Dirt bikes are low hanging fruit, you know there's way more kids and adults hurt playing soccer, basketball, hockey, and football every year, but somehow there's public and private fields/courts everywhere.

Do you think liability insurance for MX tracks is going to get cheaper and more obtainable outside of Southern California?

Unfortunately DT1 MX Park is in the same boat.  We are being sued by an ex pro (wife's name is on the lawsuit) who's kid got hurt and news like this is worrying when it comes time to renew our insurance.  Our insurance already almost tripled last year when this lawsuit started so the effects are already felt.  It's a shame that a few people can cost several people their livelihoods and ruin it for an entire riding community in this area.  We've already lost 2 tracks in this area in the last 2 years, if this track goes there will be nothing left in this area.

As someone that is a part of a private rental the Friday-Sunday after Thanksgiving (as we have done every year for a decade).....This appears to be the true.

Heartbroken is an understatement.

How can municipalities build skateparks and avoid getting sued 24/7?  They don't even have a waiver! We need to get MX Tracks on that program.

Insurance companies $$$$ are going to price and regulate themselves outta business.

They all invest in US treasuries and are incurring huge losses as rates spike.  In short, they are insolvent and need more cash, thus you are seeing premiums sky rocket.

They have massive blanket liability policies that are insanely expensive, and that, frankly, the skate park is small potatoes as part of. And, of course, municipalities do get sued 24/7.

Insurance premiums have gone through the ROOF. I know all mine have on everything. Auto, motorcycle, health, dental, home..

Come on economy, I need a break. By that I mean lower prices and more salary.

Interesting, sounds like something the AMA should be doing.

LOL. Your dues would need to look like your property taxes.

AMA does offer event insurance, but, of course, that is for their sanctioned events, and it isn't exactly dirt cheap.

My auto insurance has doubled in the last 4 years. Thankfully my health insurance is paid for by my employer. I know friends are getting rapped on health insurance and they have large caps on out of pocket costs.

You'll also notice they all have signs now that say no bicycles, insurance costs more if bicycles are aloud. I mean, who wants to be a wood pusher? 😀

Wrong. Look at the NW, etc. And no matter what the current scene is like in SoCal it’s still bigger than most anywhere in the US.
And I’m talking Moto, not trail riding.

Not too many fatalities going down at skateparks and people don’t sue for broken wrists.

It’s all about catastrophic exposure .  Workman’s Comp in heavy industries would make your jaw drop.

DT1 became my new favorite track after I rode it for the first time last year, hope to be up there again soon.

What ex-pro?  Time to name names!

Yea, same thing for us as it relates to even finding someone.  We went from State Farm to some rando provider I have never heard of.  Took 7 weeks to find someone. Was a nightmare. Probably happen again this Feb when its up for renewal.

We are only seeing the start of the insurance challenges that our beloved sport could have in the not so distant future....

The insurance crisis that started in CA (fires) and FL (storms) due to claims and state governance is spilling into other states like NY and TX, etc. It is only a matter of time until it spills into MX, which is a real liability risk, and the cost to insure for our local tracks becomes prohibitively expensive.

I hope it doesnt happen and that I am wrong, but I am worried in 3-5 years local promoters / track owners could see rates skyrocket to absurd rates, or coverage just goes away altogether.

Our homeowners insurance here in California was through State Farm - had a policy with them since 1998, no claims ever. Premium was ~$7500. In January of 2023, State Farm dropped us - we were in an area they deemed a fire zone - and the only policy I could get was $23,500.  There was one option through the State last resort fund for $15k, but the coverage was garbage.

Yup, our insurance more then tripled overnight just last winter. It is happening.

What part of California are you in ?
Everyone I know has had a big increase in their home owners insurance, but your $7500 a year plan was pretty damn high before the price increase. Mine went up 25%, but I’m still under $2K a year. I have a few friends who were also cancelled and were faced with $10K+ for their homes. Lots are going without, since their homes are paid for. But that’s so damn risky, especially if you are truly in a bad fire zone area.
I can’t imagine having my home owners insurance cost me more than what I’m currently paying for my house payment, which included taxes and insurance.

Bay Area, Santa Cruz mountains. We are in a risky area - our "neighbor" on every side of the property (except for one corner) is Sierra Azul preserve, which is 850,000 acres of hilly preserve land with no roads and no access (yes 850,000 acres).  Our land is 150+ acres of hilly fire risk, and the replacement value for the houses are ~4mm, so yea, its not cheap and the risk is also pretty obvious.  We did a ton of fire prevention and tree removal, but the insurance companies could care less about preparation, they just look at zone or zip code on a map and label risk accordingly.

But to go from $7500 to 23,500 in one shot was a tough pill to swallow.  As a smaller detail, my auto insurance on two cars (which are both ~20 years old) initially dropped during COVID, which was nice, but has also now more then doubled from its low levels during Covid and is 55% higher on annual cost then what it was in 2019.

Don't mean to hijack this thread with my personal stuff, but I think the Insurance issue is just starting to show its ugly head with respect to MX Tracks. The risk is what happened to LACR, they just cant get it, period.  Not even at a crazy cost. No one will write it.

Hopefully I am wrong or someone will come up with a solution.

Have there been any attempts to form a motorsports park specific insurance company?

Not enough people ride Moto anymore. Tracks would be open if they made money

On top of that the average age of anybody at the track is like 40. To me it just seems bad for the future of Moto

Might be true in your area, but it's the opposite of what I'm seeing.

Unless the track was on inherited land or

In a flood plane - I don’t see they could possibly pencil out.
