Eli had been taking the outside in the sand section every lap, until Jet caught him and they were about to lap Moranz. Jet had been taking the inside and it appeared to be the only section of the track that Jett was catching Eli.

As they approached the sand section, Moranz went to the outside and pointed to the inside for Eli. Eli took the inside for the first time during the Main and then never took the outside again. Would Eli have taken the outside on the next lap and Jett the inside? We will never know.

One thing we do know, it was a Main Event for the ages! We were there to watch it live and blown away how amazing they were both riding. WOW!

I think Eli saw Jett get really close the lap before taking the inside and he was going to cover it next lap around. But yea we’ll never know.

The first pass Eli made railing that outside sand was perfection that maybe made Eli think it was faster…but it wasn’t replicated speed after that.  That was a beautiful pass when he made it.  All I said when that happened was “damn”…. as in total awe.  Sometimes perfection can’t be replicated.  Inside was faster.

Vince tool Friesy tried his best to ruin yesterdays race by collecting both Tomac and Jlaw.

IMO it made Eli take that line and see how fast it was, I mentioned that in the race thread too.

Your hypothesis has merit.

Holy shit! I was thinking the same thing. Vitards are on the same wave length.

Valid point, but that was where Eli passed Jett early on.

Vince Freise should watch that and learn.

I was assuming Eli either saw Jett making up ground there or got a pit board message indicating to go inside.

Seeing in from the stands, I think you’re totally right. I think the sharp hook developing on the outside would have caught up with him and caused at least a half a second bobble.

I think Moranz forcing him to take the inside was definitely a gift. I can see a different version of the race where Tomac overrides the outside, allowing Jett to catch him — and who knows how that would have ended

In any case, I was cheering so hard for Eli to get the win. My voice is a bit hoarse today, lol

i hadn't clicked into this thread, but had seen the title. We rewatched the race tonight and I kinda yelled to my wife, "Now I know what that thread on Vital is about".  On first watch we hadn't caught that it was Moranz.

Anyway, it did seem like Eli was looking to run the outside again and pivoted based on the situation that unfolded. So mark me down as a definitely maybe.

It wasn't the first time Tomac took the inside. He did very early in the main and Jett actually passed him by taking the outside.

Check out the other thread where the guy posted his video from the stands. There was an epic back and forth between those two at the beginning of the main.

True. And thankfully he’s no longer relevant.

Eli was making so much time in the switchback section crossing the start straight. Railin and wide open. Jett was running a tighter line there and losing momentum.

I don't remember much after that. I got in a fight in the stands and lost my shirt.

No he didn't play a role. Tomac said that line was blown out and that's why he switched to inside.

Moranz may have played a small role, but I think Freise held up Tomac in the rhythm before the whoops and then REALLY held up Jett in the whoops. Eli pulled a bit of a gap after that; just enough to ride the lines he wanted without having to defend in every corner. I think that made all the difference.
