (think Wal-Mart, etc). And the oil bought from us is usually at a pretty heavy discount, upgraded on the Gulf Coast, and sold on from there at a pretty nice profit.

Maybe you should offer to fellate Trump until he changes his mind, and name your price to the Trump team. After all, you've stated previously that you'd be down for something like that for the right price.

He has said more than once the past short while (I saw him say it late last week) that there is nothing Canada could do to avoid the tariffs. Total clown show.

I know for sure there is at least one sector that has some Senators giving him grief for this. He has now admitted there will be some pain for Americans. Maybe he will come to his senses yet, but I'm not holding my breath.

The federal government existed on tariffs for the first 140 years. Every president used tariffs. Not just McKinley. That was the only source of revenue, besides excise taxes, that was available.

In Canada, we don’t currently have a functioning government. It’s fucking insane. We need an election now to get the clown show out of office. I don’t know if the conservatives will be better but they can’t be worse.

This is going to be ugly for everyone - at least in the short term. I’m hoping that the long term outcome will be positive for Canada. With our massive oil reserves, we still export our oil and import from Saudi Arabia. The sooner we stop doing business with those theocratic lunatics the better.

I work in accounting and I do a lot of work with farm clients. I’m very worried about how they will be affected.

I hope Trump has some grand strategy and hasn’t just lost his mind. I’m not hopeful though.

Question for you.

What did you do as your fulltime job before you became AKW''s little fanboy, chasing his every post, every day?

You're just a creepy little stalker now.

Tariffs on goods from the US's 3 largest trading partners will increase the US Governments income by $272 billion, paid for by US consumers, the cost of living just went up by $800 per person!

Or……

We’ll import things from a different country that was originally more expensive and raise costs for consumers while experiencing retaliatory tariffs that hurt several of our own industries.

How the tariffed (is that a word?) country decides to deal with the tariffs is their choice. They can pay all of it or part of it or none of it. If they pay none, the entire tariff passes along to the consumer. A concept that Trump has, so far, not been able to comprehend. In either case, the government issuing the tariff gets it money. The benefit of global trade is to exploit the abilities of foreign producers in order to lower costs for your own citizenry. The industry protection angle is a dead end. It forces your own citizens to pay higher prices because the domestic producers cannot compete. Also, balance of trade is bullshit.

So yes, I agree with your assessment in general.

The “tarriffed” country can pay all or part or none of it? They’ll pay none of it, and choice has nothing to do with it. If the U.S. puts a tariff on a Canadian product, it is the U.S. importer who pays the tariffs. So if you manufacture a product in the U.S. using Canadian steel, you - the American manufacturer - pay the tariff when you purchase the Canadian steel. You then can either charge more for the product to recoup the cost of the tariff or just make less when you sell your product. It’s an increase to cost of goods sold. It’s intended to be an incentive for American manufacturers to buy American steel by making foreign steel more expensive. There’s no choosing to pay the tariffs or not on the part of Canada - that doesn’t enter into it at any point. Trump knows very well how this works. He bet that most of the American electorate didn’t, and from what I can tell, he was right.

The way that Canada is choosing to deal with the tariffs is by imposing tariffs on American imports - in Canada, paid for by Canadian importers who will then pass some, all, or none of that cost to their customers. Or they simply stop buying American products. For example, some Canadian liquor stores have stated that they will no longer sell American products. I wouldn’t buy it at this point if I could. So no more American bourbon for me. Happily, there are plenty of excellent Canadian, Irish, and Scotch whiskeys.

I feel a little silly putting this in such simple terms but I’ve seen way too much nonsense indicating that this issue is poorly understood at the most basic level.

As a Canadian I'm hoping it's all about forcing us to spend the 2% of gdp on military .We're at 1.4% .Your King feels as we're freeloading. He is right. We need to up our spending. To at least that.

Spending money for the sake of spending money doesn't accomplish anything. We could hit 2% by paying $1000 per pen, but that's not doing anything useful.  Just because the us is pass poor at managing their military doesn't mean they should drag the rest of us down.

Tariffs on goods from the US's 3 largest trading partners will increase the US Governments income by $272 billion, paid for by US consumers, the cost of living just went up by $800 per person!

The only way the conservatives could do worse than Turdeau would be to resurrect Joseph Stalin and Mao Zhe Dong, have Stalin impregnate Mao's neck growth, abort that at 8 months and transfer it to vat full of Molson, maple syrup and growth hormones, remove it after a few months, teach it Quebecoise, and have it replace Turdeau.

We’ll find out. I’m hoping the next government can write competent tax legislation and at least pretend to care about spending. I don’t think Poilievre is anything like Trump. I can’t say I’m crazy about him but the Liberals need a time out. I’d be happy to see a Conservative minority - keep them in check somewhat. I subscribe to the adage that governments and diapers both should be changed frequently, and for the same reason.

Like I said, have you not seen what's happening down south and who's in charge?  Literally the guy you just described and merry little band of wanna be bullies. He's the us version of pollievere

I’m impressed! Nicely done.
