I was recently thinking about the 1993 season, Jeremy McGrath's premier class rookie season championship, and how it's similar to Jett Lawrence's. Both were coming off two 'Lites' titles while riding for Honda, both won their premier titles with Honda, both had revolutionary riding styles, and there was a changing of the guard within the competition. I decided to write an article about it and reach out to some of the riders from the '93 season to get their thoughts on MC in '93 and if they see Jett similarly. I realize Ryan Dungey also won his rookies season, and I make mention of it, but he wasn't part of my thought process with this story idea originally. Give it a read and let us know your thoughts. Maybe you think Dungey is the greatest. We want to hear from you. Hope you enjoy and Merry Christmas.

Bradshaw!
McGrath.
I’d have to give it to Lawrence from a 30,000 ft view. He went undefeated in his rookie 450 Mx season then won SX championship his rookie 450 season. Hard to compete with that.
Jeremy hands down

For overall season, that’s probably true. I was more focused on SX. Thanks for responding
Fair enough. Very few got to watch McGrath’s entire rookie season. It was all second hand stories and these can often take on a larger the life perspective.
One thing that I don’t think is arguable is how Jeremy changed how SX is ridden. Jett is riding with an evolved version of MC’s BMX style in SX. MC was way ahead of his time here.
Jett’s style while super refined is not revolutionary he’s just one of if not the most efficient rider we’ve seen when it comes to SX/MX.
MC
IMO, MC changed how SX was ridden on a bike that was nowhere near as refined and tracks that where set up differently on a weekly basis. The consistency MC had has yet to be duplicated. Personally, I think Jett would have made too many mistakes on those bikes and tracks..
I’m a Jett fan. But his riding style isn’t revolutionary. He’s just really really good.
It's a tie.
MC is the only right answer.
JMB
There’s only one King. Period.

Was waiting on this. Haha
I think you have to give it to the King, he completely changed how people ride MX, no coach could have taught him that. Many of those races he won in 93 were dominating victories from the hole shot to the finish.
From a SX standpoint, I want to say MC. But that might be tainted by a bit of nostalgia.
Both seasons were simply incredible.
Pit Row
Also McGrath raced some premier class SX events before 93 so 93 was his first full season but technically not an SX rookie .
Well Jett raced smx, mx, Paris sx on a 450 so technically he had more premiere class experience.
Marty Tripes….. hell, he won the 1st Superbowl at 16 😮
Against plummers and electricians.
I kid sort of.
Gary Jones , Jimmy Weinert , Rex Staten , Brad Lackey , Jim Pomeroy to name a few of those plumbers and electricians .
Yeah the term rookie is used pretty loosely but it's really no big deal . My vote is for McGrath .
On paper, Dungey. 16 wins, two championships and an MXdN victory. Not bad.
Yep, and he also ushered in a new audience for SX with his dominance and likable personality.
This!
This ^
Without question. Then won the next year's Superbowl of MX/SX
take all the riders MC was racing against in 93 and add up all their wins/championships combined until that point. Then do the same with all Jett’s competitors in his first season. It would paint a pretty clear picture. I haven’t done it but I bet the difference would be huge.
